In conversation at Loop 2016, Jay-Z’s producer No I.D. talks about why he likes to keep his beats “unfinished” and waxes philosophical about what it takes to stay current in hip hop.

"the timeline is the enemy, clips are freedom" yes exactly, that's why I switched to Ableton last year. my other daws had similar things but it only eventually led me to the real deal.

cosmosis in ableton you have a clip view and timeline view. With clips, you can trigger endless possibilities without ever having to stick to one variation. Eg you have two samples, a piano loop and a drums loop. You can trigger the piano loop then trigger the drums but not the samples. But then you can do it again and trigger the samples and drums but not the piano. The more you have, the more possibilities you can end up with. In timeline view, it means there has to be a start and end to your track. What he's saying is that with clips he can produce many different songs using the same set of sounds, allowing for maximum creativity...

+SDS Overfiend You trippin' bro...it is well known that No ID started mentoring Kanye West when Ye was in his late teens! By then Kanye was producing beats here and there but it wasn't on a professional level like No ID. No ID taught him how to produce on a professional level and Kanye himself outdid No ID in output & catalog. No ID taught Ye very well because Ye became on his own one of the best at producing in Hip-Hop definitely top 10 producers. No ID was not Ye's ghost-producer, he IS still one of Ye's producers at Ye's label G.O.O.D Music. Just read the story of how Kanye West produced the "Otis" beat on Watch The Throne right before he had to catch a flight.

Damion Betts having worked in FL studio, Logic, Sony Acid & Ableton I can all the processes are not the same. The ease and speed in which an idea can be recorded or communicated affects the overall creative process. No other DAW outside of Ableton had its own dedicated midi controller with parameters displayed, which can limit the user to a certain sound that is produced, which is why I think most music nowadays is based around Quantized Grid based music. A vast amount of producers are limited by the resources available to them. A mouse and generic midi keyboard controller.

I saw him on maschine too..as far as everyone else talking about cults and daws and it doesn't matter, I own every program and run them well..I just like knowing what routed the journey along the way to try a new daw. If they are all the same no need in switching. Yes I know every program can get the job done but going from one daw to the next has a certain value that may help others that may spark creativity or workflow..
@ILaxative
@ILaxative 7 жыл бұрын
mindalteringfx I understand that they don't discriminate..that's why I love ableton..never spoke on limiting my ability to learn I have mastered every daw out there besides bitwig cause I don't own it but each daw offers a certain taste that the other doesn't..doesn't make it better just different.

Alot of interesting comments on Dion schooling Kanye, the question you should be asking is who schooled Dion??? Like he said in this Vid, He started as a DJ... In a crew called U.A.C.!!! Twilight Tone, Dion, Common... and this kid no one gives credit too, outside of the Chi... and this Kid name was Race!!! who did the majority of the BEATS in them days and MC'd!!! Now add that ish up, 1+1=2, Lolbvs... Just putting ish in a Lil bit of perspective, on the real, about things!!! No hate towards Dion... but the real question should be, who schooled Dion... and then got kicked to the curb, when Relativity came calling??? Loyalty... whats that huh... No I.D.???
