50:25 in Minecraft, particles are always updated clientside, but some of them are spawned serverside. And in older versions, particles used to be entities like mobs or players, with special treatment in some parts of code. Also at least in latest versions, particle objects are pretty large for something so seemingly simple, ~180 bytes each

50:15 well, actually the server can send a packet to the player (or a group of players), so they can see the particles the server want you to see. I know because I’m actively developing plugins for Minecraft servers, and mods for Minecraft client! :)

is gRPC actually bloated though? I can't tell if it's just part of the meme, but my understanding of it is that it saves a lot on bandwidth because JSON messages are bloated. referring to 27:00

it's bloated because it requires another compilation steps that he bypasses by manually setting the bit layout himself. For context his client server messages aren't in JSON but are in a binary format.
