This is absolutely insane. I love it. Such a rich generation of sounds without needing a wall of test equipment or crazy modular. Just record a few hours and pick out the good stuff like music concrete.

The voice transformer definitely gave the most pleasingly quirky results in this video exploration (to my ears). So many cool and enlightening ways to experiment with the tools at our disposal. Thank you for continually encouraging the spirit of curiosity. 🙏🏾

If you watch this with closed captions on during the noise portions, you get the odd "uh" and "um", which made me laugh, and then during the voice transformer demo you get [APPLAUSE] and "wow" and tbh I agree.

Formant filter gets like what I do with no input mixing - make very quiet hissing sounds. I like playing melodic content through that and having the melodic content push through the noise. Thank you for this cool video.

Interesting picks! My fav pedal to use for no-input has always been my old DM-2. A slapback echo is to my ears the perfect complement to this utter chaos, gives it context and musicality. Random piezos are also great to "play" the mixer. Just plug them anywhere and tap tip top.

It would be super interesting to see you tackle no input mixing on mixers avail in euro format. As you were using the 0-cntrl I really wondered what feedback control paths would be possible with a deep mixer like the WMD perf mixer....hmmmmm!!!! Cool stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for covering this - incidentally, when I first heard of "no input mixing" and wanted to try it out myself, I assumed that putting something else other than cables (read: fx) was the standard way to go because just using cables would be boring...boy, was I wrong.

The best way to protect your amp and/or hearing is run a brickwall limiter between the mixer and the amp set at an appropriate level and job done!

The core of my mid-aughts rig was a behringer 4 bus mixer, metal zone, danelectro flanger run into a boss dd5 delay. Doesn’t take much to open a huge sound world with just a few parts.

Thinking out loud here without researching - but if the protostar rectified the signal at the cv inputs, you might be able to get wildass audio rate modulation from one of the really hot signals running from your feedback patch.

Given that most of the euro rack gigs I've been to aren't music in the traditional sense then you could call this the poor persons modular. I've been cobbling together, old used and repurposed gear for years. You can get to some great places sonically.

It's fun trying to work out which Mackie mixer he's using, I maybe wrong,it's a long time since I watched his vids. I thought it was a VLZ but I think it's a really old micro model. He does use an old DOD digital delay amongst other pedals. He also feeds the result through some rack mount gear.

i tried feedback loops back in the 90’s on an analog console in the studio i was working at that time. i had never heart about this before, so i got this idea just by myself. i managed to tune in a chord, but left it at that and never got in any deeper. i had this in the back of my head as something to explore more sometimes, but never did. then i stumbled across your video...! at first it felt, like someone was stealing my idea, but of course that’s nonsense, because i could have worked on this myself, what i didn’t. anyway! i was quite fascinated of the sounds you created, so i tried to get similar results, but using only software instead. that turned out to be more difficult, than i had expected! most software seems to have some kind of built in feedback protection. first i tried vcv rack, but didn’t get any feedbacks at all. then i tried reaper. first without success, but then i found the feature that suppressed feedback and turned it of. i then got feedback for a short moment, but then automute jumped in, as the levels got too hot. maybe i get better results, if i insert some limiters and keep playing with it, but the first results were not too great. finally i tried the console mixer of voltage modular and finally got some feedback going. i had two channels with the master out looping back to their inputs, one channel with a vco, just to have some initial sound to get the loop started and finally a psp delay, feed by aux1 and returning to 2 more inpit channels. as to be expcted the loop through the delay turned out to be the way more interesting one, but adding in the vco also created some interesting effects, as i could detune it agains the delay loop and add to it the same time. i played with this setup for half an hour and although mostly generating horrible noise, there were some very pleasing moments to when some interesting new sounds rose out from all that chaos. so thanx for bringing me back to a technique, i developed many years ago, but never never understood the possibilities, hidden within it.

I remember my first takes at no input mixing long time ago. The cat was getting crazy, especially when there was no sound playing. I guess there were ultrasound always there. I also remember the first day I had a looper and wondered what would happened if I did a feedback loop from the L output to the R input. It happened that the pedal died, and that I got back to the store saying I had got a bad unit…

You covered a really important point. Their are no rules. As I mentioned in another comment on this video, it's a great way to get started in noise and experimental audio, as well as getting to know your way around a mixer. Especially on a budget. I started out with an 11 channel dj mixer picked up for next to nothing in a charity (thrift) store, and a couple of cheap clone pedals. I used a dicta phone and radio to create YIM, as I called it, or yes input mixing. It turns out that varispeed and half speed dicta phones are respected devices these days. Basically beg steal and borrow whatever you can, learning to solder up leads is helpful but not essential ( lead adaptors open up your budget sonic world ).

I did this in the early 90s using the aux sends on a crappy 4-track and a couple of cheap rackmount FX. Flangers with feedback was my favourite, made quite a digital sound with huge unpredictable pitch swoops. At the time everyone thought I was insane, and now it's hip. Bah! I still have the tapes somewhere, maybe I'll sample them one day and make some horrible industrial noise core. Not really my thing these days, but if anyone wants several hours of multitracked screeching pure noise, you're welcome 😉

Thank you for another no input episode. My favourites were the ring thing and the VT-1. I still haven't tried 0-Input (can't find it on the makenoise site!), but will do soon, and try my Roland Aira VT-3. Your sound quality is usually excellent, but the balance seems off somehow this time - I rewatched and believe it is due to only two ducks on the right monitor - please adjust accordingly ;)

Hi Sarah! I've been following your videos on no input mixer, it's been great! I haven't tried it myself, but I'm wondering if there's any way to emulate or create a no input mixer type of setup with VCV Rack? Lately I've been exploring feedback with the Chronoblob mixing it's own signal, but I would love to know your opinion. Thanks!

i super duper recommend pairing whatever no-input setup you have with a blooper or MOOD from chase bliss is one of the most wonderful experiences. i break the signal off so they get their own inputs and outputs so i can capture little moments as the improvisation goes. i've also really enjoyed magpie pedals' "bubbles", dwarfcraft's "grazer", ehx's "blurst", and gamerchanger's light pedal. i don't think i've ever felt more like i was collaborating with an instrument than when doing no-input + pedals, it's wonderful!!

I broke my orange crush 20 with my no input mixer setup. I wasn’t even playing loud but I left my low eq turned to max on the amplifier maybe that’s why. It has now a constant noise that sounds like bassy hum with square tremolo modulation. You could hear that noise even though there’s no input to the guitar amp. Do you think you can break a digital delay pedal for example the raster 2 red panda if you connect the main outs of the mixer to the input of the pedal? The volume of the amplifier was not even turned to 5. What’s the alternate setup you would recommend instead of using a guitar amplifier with the no input mixer? I’m sorry I’m asking many things at once hehe.

Much Noise. Such Fun. So Cool. The EHX Ring Thing was definitely my fav but all the pedals had something unique to offer. Lots of rich and complex harmonics, and blips and bloops with the self-oscillation.
