@@missk1697 It is Rated T for teen in the US, that means 13+. The lowest rating is what the game has to adhere to. The difference between T and M is very often suggestive vs sexual themes. PS2 also is pretty close to being able to receive a PEGI 12 rating; it isn't the depiction of violence or themes that are holding it back from lowering the rating, it actually is the lack of moderation in chat. Rating systems are a wild subject to look into.

Yeah, no. That sexual undertone makes no sense to me. Makes as much sense as calling the Viking bundle adds no-no Germans undertones into the game because Germany were Vikingaboos. That take of yours about new players getting put off by cat girl post doesn't hold water. Maybe the new player portion browsing reddit portion once in a blue moon, however the furries (Luckily) banished themselves to their own Planetside 2 sub-reddit to post that stuff there. They'll instead just see the normal salty vet shitpost and a few cool videos people post there. What's worse to see? A VS infil wearing a cat helmet on a spitfire or the weekly salty vet post stating everything they hate from the game such as A2G, HESH, vehicles, infils, bad devs, lag, dying server pop, hackers, invisible Sunderers underground that ruin fights, et cetera. I know G1ngerB0y, played with him for a good bit. That "creator's burner account" is rubbish. Most likely some salty vet who liked the cat helmet doing that on his own. If you just hop in to the 0w0 discord server or my discord server and ask him yourself if that will sate your curiosity. The "put cat ears on everything" comment was also rubbish. That cat ear tank post was a meme post, if you couldn't tell just by looking at it. He had no intention on putting car ears on the tank, just helmets. If you don't believe me feel free to ask him yourself. I can send you a discord link to two discords he is in for you to ask him yourself if he is available. I understand some players don't like cosmetics running rampant in the community. But that is on RPG and only on them. They allowed it into the game and have even made worse "non-Planetside 2 styled" cosmetic". The Vikings was just the worst quality ones. How about the Oshur bundle that has Conquistador armor, Crab armor, and that ugly spiky Pirate armor? What about the bundle that has that ugly orange Eastern NS Esamir warpgate texture? What about the new weird looking ice helmets? There is plenty more, just don't dis my Giraffe camo. It is beautiful. This is just the powers at be being fed up and being petty. All this "drama" happened when some guy from RPG (daybreak at the time, I think) asked G1ngerB0y to make a construction helmet for the construction update, then the layoffs happened they cut him off cold turkey. No comments, no "We no longer want a construction helmet", no thing. Again, you can ask him yourself if you don't want to take my work for it. My take is that RPG is well in their right to remove his content, but they deserve all the flak they are getting for their decision. It only took them a day to remove his stuff after he posted of their Viking bundle that besides that TR stuff, has horrible cosmetics. ESPECIALLY the VS helmet and armor.

I like the jump in logic to go from cat ears = sexual because if someone apparently goes digging it comes from some anime/manga(which I highly doubt is the real origin of cat ears) but vikings are ok. Vikings that, lets say it this way, had a lot of fun with the women they encountered on their travels. If we want to go digging for "sexual" stuff and want a topic to avoid it, vikings is REALLY not the one to go for. Pirates is similarly not a great theme if you want it to hold up to seemingly arbitrary scrutiny of its origins.

It's a great point that yes, every culture or phase of humanity has sexuality attached to it, either subtly or transparently. We won't mention what the pirates or the vikings did when they landed on the shore of a poorly defended settlement of sorts. With that being said, it's the difference between a warring culture with some level of sexuality attached to it and an element of pure sexuality. I'm no prude, personally, far from it, but so far every single woman I've met or dated did not shy away from putting on a pair of cat ears and radically change her behaviour from that point on, if only briefly. Women of all ages, heights, weights and so on associate with cats/felines, and it brings about a sexual nature that's stimulating for them. Call it roleplay, call it whatever you want. The connection's there and it's undeniable. So to call "cat ears = sexual" a leap of logic just hits that either you've dated more old school women ( because this is a more modern trope, admittedly ) or just not enough women in general. The point of my reply is not a dig at you, however, but rather the idea that the take you presented could be less than correct.

No suggestions what a pirate or viking should be doing? As someone who's in the 3D art creative spaces around this game that I have to say, I really think you missed the mark on this one Cyrious. Perhaps it's due to my perspective, and my experiences dealing with the planetside community, but I also think your very unique position may be skewing your views a little here. So, in short, Ginger (the Lynx helmet guy) really did this to himself. He was complaining at the devs about this one helmet for over 2 years, and it's clear they decided to simply cut ties with him specifically, because of it. They're a business and that's their right to deal with or not deal with their contracters as they see fit. It's worth mentioning, that while player studio closed, many of the creators were kept on as contractors, which is why they can and do still create and submit things. Unfortunately, RPG don't seem interested in talking to any new creatives. While I agree that it doesn't really fit the theme of the game, I don't see the harm in it as long as it's kept subtle, and I don't think your argument about sexualisation of it holds much water... but then I do deal with catgirls and the like regularly in VR in totally non-sexual contexts far more than I've ever seen them in any sexual context, so it's not impossible that my views here are biased. However, the biggest problem in my eyes, is the communication. Ginger found out that a non-insignificant revenue stream for him, had been entirely cut, in the patch notes of a game he plays. It's not only punative measures against him (they could have simply said they won't accept new things if he were to keep it up), but it seems incredibly unprofessional to not so much as tell him. RPG are notoriously difficult to work with or talk to, and this is I think, where the issue of your position comes up. You, Arshee and Camikaze78 are the only creators who regularly seem to have much interraction with RPG. I understand that I'm likely on a blacklist and that could be why they won't talk to me, (i've been critical of them in the past and even made jokes at their expense (such as this: www.reddit.com/r/Planetside/comments/x5kysk/i_reskinned_the_ns15_when_do_i_get_my_job_offer/ )) but their lacking communication and unwillingness to work with the community asside from the "big 3" streamers is something I know frustrates other creatives. I'd honestly be really interested to hear your thoughts on this, as one of the afforementioned "big 3" streamers. I will also throw in here, that I don't think people like yourself are to blame at all. As you showed Heptagon_ru's image of his clown getup, I think it's clear that the ship has already sailed on that one.

Its quite a shame about the communication and ignoring newer creators, I remember submitting a mosquito skin in hope it would get added. 2 months pass and I hear nothing, then one of the "big" creatives posts a new thing he made on reddit, which was then added in the game like 2 weeks later, bypassing the whole supposed queue. I am still waiting for a response on my mosquito skin, its only been valid for soon 6 years. I'm surprised they have not changed much since then.

I'd like to throw in my two cents, specifically to take a jab at the sexualisation argument. I agree that it doesn't really hold well, and here's why: Sexualisation means to modify, create or treat something with the specific purpose of conveying an erotic effect. Usually its overt, but it can be covert too. Something like cat ears doesn't automatically = eroticism on its own, and this is evidenced by the fact that some people rebuffed Cyrious by claiming it's just "cute", as in their minds there is nothing erotic about it. Even I raised an eyebrow before Cyrious showed example images. Cat ears can be sexualised in the minds of some already, which can warp your perception on something cosmetic like that. To a lesser extent I think, but still notable, the entire Vanu aesthetic can too be sexualised; curvaceous bodies wrapped in skin-tight alloys can absolutely be considered a fetish - there's a reason that example image was distinguishably of a Vanu. Yes, it is aesthetically appropriate to them unlike cat ears, but does that mean they're no less susceptible to sexualisation? And on the point of kids and teens too, chances are if they connect cat ears with some erotic images in their minds, then that speaks more to their experiences than the helmet. Is it a sexual design if you never notice, or connect it to a different context? For these reasons, I don't think the sexualisation argument has much weight. What does have weight though is that it doesn't aesthetically fit, but that's really on DBG for not having tighter control over what cosmetics get in. I mean really, pink Vanu running around with cat ears? I think it's apparent whose fault that is.

I'm not a 3D artist, though it definitely caught my interest. But seeing this video made me think back to an idea I had: Would it be thematically fitting to have, as I would call it, Treason helmets? Say a Vanu infiltrator helmet painted blue with a hood over it? Or a TR Heavy Assault helmet painted purple and upgraded with a Vanu visor? Something to add a bit of lore, like soldiers switching sides?

I feel like it'd be next to impossible for a soldier of any faction to switch sides considering how much control their superiors have over them. They can disable their weapons at will, straight up just kill them if they go somewhere they're not allowed to go, and even if they did somehow escape they could technically just be respawned back to base for interrogation. Just a random thought, I love that cosmetic idea.

@@seriphan399 not exactly, considering that friendly fire is penalize yes, but only after several warnings. the troopers still have the illusion of freedom and since you can send friend request to people of other factions. yes, you can die at any time, but enforcing a kill switch would undermine the morale of the soldiers fighting and curb aggression towards the other side. I do think the player mentality of " we kill them on a regular basis, but i have kill jeff so many times we are on first names at this point" factor also comes to play. also, on sanctuary you can see npc of different factions just hanging with each other. I would like to see the civies aspect of the war. maybe there is a game aspect with vets and merch on the civies side. probably at first the recruits fight for "the cause" but after killing and being killed by jeff for the 100th time, it's just routine, and that probably bring the 3 factions into a stalemate in order to maintain their influence on auraxis government. hence why you have the regular army and goverment (TR), the mercs and corporate (NC) and the research and development, science and also a church on its infancy (VS) all securing infrastructure in oder to use political points with the auraxian population.

Network lag is the biggest reason people are leaving, not being denied manga styled cat helmets. This type of debate has gone on forever in the business world where fan creation crosses the line with the business owners views...Paramount and Star Trek, Tolkien Estate and all the books...sometimes you get an ok to modify the business, sometimes you don't, and yep it usually isn't fair, but they own the business and have to protect it.

I don't really know where you heard that people boycotted the Viking bundle because of cat hears ? Each time people are talking about this bundle, they're just saying that they don't want to buy it because it's ugly. The VS helmet is ugly, they fucked up with the bundle, that's it. The only link between vikings and PS2 is the valkyrie, that's it. They could've come up with a better sci-fi themed bundle for this one instead of surfing on the whole viking trend going on. It also lack polishing. A friend bought it for the prowler gun and it doesn't even have a kick back on it's main gun when firing which kills the feeling of this AP compared to the standard one. As for the cat hears, I don't see it often in game, maybe because I don't die enough time to be able to contemplate the skin of my targets.

Einherjar i still dont see a reason why not to add the cat ears. Aside from the camos, there are plenty of other "memey" asthetics in the game like the commissar TR hat, the samurai hat max head for the VS, or the NC's Cowboy hat. Even more, you have kazoo horns, shywhale stuff for the galaxy, AMR XOXO and the valentines crossbows' aswell as other event items, the voice packs themselves, the list goes on and on about things that defy the "futuristic scifi warzone" idea. I highly doubt anyone who actually enjoys PS2 would advocate for the removal of those other items. furthermore, cat ears are only sexual if you make them that way, otherwise they are "cute" or "memey" (we know you VS are just a bunch of weebs :b). also, rule 34. You could probably find some TR BDSM with the commissar hat if you really wanted to. however, if the creator is difficult to work with and is doing all this drama or w/e, then that seems to be an acceptable reason to not add more cosmetics specifically from that creator, but does not justify removing or vetoing cosmetics that share a similar style/theme.

I strongly disagree about the "lynx helmet not fitting in the game". While I agree with it having a bit of sexual connotation, that is not how I see the helmet. I actually wear the helmet without memeing or irony. Here is why I think cat ears can unironically fit a military setting : animal imagery and armed forces have for a long time been paired together, and that is still true today. Let's take some examples, as a Sabaton fan the first thing that comes to mind are the Chasseurs Ardennais who have a boar as a symbol. Even their motto is inspired by boars. But that's not all, there are some armed forces that actually wear physical equipment representing animal features. The Winged Hussars for instance, who wore wings on their mounts, and wings obviously represent birds. But what about cat ears then ? Well Zulu warriors typically wear leopard hides. This means we literally have real life examples of armed forces that wear feline ears. And between leopards, lions, tigers, panthers, etc... we can probably find lots of armed forces using some sort of feline features as a symbol or even as outfit embellishment. That mind be an unpopular opinion, but I genuinely think the lunx helmet fits the style of PS2. And I love that helmet. It being removed from the store is really disappointing to me.

Seems like a fun helmet I'd like. A couple lumps on the head aren't that glaring immersion breaking. Especially not when compared to other items in the game from the devs themselves. You even showed us that the creator took the time to try and make the helmet look more in-line with the games artistic styling. Obviously this man and other like him aren't the harbingers of aesthetic evil you claim they are. The only real downside is that the creator was sort of a jerk. Even then I doubt that every person who makes the game or everyone you play is is all sunshine and roses 24/7. You're telling me that ego is a justifiable basis to banish someone entirely? Have you MET daybreak or S.O.E. before it? Where is the evil here? How is this bad when the very creators of the game have done worse and not reverted the came into a colorful hellscape? You see sexual overtones because in your times in your experience cat girls were rare and this 1 manga happened to sexualize them. People like you who have been around for a while tend to forget that meanings and symbols change. What is sexual to you is just another moot variation of 'animal girl' to most people now. Those artworks posted were very clearly plays on old decals you would see U.S. military companies sporting during WW2 and Vietnam. The issue seems to be an aging man who fails to understand that even the games developers make off-brand silly items without destroying the games integrity and meanings change. Wants everything to stay in a neat little pile of aesthetic retention that was broken a long long time ago by the very creators he worships. Just say "creator was a jerk." and "daybreak did not want to work with him anymore." seems to be the actual story.

I am not any kind of creator; but I must say as an adult. There are A LOT of sexual undertones in everything you see and hear in everyday life. Personally I applaud Curious and the Devs for understanding that fact. To those that are mad or upset with that. I would simply say. Be more. There is more to life then trying to put sexual suggestions or suggestive themes in this game. I am generally on the side of Cyrious. But in my opinion the issue is long past discussion. There is sooooo much immersive breaking cosmetics in PS2 that it isn't worth arguing against cat ears. To me cat ears is just weeb culture. 99% of gamers (like me) don't know the actual origin. I didn't until Cyrious said it. So if we would be serious about having immersive cosmetics then we would have to remove about 30% of what you can get in the store and about ~80% of all camos depending on how serious you want to take the definition of camouflage. You can't really make the argument that cat ears are inherently sexual at this point. Are they inherently anime? Yes. But anime encompasses such a wide variety of works from all sorts of genres and themes that to declare all anime sexual is nonsensical; there's plenty of nonsexual shows featuring catgirls. It's a bit like arguing that Castlevania is sexual because Belmont uses a whip as his main weapon and whips are commonly associated with BDSM. As for aesthetics, I agree with you a little bit, but you should really consider that 1. As other people have mentioned, as far back as WWII pilots have painted soft porn on the sides of their planes (and we even have a lot of decals in Planetside 2 directly referencing that), and 2. Planetside is based around a bunch of soldiers with resurrective immortality fighting an endless, unwinnable war against another bunch of soldiers who also have resurrective immortality. I'll say that the point about sexual references is off-beat. Cat ear accessories are all over the place, cat ear headphones in stores. A cat ear helmet is not inherently sexual, that's just you not being able to separate the fan art from what's actually in game. For thematic consistency, that is a good point, but I think it's alright to let some things break that mold a bit. A helmet with two triangles on top are hardly a massive tone breaker.

Haven't played since, may not play again. Certainly not as much as I would've had they given notice or tried to work with the creator. The pinup decals for example have been around since the beginning, and while I don't use them they've been a reliable sight all the same. There's comfort in that. To me, the ears are just as inseparably VS, the suddenness of their removal basically shows me this game isn't what it used to be, nor the direction I want to see it take. Some "out of place" cosmetics are added, but some "more matching" ones aren't, everything feels arbitrary. Actually putting ears on a colossus might be a bit much, but the possibilities are the kind of humor I love?d? about this game. Deafening silence is practically an invitation to make ever louder noise, and it's worrying noone at SOE/DBG/RPG over the years were willing to respond, especially early on, when it would've been easier to simply say no, or ask the creator to make cosmetics one might call more thematic. It could've been a win-win, but alas noone seemed willing to do that basic courtesy yet perfectly fine letting one voice among a crowd of salty vets get louder. Also surprised there weren't a bunch of cat themed cosmetics for TR when player studio opened up, given how they'd match the gun names.

I didn't know about the pirate theme with oshur since I just got back into the game after several years. Recently unlocked nso and one helmet I would've loved to see is a pirate themed head cosmetic, maybe one of the "eye" sensors is broken and has an eye patch over it or something along those lines. I will say some of the helmets in game besides the cat ears are a little too outlandish for me like the hockey mask, flaming skull, and clown helmet. I wouldn't say it breaks the theme being a war game but something I'd like the cosmetics to avoid is breaking themes and while Vikings are cool you gotta remember the game is sci fi so you'd have to "futurize" them for lack of a better word to make sure they don't feel out of place, a great example of that would be the vaulters from endless space who are essentially that, space vikings, and I love their sleek modernized esthetic that still has Viking themes to it. Personally I feel as though planetside should be more strict with the cosmetics so as to maintain faction identity and not go overboard and be cartoonish. The aforementioned flaming head and clown helmets are great examples of the cartoon look I feel the game should avoid but other sets like the legionaire also kinda dance on the line a little bit. The outfit is very 40k which while I feel is really cool it does have that space fantasy esthetic 40k is famous for and I don't think it really fits the tr with how outlandish parts of the outfit are without toning some of it down but overall yeah I agree about the cosmetics needing to be more in line with the game, letting people make stuff is cool but they should be careful with what gets released so it doesn't break faction identity.

I think it should be noted that we are in a time now where many adults neither know nor question the origins of the cat-ear girls; I did not know of such origins myself until you explained it in this video. I believe it has been more than sufficiently long enough that the original meaning behind those accessories are lost on the majority of people, especially younger generations that have seen cat-ear headphones, cat-ear headbands, cat-ear tiktoks, etc. Therefore, the argument doesn't hold in today's standards when games targeting kids (i.e. Fortnite) have much more blatantly risque content. Neither does Planetside 2 have the attachment to realism (face it: all three factions are cartoonish caricatures of imperialism, corporatism, and theocracies) to necessitate as much gravitas as other games...say Battlefield or Escape from Tarkov. The argument for removal of content based on subliminal messaging is moot, even if the information you told me is factually correct. I would say that the pink camo has been more harmful to the game than cat-ears; cat-ears are still color-coded to the faction, but pink camos deliberately confuse players who do not over-rely on pinging enemies for visual confirmation. It's a paid advantage to confuse TR and VS players who both rely on red hues to identify friend from foe while the player running the pink camo does not have to think as much about visual confirmation on enemies. The financial success of pink camos only reflect this idea even further, as there exists a clear gameplay advantage to using it. I think Planetside 2 has suffered a long and slow death because of design decisions that have solidified an arbitrary idea of what the game "should" be according to the devs, rather than focus on competitive market advantages that PS2 has over other FPS games of its kind. The removal of quick-spawns to prevent overpop often prevents factions from bolstering ranks needed to counter a pop-dump. Oshur -- the newest continent -- has relatively limited lattice designs that make it very difficult shift theatres and encourages one-sided farming for hours on end. The removal of selecting vehicles from spawn menus -- likely an attempt to prevent armored columns from dominating the battlefield, only exacerbated the issue by preventing defending players from accessing their vehicle terminals quickly after encountering an armored column. The necessity of having two teammates in a squad to make it available in the Squad list helps with organized play, but most definitely prevents random players that aren't heavily invested in vocal coordination from presenting themselves as available to other random players. In isolation, these changes aren't bad, but together they interact poorly with each other and only serve to prevent random players from organically and naturally pulling themselves together, which would create the cohesive casual playerbase that every game needs to have to justify microtransactions. All this feature-cutting, content curbing, and nerfing done has only served to curtail the spectacle of the massive-multiplayer shooter that PS2 is supposed to be, and instead forces the players to deal with a Battlefield-lite game that is only marginally better than 2042. QoL in the UI has been sorely overlooked, such as retaining selected teleport points when switching off of the map to another UI section (i.e. I click on Waterson's Redemption, and then click on Loadout to change whatever I need to suit the impending battle, but then returning to the Map menu changes my selection back to my previous spawn instead of retaining Waterson's), which only further lowers the value proposition that this aging game has over more modern titles with sleeker, and better-designed UIs.

I mostly agree, except your sexual argument is pretty weak. The game already has pinup style art you can put on your vehicles, and that’s perfectly thematic. That said, though I am very kind of degenerate these kinds of cosmetics are made for, the aesthetic of an everlasting sci-fi war is more important. A cat girl painted on the side of my lightning or a cat ears hairband haphazardly taped onto the standard helmet would work, but purpose built furry armor is too far.

But at the same time, I don't think they shouldn't not be in, I personally wouldn't wear them but I know others who would. Yes I think the cat ears are cringe. This video was difficult to watch. You really missed the mark on this one, Cyrious. There's so much I want to say, but the matter of fact way you speak about this has convinced me you probably don't care enough to hear the counter arguments. I hope that isn't the case, but you have had plenty of time to hear them and addressed none of them in your video. I'll summarize some of the points I wanted to make anyway: You criticized people for not spending a few minutes looking into the numbers, and then publish inaccurate data about those same numbers. The data referring to 4773 units sold only includes the last 2 years, not the 5+ years the helmet has been available. You also compared PlanetSide 2's *revenue* to the *profit* of the helmet by wrongfully taking the artist's cut out of it. PS2 counts the artist's cut as part of its revenue. The helmet expectedly made PS2 about $23865 per year in revenue at the end of its life according to that data. It stands to reason that the majority of the sales happened earlier, and we don't have data on sales from that period. Beyond the data, you're comparing the very broad concept of Vikings to the specific concept of cat ears on helmets. The Valkyrie and Mjolnir have been in the game for a long time, and I don't think anyone was lobbying against that concept. The argument was never about the concept of Viking themes in PS2. The comparison was strictly against the Trickster's Helmet visual design, which you somehow neglected to show in your video. You speak at length about what is effectively just a strawman. The existence of clowns, cat helmets, shark helmets, goat helmets, rainbow camo, and succubi all need to be addressed by the devs before the artistic integrity argument will matter. Succubi and pin-up girl decals have a much greater argument for being sexual and get passes, but cat ears don't? Based on what? Your fan fiction preferences? I love wearing my high seas and legion armor but sometimes you just wanna have fun and not take the game too seriously, but I do agree on not turning the game into a Chinese mmo with crazy cosmetics
