Tim, I'm an OLD grandma. I've been sewing for over 60 yrs, I enjoy your videos. I've learned a lot of new ways to sew quick & easy items using the premade quilts. Guess you can teach an OLD dog new tricks. HA HA...you could use one of these circles for a hot pad too.... thanks so much for sharing. Happy Stitchin'

Many, many, many years ago ... I made a small table quilt using that method with scrappy left-over holiday fabrics. To this day, it sits on my coffee table. The backing fabric I chose was more scrappy fabric, but not holiday themed, so I just turn it over when it's not the holiday.

I put sections of stay stitching of equal lengths along the edge of each circle, one thread width into the seam allowance, and use that stay stitching as the guide for leaving a section open for turning. The stay stitching prevents the bias edge from stretching when the sewn circle is turned right side out. Elmer’s Glue can be used on the open sections to keep the edge flat and sharp when the edge is top stitched, eliminating hand stitching. Instead of stopping every few stitches at the outer edges of the circles, measure the radius of the circle. Use that measurement from the needle to the left, and tape a thumbtack with the point up, exactly at the radius measurement. Put two circles together and line up the edge of the circles with the needle, then push the circles down over the thumb tack to the left. Lower the needle and then the presser foot and sew. The thumb tack will cause the machine to sew a perfect, non-wavy, circle, without having to start and stop. Use a walking foot if your machine needs one.

I love the concept of this idea Tim. You could buy clearance items after seasonal sales happens. Also, the inside out thing doesn’t bother me as much as “sew a quarter of an inch on either side”. Many instructors say as teaching techniques for making half square triangles.Because either side means choose one or the other. In actually you are instructing them to sew on both sides of the line. So the saying should be sew a quarter inch on both side of the line. Or perhaps sew on each side of the line. Doesn’t that make more sense?
@timothytotten94092 ай бұрын
Totally makes sense.

@patriciamaeanthony38382 ай бұрын
If using a single layer of the quilt, just cut a square and use the thumb tack method that I described in a previous comment to sew a small zig zag around in a circle, then trim the excess. As for the binding, use steam to form and shrink the bias binding around the edge. Make chalk registration marks, then open the bias and attach it as usual. There will be less risk of ripples in the bias since it has already been shaped around the curve. If desired, tiny dots of Elmers glue can hold the bias in place while stitching it in place.

Great suggestions!!
@elena38312 ай бұрын
Excellent idea. I guess you could leave an opening in the circle then top stitch around that or would it not work?❤❤
@timothytotten94092 ай бұрын
Sure but I always end up with a blunt end rather than a curve. So I like this method better. But to each their own!
@motherhenableАй бұрын

@timothytotten9409Ай бұрын
I don’t think so because the back color comes to the front when you fold those pieces. So it would have to be a back fabric that could work for both holidays.

@timothytotten94092 ай бұрын
A charger is a decorative plate that is larger than a standard dinner plate. They are often used as a base when laying out a table setting. I would suggest using a large serving plate so you get at least 12-13” of size on your circle.
