I was looking at the financials of daybreak the other day. Made me glad to know they made about 116m SEK in 2021. Considering they are a company keeping many other franchises alive. We may never get a planetside 3. But i feel like with a little community support we may get to play planetside 2 until we are 80.

18 months was the "total" development time mind you they were given few weeks or months of deadline and expected them to be ready to ship out, which it was inevitably delayed, repeat this process until 18 months has passed. what this means is that tons and tons of rushed spaghetti codes, and mega crunch time for the employees.

Will always be a fan of planetside 2. And i find it kinda funny that they were trying to get planetsides gunplay as good as triple a games, and i feel like at this point, it has one of the most satisfying gunplay I've experienced yet. Also imagine ps2 being remastered in ue5 or something, that would be interesting.

I think during this interview, Matt touched on something that really underscores the problems that the game has faced in recent times, whether it was intentional or even unknowingly. He is hearing requests/demands both from the community and the executives. He knows that for the health of the game and the happiness of its players, he should work on a certain set of issues or features, but he MUST work on the issues and features the execs tell him to, otherwise he may not have a job tomorrow. I believe the current dev team, especially Wrel, are also facing these issues, and they're doing the best they can to compromise and try to make everybody happy, but falling short most of the time.

I think Warhammer 40,000 Eternal Crusades developers wanted to do the same scale as Planetside 2 but couldn't pull it off .The head developer was intervened and brought up how he wanted his game to be like Paneside 2 in scale.

That's what it was kinda advertised as being during development. The finished product was nowhere close to that kinda scale though. It was pretty disappointing, I still think a PS2-like Warhammer game would be awesome. But there are no other games like PS2 🤷

I remember that. I also remember you could really hear and see the heartbreak in his eyes in subsequent interviews when they realized they wouldn't be capable of it. It's such a shame it didn't happen because there's no better franchise where massive scale is so fitting than that of Warhammer

It was fun to watch this interview. I was actually one of the players who contributed quality-of-life suggestions to PlanetSide and PlanetSide 2, where over half of mine were implemented.

I started playing after Higby had already left PS2 so I wasn't really super excited going into the interview. Didn't know what to expect. But damn, I enjoyed the hell out the entire thing. Watched it on twitch and again on KZbin. Seems like a really cool guy to work with and just generally be around. Cool to hear those stories about the old days when I was still playing the wrong games 😅

Lifetime gamer. I stumbled across Planetside 2 purely by chance and had never played a "free to play" and had no experience with it's predecessor. One of the best games I've ever played and the most time invested in a game ever. I still remember vividly the initial drop into the tech plant and getting destroyed immediately as well as the Crown fights. If Higby were to ever be brought back would be epic. I know Wrel cares about the game but Higby was the last one that the passion for the game truly came across for me. F'ing legend. Amazing interview Cyrious.

This game really is like, in such a weird state, the fact that the game holds for so long without any marketing or adverts is impressive, you can tell that the low budget holds this game back alot.

It is a miracle the game still endure to this day despite all the technical hurdle, internal and management problems, it was a game ahead of its time, in some ways it still is. There are not that many games with similar scale in battle or the tech involve, even from big studios.

I was not a gamer at all until a friend got me into PS2 not too long after it was released. I can say that I am one of those salty old “higbys” that had so much misdirected “passion” at the devs, still am. But Higby is spot on in the fact that it comes from a place of love and longing for what this game could be if money was no object and the suits had as much passion as the players do! I would be all about a PS3, especially if folks like Higby, Andy, Smed, T-Ray and Luperza were on board!

I remember when Higby let the Magrider be nerfed and broken for 6 months. It couldn't climb 1ft tall berms on the side of a road. VS complained about it endlessly but Higby said it was fine. Finally, after 6 solid months of complaining he climbed out of his Vanguard and got into a Magrider. He instantly saw it was broken and the nerfs were reversed within two days. - None of the Devs played VS, so VS didn't matter. That's pretty poor game management, but that's the reason Smedley picked Higby to run Planetside, because Smed knew he could boss the inexperienced Higby around and run the game with Higby as a proxy. SOE failed because Smedley wanted to micromanage everything and he hired underlings that were happy to have the job and let him do it.

I hate planetsides ceo making the stupid calls but I love the game and the developers for trying their best in a unwinnable situations between bottom line cheap profits vs high risk high reward work decisions. This is completely why I don't believe big companies have no real clout now to even suggest only they can do it. Even if they could they won't because for them the cheapest method to make the most money is the only method they believe in. Even though we have a miles of graveyard of companies that thought that same thing.
