Unfortunately this is true. I used to work at a shelter and we have had boxes of newborn kittens (umbilical cords still attached) dropped off anonymously. A few of my coworkers volunteered to foster, some of them have had some veterinary training, but still they didn’t always survive. You are right- I am a foster for older cats (I help out with kittens during kitten season) at my local shelter. Quite a few are brought to the shelter after a guardian dies, or as a cat ages or becomes ill, the family just won't or can't deal with them. We as a society need to adjust our thinking, that domestic animals are our right and privilege to care for, not objects to be discarded when they aren't 'working' properly. Advocates like Hannah help to ignite our responsibility to make changes to the way we think, and over time, the situation will improve as long as people will listen. I didn't even know fostering was a thing until I ran across one of her videos, and contacted my shelter to enlist. Every person can make a difference if they choose.

Unfortunately for older felines, habits are hard to break, and if they're afraid of people, those habits take time. For feral cats, the only thing we can really hope for are those who trap, spay/neuter, release. It works, it helps with cat populations, but you need dedicated people to do it because a regular shelter just can't.

Promote spaying and neutering. That's by far the main thing that keeps animals from having to be euthanised. Cats breed exponentially (look it up :)). It is mathematically impossible for us to increase the number of homes for cats anywhere near as fast as cats can increase the number of cats.

My cat was a feral as a kitten (He and his sister were the second litter born in my neighbor's barns) Momma and three babies were caught and sent to the crappy local shelter before I could get involved, (they were about 6-7 weeks) so I volunteered to catch the other two as they were going out of town the next day. Long story short we tamed them (took a lot of patience and snuggles) and kept both and their older brother and now my cat is my favorite cat we've ever had. Don't count out the little guys! Well, they are not really little anymore all three are in the double digits...

My formerly feral cat was already about 3 months old and teaching her that indoor life with humans to love her is amazing took quite a while but it was 100% worth it. She really didn't like us at the beginning and would hide the whole time so I just sat down in the same room as her on the floor talking, reading and singing to her for a while each day just so she could get used to my smell, voice and presence. One day she just came out and wanted cuddles and the rest is history. She is 8 years old now and even our 15 year old boy only took about an hour before he accepted her after she opened up to us. They were separated for about 2 months but of course they could smell each other and our Teddy while already 7 at the time and living alone for about 4-5 years still knew how living with another cat felt and just accepted his fate and his new sister. They are a mismatched pair but a very calm one and it works surprisingly well for 8 years now almost.

Hi Soling.... the hardest part is giving them away. I remember this lady i knew from out Clubbing who said she had kittens to give away, and so I got her number and and got directions and went out and saw the kitten, the last one she had. I scooped him up. he was solid ginger, and she lead me to beleive he had some white patches, which is really cool, but he didn't. But I looked into his eyes. He had walked up to me and didn't mind being picked up. Everything indicated he had been Hand Socialized really well. but when I said "Okay, I'll take him" it was like I hit that lady with a hammer. I said "Oh! No Take Backs!... you can kiss him, but I'm not going to let go". she walked me out to my car with tears in her eyes. Oh, she had said he was 8 weeks old, but he looked bigger than that.... well, she was telling the truth. that thing, Roary, is now my Biggest Cat. But a real sweetheart. I think that is what I saw in his eyes.

If they did take them to a shelter that doesn't necessarily mean they would be put down. If that shelter has a foster program they could have gone to a foster parent until old enough. Glad you shared this info. I went to a shelter in 2003 because I heard on the news that they were killing too many cats. I saw an older scraggly cat that had obviously been outside. I started reading the tag and it has "euth" on it. I asked about her. The guy said she'll be out tomorrow. I got mad and said..out how? This tag has euth on it. He tried steering me to the babies but I told him I wanted the older one to keep her alive. I finally got her and within a few weeks, she was a ball of fur. I named her Sugar Baby. She never even got close to trying to bite anyone. She looked like a basketball walking down my Hall, just a beautiful fuzzy ball. So glad I got her but thinking about the babies now. I'm still just sick about having to put my 11 year old kitty to sleep 😢 but I had been taking him every 6 weeks for a steroid shot for his immune disease in his mouth. Then he ran blood tests. His kidneys were failing, his liver was off the chart and he had diabetes. I had to have him put to sleep the day before my birthday 💔😢😢 I'm looking for another one or 2 now.

on the topic of euthanizing feral cats; (please read the whole thing before commenting) Feral cats can be really, really, really damaging to an ecosystem. TNR is a good system that helps over time (given that people stop abandoning their F*cking cats outside, and neuter their pets) but some vulnerable species don't have that time. However, killing animals because we caused them to be a problem is never fun, and mass euthanizations can be really disheartening Euthanization of Feral cats is definitely something people have to decide their own views on, and there's no 'right' answer. However, many Feral cats can be reintroduced to people (they are domestic animals, after all), or put to work/live on farms if they can't handle being around people all the time.
@martadiaz44385 жыл бұрын
Very true I learned this in uni, from so many people abandoning cats they've become an invasive species
@katphish305 жыл бұрын
Cats are not nearly as damaging as we've been led to believe. Many of the "studies" "proving" they are dangerous to wildlife are heavily slanted and based on terrible science. And irrespective of their alleged environmental impact, they're impossible to eliminate. Not difficult. Actually, practically, logistically impossible.
@PurpleDog065 жыл бұрын
The other potential downside to euthanizing ferals is (and I'm curious about your thoughts on this) is that an altered, vaccinated feral colony can keep unaltered, unvaccinated cats in the area to a minimum. They outcompete other cats coming in to the area, where with euthanasia eventually more intact cats will move to the unoccupied area left behind. Until more people are actually responsible with altering their pets and ensuring feral cat access to TNR, the cat population will just keep growing.

Kitten lady, Thank you so much for supplying this info! I’m doing a school project on activism and I chose TNR in cats as my subject and this video was SO helpful and mind blowing. This movement is important to me because even my own feline fur beby was a former TNR cat. You are a constant inspiration to me as a cat lover and as a (hopefully) future veterinarian! ❤️😺

My dad has been saving kitties like you, Kitten Lady! Ever since he was little, people have been dropping dogs and cats out in the country, so my dad and the family took them in. Some dogs he took in, but most of them were cats! And the names were adorable! And my dad still does this, getting cats that were in the wild(at kitten age) and taking them in. I even have my own loveable mother cat now! And before, sometimes they come to us! We helped out a poor,starving kitten and named it "Smokey" (cause he was the color of smoke). But not long ago , my cat, Silver(we mainly call her Skille,etc.) Had kittens,and one of them was a breed I never had! We named him "Noir". His sisters we named them "Fifi" and "Marie". I love my three little French musketeers! And I learned alot from you and my dad about cats!! Talk to you in the next video about the wonderful little Angels! Bye!! Edit: wow!! That's alot of words!!

Thank you for informing us on this matter! You always do such a great job and I can only hope that with this information and your channel, more people will join in to help animals that need our help. And No! If you find a baby kitten or litter, please inform yourselves and try to give them a good home yourselves, or at least find someone who can! Don't just drop them off at shelters 😒
@catschamomile2985 жыл бұрын
Finding them a home yourself might be difficult financially. Because of the spay/neuter, vaccines etc. It's best to go to a shelter and offer to foster the kittens under their name. That way you make sure they're safe plus you don't have any costs.

Thank you for all the information. I learned more about Kittens this year when I decided to foster five. Before I didn't know that without a foster they will be euthanized, because as you mentioned most of the shelters including the one in my city don't offer a 24-hour nursery, and they don't have the funds to hire more staff. I hope animal lovers get more involved in helping their local shelter.

I volunteer for a cat rescue and have summers off. A woman came in to get help after finding eight 2.5 week old kittens in a bag in a park. All the fosters are full, so I volunteered to be trained to raise them. It is a lot of work around the clock but when you look at them playing as well as sleeping, it is well worth the time and effort. Love them all!

Years ago two of my female cats escaped and came back pregnant. They had ten lovely kittens between them. I helped with the births. I called my local animal shelter and the lady on the phone told me that the kittens had to be at least 2 pounds. She emphasized the weight more than the age, which was 2 months. I was sad the day I took them in (along with the two mothers and one other adult cat) but the shelter staff loved them and were excited at how beautiful and healthy they looked. I left feeling that I'd done the right thing. Hours later I received a call from the shelter that the entire crew had been euthanized. They said that two of the kittens tested positive for FIV. I was devastated. I mentioned this to a friend of mine who was a vet tech in another city. She told me that it was likely that the test results were a false positive, and that the shelter decided that all the cats I turned in would be destroyed. She said the lady on the phone was probably a volunteer who was just parroting what she'd been told. This made me feel worse, because I could have kept those kittens until they were 3 months old. As I recall several of the kittens were barely 2 months old. Laura said that kittens can have false positives on test results and then a month or two later test normal, just like human babies. I thought I was doing the right thing by turning them into the shelter. Sometimes you can do the right thing and still have bad results. .

It would be nice if shelters made more openings for jobs/volunteers to do overnight care for animals that need it. Sadly I dont have the resources to foster and animals are not allowed in my apartment (I was lucky enough to be able to get my cat I've had for 11 years to move in with me) but I think it would be a nice alternative for shelters to have overnight opening for those who want to help in other ways. That way the little guys can be taken care of instead of put down due to the fact that they cant give care.

I think the world at large really needs to focus on controlling the population. To reduce kitten numbers. Laws where pet owners must sterilize their pets, more TRN. I foster kittens too, but I find sometimes finding them a good home is hard as less and less people who are the right candidates exist. I think preventing the kittens from being conceived would save so much hurt and suffering.

Your videos really inspire me to do more for the cats and kittens in my community. I am going to be a veterinarian eventually but want to do all I can to help animals while im on my way to getting my degree. I want you to know you have inspired me. As soon as I have the ability to do so I really want to get involved with a shelter and offer to foster kittens they bring in. I think its really great what youre doing.

This explains a few things from a few years ago. I adopted a cat I named "Tigerlily" and the shelter said she would be put down because she was feral and nobody wanted her. Tigerlily lived her final years with me and she slowly grew out of being feral, and I honestly learned so much and was so thankful to havw the opportunity to own a feral cat like tigerlily.

Omg!!! Thank you for this video! I found abandoned day old babies... And my mom said ok ASPCA... My heart sunk... 3 of the babies died due to really bad health conditions. But 2 survived! We raised them and found them a loving home where they are thriving... It is so important to educate the public. I’ve been trying to work with the ACC for quite some time now but they make it very hard to even become apart of their TNR world, and I am TNR certified. I just wish they were more open to us, especially since the TNR site they wAnt is to go to is really far and you need a car to get to. In which, I don’t drive. I try to educate as many as I can, I try to neuter and trap as many as I can, I try to place as many as I can but it is hardwork... And when you have organizations that are a bit resistant it can be discouraging...

There would be more fostering families if communities didn't threaten eviction, fines, or complete disregard towards fostering families. This is my fear every day, I have 6 cats in an apartment that says I can only have two animals, four I foster because no one will take them. Too many cats, too many people are allergic to them, people only want kittens... etc. I want to save as many of these innocents as I can but there is complete overfill of cats in the area I live. Three of the fosters are on a waiting list because they are too old (two are about 4 months old, one is 1 year old, and the other is 9 years old.) I am overwhelmed and I don't know what to do, and now with information, I am completely lost.

Women's prisons would be great to educate on neonatal kitten care. Programs could be set up like prison dog and horse training set ups to save kittens.
@Nirrrina5 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. I know there's one prison where the inmates have adopted the local cats unofficially. A vet comes by once a month to treat the cats at low cost for the inmates. As well as well supplies for the cats. It's allowed because as a result the inmates were better behaved because they didn't want to risk being separated from their cat. But an official program would be better. Especially if it was paired with the training to become a veterinary assistant of some kind. Then help finding a job working with animals. Maybe even allowing them to adopt a kitten/cat as they are released to a residential facility that will help them adjust back into society. All with their cats support as well as the other things that are needed.
@ldalexandrite5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good idea but i’m extremely curious; why only women’s prison?
@darkmoonlady20025 жыл бұрын
@@ldalexandrite a lot of men's prisons have higher security clearances needed. I'd imagine you'd have to carry higher liability insurance for a program in a men's prison vs womens prison programs also. If a men's prison was low security I'm sure they could run a neonate kitten program too. Higher security always means more difficulty with contraband searches, so imagine kitten formula being searched or syringes tested for every entry. Just off the top of my head.

this makes my cat's origins make much more sense. She was 3 weeks old when her litter was brought in to the shelter without their mom and a family friend was volunteering when she overheard shelter staff talking about how they were going to put them all down because they were sick. The friend offered to take them all on the spot and got them healthy and adopted (my kitty was 5 or 6 weeks old when I took her home). Lucky for her, the kittens took to wet food right away so all 6 thrived and found homes. We've always wondered how a shelter could be so quick to decide that a litter of kittens who only needed a weeks worth of antibiotics was too much trouble. This video put it into perspective for me.
