*Will the new Local Browse feature make you give Lightroom a shot?*
@WilliamParmley

I've been reluctantly trying it and the latest changes make it much better. I still don't understand why they deviated from long-standing LR standards (e.g., Versions and "z" for "pick"), so I still get confused. I do like how well it integrates with LR Mobile. (Much prefer my 32 inch monitor to a 6 inch screen for editing, and I hate the dark gray text on a darker gray background of LR Mobile.)

Brian, in local are edits saved with the locals? Xmp?, is there a save option? Do you only "save" when you sent to cloud

I'm not happy with saving from a processed images back to LR. Too many extra steps. Also there are no Published Services and I found that very convenient for SmugMug.

How about smart collections? I can live without the missing LrC features in Lr but not having a way of “grouping” your images without having to run a search every single time seems lacking.

I've been using LR for almost two months after using LRc exclusively for all my photo edits. This new feature makes things the way I wanted them for the longest. Also, I don't necessarily need to purchase more cloud storage. A win win for me for sure. Thank you for the tutorial.

Exactly right! I suppose it'd be understandable to assume that some Classic users would see this feature and think that they have to move entirely over to LR. But, my approach is that this now gives you the ability to dip your toe in the water, see what it's like, and choose exactly what you want to sync without really losing out on any of Classic's core features.

Most hobbyists (maybe pros too?) take a lot of crap photos that get tossed after culling/editing to land on the 10% keepers. It makes sense to manage those locally first, then move the keepers into the cloud ecosystem for the access and workflow flexibility you describe. There are other software programs to cull, of course, but it's nice to be able to do it all within one product. It's not perfect, but it is an improvement.

Fully agree ! I love the idea of having my Keepers backed up in the cloud but being able to cull the crap shots. Up to now I used LRC for that reason .

Hey Brian, nice to hear and see you! Regards from Austria where I an with my photo group at the moment. I will not even consider switching from Classic until the storage is reasonable - both in price and in size. After watching your video I went to Adobe website trying to find the pricing for different storage amounts but they don't even have a price list available. Only for 1Tb. My photo archives are well above 7Tb so it definitely doesn't seem worth the hassle. Saving only selected images to the cloud while others stay on local disk seems only adding complexity to the workflow so no.

Hey Luka! So great to hear from you! I miss our time roaming around your beautiful country of Slovenia and hope we get to do it again soon. In the meantime, I hope Austria treats you and your workshop attendees well! I completely understand your hesitation and concern. I've said it numerous times that the next thing Adobe needs to figure out is how to offer larger amounts of cloud storage at a reasonable price so that photographers with huge libraries who want to manage them in the cloud can do so without breaking the bank. However, I will say that the local browse feature is still huge because it addresses one of the most common requests from Classic users that I've heard over the years. I don't see this as the end of Adobe's plan to get more people to consider Lightroom, but rather the first major step in a long journey.

I am a Lr (non-Classic) user and this is going to greatly simplify my workflow. I have a local folder of all my photos in which I try to maintain the same folder structure as my albums in the cloud. Now I will be able to easily view that local structure right in Lr. LOVE this update. Thanks for making this video to explain it so well!

I would love a video that talks about local storage in great detail for Lightroom mobile. Including how to work retroactively. Let's say I have a whole year's worth of stuff that I've put on an external drive. How would that backup look like, if I just exported them as DNG + Settings? Should I just start afresh (by erasing what I've backed up) and backup locally to that drive? Also if I am on my work computer, and I hit back up local, I guess it will ask for where I want to back up, or does it just start backing up on the computer itself? Just some ideas for your next video, I guess.

I switched to LR years ago and agree, this is the better version. Having access to my photos across multiple devices means a lot to me. And like you said, people forget that this is a level of backup for the entire library. Thanks for the video. I just subscribed to your channel.

Thanks for the kind words and for the sub, Robert! The fact that syncing in Lightroom is also a powerful form of backup is often lost on many users. Sure, you can use other cloud-based systems to backup your photos (and you really should have some for of cloud backup), but none of them offer a world-class photo editing suite atop it. That's where all of this comes together and makes it unbeatable for me.

I like this idea...but the fact is that some functions are still only available in Lightroom Classic, like as you mentioned still deterrents me from switching fully. But I believe eventually Adobe will combine the two as it doesn't make sense for Adobe to keep supporting two code bases. I am perfectly fine with that, I like the new design and layout. At least they are making strides to that point but, for me, for now, I'll be sticking with Classic. Great video though!! You're easy to listen to.

@@brianmatiash I don't know a ton about the newer Lightroom version but by the looks of it in your video, the local option seems to be pretty minimal in terms of having ways to organize like with collections and tags, etc like how you can in Classic. I could be wrong, but it seems like photos would require to be uploaded to cloud to be able to do those things.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
You're not wrong, mate. The Local browse is effectively a window to your photo library as you've organized it yourself. You can create new folders, rename folders and files, and move/delete files as you would with a standard file browser. You also have keyword and rating support (stars and flags). Lightroom, as a whole, does not have collections support, so that was never in the cards. Lightroom uses a Folder/Album structure to organize cloud-based images. Ironically, you can only change filenames locally, but not with cloud-synced files. As far as I can tell, files need to be copied to the cloud in order to use stacking, AI search, and versions control. Just about every other Lightroom feature is available locally.

@@brianmatiash I have made the switch but there’s one feature in Classic that I sorely miss: Survey View. I used it as a really quick way to blast through a set of similar photos to get the best one. @davep6603 not gonna lie, I do miss Survey view. Compare is ok, but it’s kinda limiting to review one photo against another. The thing is, I wouldn’t rule out seeing this feature down the line. I mean, I wouldn’t hold my breath either, but I think we’ll see something eventually.

That's an excellent overview - thank you. What I don't yet understand is how to get the workflow right: up until now, iPhone photos would sync to Lightroom Mobile / Adobe Cloud and would be available in both Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic (in an automated target folder). If I drop Lightroom Classic now (which I'm ready to do), I still have incoming pics in Lightroom CC, but not on the local drive anymore. In other words: the ability to upload pictures to the cloud from the "local" view is great, but technically I'd need it the other way round and get selected images from the cloud to de-sync and just be local. (Yes, exporting and putting them in a folder, then delete in LR CC, but that would be a very clunky workflow, wouldn't it?).

If you enable the option to store local copies of all photos within Lightroom's preferences (on the desktop), then all images imported from your phone's camera roll would be synced to the cloud and downloaded to a local drive/folder of your choosing. Granted, only the file itself would be downloaded and not the edit history because that is all managed in the cloud. Does that help?

That's a great question, Betty Lee! Unfortunately, the answer is no. Once you copy a local file to the cloud, you now have two separate instances of it. You can edit and sync local photos as often as you'd like, and an "Auto Version" will be created each time you do. However, if you edit a photo that's in the cloud, those changes will not flow back to the local version. And that's a good thing because it'd be easy for your photos to get totally out of whack when you've got multiple versions, each with their own edits.

Great thank you@@brianmatiash . I actually tested that out before you responded back and you're absolutely right (hence my edited comment). Thanks for the insight about wacky multiple versions. This new update actually saves me the hassle of adding Lightroom Classic and the only reason I'd do that was be able to work off my external drive. I want to thank you and Matt K for this video and the podcast you did recently on this with him. Long story short I just migrated from a PC to a Mac Studio. Let's just say moving my LrC catalog has been a total nightmare. I have over 20TB of photos (I know you covered deleting on the podcast but I'm just not there yet). I was really hoping that LrC would be able to access all my photos stored on a NAS with a 10Gb connection from the Studio to the NAS but it just wasn't working. I was having a very hard 4 days making this work. Yesterday, on the way home from a game (I shoot a lot of sports) I stumbled on the podcast. To be honest it was the first Matt K podcast I have listened to, and it was like you guys were speaking directly to me. I have played around with Lr (as opposed to LrC) but never dove in. I got home last night and dove deep. Its great. I can download from the card to my local harddrive (I run the import thru Adobe DNG converter because I still prefer DNGs mainly because I don't want to keep track of XMP files, and they're smaller), do my edits, sync my edited shots to the cloud, and then copy the folder over to the NAS, directly in Lr. Meanwhile, browsing through all my old stuff on the NAS is very easy and fast with the 10Gb speed. I'm not going to repeat all the things you talked about on the pod re some of the requests people want in Lr. I initially didn't know how I'd live without virtual copies but versions seems better - hopefully they will add that to 'Local' soon. I also understand that all the LrC metadata may be overkill but the metadata in Lr is a bit sparse - seems like an easy add. Topaz Photo AI integration would also be nice but that is easy enough to work around by just converting your photos to TIF and then running them all thru PhotoAI directly. Since Lr is a browser and not a catalog the new corrected TIFs just show up in Lr. Thank you again - the timing of this could not be better! David

I get the Copy to Cloud feature, which allows you take images from the local storage and copy them to the cloud. What I am looking for is a way to not have to buy more than the 1TB storage when it is full, and archive a large number of images locally Is the a way to take photos from the cloud and copy/ove them to local storage. That would be pictures that are no more active and worked on in my case, so I do not need to maintain easy cross-platform access to them. Seems like the feature is designed to support local storage with an incentive to move stuff to the cloud , but does not let you go the other way around without exporting.

The thing is with Lightroom Classic you can still backup a copy of your full library without using any cloud space. Is not a full copy, but a smart preview. So what I do is Sync everything on Lightroom classic and then use the smart preview on lightroom and lightroom mobile. I made all the edits there, and then if I need a full-resolution version I just go to the computer and export that. But 90% of the time the exported smart preview is enough.

Three days ago I made the final switch from using both versions to using just LR (except for specific reasons I may use Classic) For testing I have just been shooting small object STILLS placed on my desk. (makes it easy to switch from shooting to the Mac 😉) iPhone 14 Pro Max / Pro Camera app. That app allows for exporting (sharing) to LR - that's about as simple as it can be! That camera app also can AirDrop to my Mac which sets up a good scenario for testing the Local tab features. I think I'm liking the LR Local Tab feature more and more as I test further.

As a person who is traditionally a tech bro and does photography as more of a hobby I do not want to sync anything to the cloud ever. I have my own backup solution across multiple locations following the 3, 2, 1 principal adobe and other cloud providers have lost too many people's data too many times for it to be reliable. I wish i could have the superior lightroom CC software that is faster and nicer looking but entirely local no cloud at all I was hoping this would work for that, but having just a file browser without proper organisation doesn't help (if you want to use albums you have to sync to the cloud, no local catalogue file, no ability to choose how the catalogue file is managed)

Great video- and great discussion with Matt K on his podcast. 2 questions: 1. Where is the metadata for the changes that you make? There's no longer a catalog of those changes- are sidecar files being used? 2: What exactly are you uploading to the cloud when you synch- the raw file or jpg? And if a raw file, again- where's the data being stored that reflects how that file will be generated? Thank you- looking forward to starting your Lightroom Everywhere course!

So if I may ask you or others on this. Before this last update. I would take a photo from my phone and would magically show up on my desktop classic.I somehow had a folder on my desktop. It just worked, now it does not. Phone pics do not show on the desktop (LR classic), they show up in LR but not in the folder for camera photos that was set up? So what happened? if so how do I fix it? I also liked being able to show clients on my iPad their images that were synced to LR. Very interesting video, thank you. I came to it from watching your podcast with Matt K. I’ve downloaded Lr and had a play - taken into account all the positives you mention. Many questions and some concerns though. You showed how you can access your folders easily. True, but surely these are the unedited original versions as the edits are in LrC? I shoot rugby and have a decade or so’s worth of images, many synced in collections (games). I like the idea of them being copies rather than originals. I can share the collections with my audience and the copies are good enough for local newspapers to print. I fear that if I copied all of these to the cloud full size, I’d very quickly reach my limit. I would very much like to make the switch but for now I don’t see it as being possible for me. Thanks again!

3:31 "Actual backups of your original files" - honestly not trying to be pedantic, but are these photos really backed up ...in the traditional understanding of what a backup is? Can a deleted file be recovered, or a corrupted file be reverted to an earlier version?
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
Totally fair question, David. In my book, cloud backup means that I can view/browse and retrieve the file from any device that has an internet connection, and Adobe does offer that function. In the event that my laptop blows up along with my local external drive that has all of my images backed up, I can get a new laptop and hard drive, launch Lightroom, and have every single original file downloaded locally. So we're good there. Can a deleted file be recovered? Yup, but within reason. When you delete a photo that has been synced to the cloud in Lightroom, regardless of the device, it is placed in a "Deleted" folder. That folder will store your deleted photo for 60 days, after which it will be permanently deleted. At any time during those 60 days and from any device, you could restore that photo to its original location and manually purge it. So we're good there. It's important to make the distinction, as I did in this video, that this is not the case with the Local browse feature. That is a standard file browser and will delete any local file by moving it to the local Recycle Bin. As for corrupted files, I've never experienced that before. Adobe has significant fault tolerances and system checks that reasonably prevent corruption. However, in the event that some local files associated with Lightroom get corrupted, all you need to do is uninstall and reinstall the app. Because the photos and edit history are stored in the cloud, there are no material concerns about recovering from a corruption. So, we're good here. Let me know if this addresses your questions. Like I said, it's a great thing to ask, and I'm glad I had the chance to provide some context.

I generally use Adobe Bridge to make ACR edits and manually organize my photos by folders. Now that we have a new version of Lightroom for MacOS, (not Classic) that enables local file browsing, I was stoked to try out the mobile version for my iPad. But I was greatly disappointed to find out that you cannot browse an external drive on an iPad the way you can with a MacBook. Why do they make it so hard!? I have an external SSD for my archive photos, and I can see the photos with the Files app and other file browsers, but they will not show the ACR edits. I just want the mobile Lightroom app to function like the desktop version and let me browse an external drive without importing to the cloud. SO frustrating…The iPad is perfect for photo browsing, but it’s like everything is on lockdown. And no other software seems to read ACR edits. Why, why, why???! 😖

Simple question: local edits are great, after the local edit you sync it to the cloud and want to edit further on the ipad. Now the edits on the ipad syncs to the cloud. It’s a fair question. The truth is that the cloud version of any photo should be considered the master record. As soon as you copy a photo from Local to Cloud, you have two instances of it and that’s just how it is. My recommendation is to only edit the cloud copy of any photo that you choose to copy there and leave the local version alone. Does that make sense?

@@brianmatiash Yes, it makes sense in the way how it works for now. Such an approach could work when culling locally and editing the culled photos in the cloud. That being said, an option to overwrite the local OR the cloud version for the made edits with a simple timestamp check would be preferred. Why else can we edit locally? That would make perfect sense right? One step further: by choice and only by choice we should have the option to choose we upload smart previews and raw files or update/attach a raw file to a smart previews when needed.
@brianmatiash

@AngelusHD so the Raw vs smart preview debate… I don’t see that ever happening because Adobe made their primary value proposition known in that with LR, you know that you’re original files are synced and backed up to the cloud. I think the whole Smart Preview sync in LRC was more of an olive branch to those users, but I have zero actual insight there. Regarding local editing, I mean… you can continue to sync edits from local to cloud and they will be saved as Auto versions with timestamps and all. It’s probably the best case scenario when working in a hybrid local/cloud environment. I think the primary point of Local is to allow users to browse and select what they want to sync instead of an all-or-nothing approach.

The only way to get your entire LR Catalog into Lightroom is to use its migration tool which will check to see whether you have sufficient cloud storage first. While you can sync your catalog in Lightroom Classic, it'll only upload smart previews... which don't count against your cloud storage quota and is usually more than adequate for most use cases. If you want to store all of your original files, then you'll either have to use the migration tool and ensure enough space or you can use the local browse in Lightroom. In my tests, when I browse to a folder with an image that I edited in Classic, I do see the edits reflected in Lightroom. From there, I can choose specific images or folders to manually copy to the cloud.

Hey Brian! Hope you are well. I've had this video in a tab waiting to watch it and finally got to it this morning. I'm a pretty hardcore Classic user and for me it really comes down to the idea of thinking of the cloud as the canonical version. LR embraces this method, but like others here in the comments, I have many terrabytes of images stored locally and there's no reasonable way to have all those stored in CC. That means I have to choose what I want to store in the cloud. It's just another step that doesn't seem worth it as I generally only use one computer for photo editing and management. I'm also just very used to the classic interface for editing and find the Cloud/mobile version slow and clunky.
@brianmatiash

Hey Dan! It's great to hear from you, man! I see this Local browse feature as one of Adobe's first major overtures to get those Classic users who may be on the fence about switching to give it a shot by removing the requirement to sync all imported photos to the cloud. I also believe that this experience will only get better and more streamlined. And if Adobe can aggressively adjust the pricing of expanded cloud storage, I think that'll convince even more people to make the switch. But you are correct in that it'd serve any LR user best to see the cloud version of all images as canonical. In terms of having many terabytes of photos, I challenge you on that. I don't doubt that you have multiple terabytes of photos. I used to have about 9 TB of photos. However, I can guarantee you that the vast majority of them didn't need to exist. I don't think I even have 1-2 TB of photos that I need to keep. We've been trained to keep every single photo that we take because local storage prices have become negligible. However, not every photo taken needs to be kept. That's just the hard truth. A lot of my photos are either duplicates from me shooting burst mode sequences (where I really only need 1-2 of the best shots) or they're bracketed exposures for HDR that I obsessively took early in my photography career. I mean, I bracketed everything. Finally, there are PSD and TIFF files that take up the *vast* majority of my storage space. I can't remember a time when I needed to re-edit the layers of a PSD or TIFF, yet each one is anywhere from 500 MB - 1+ GB. Exporting those as JPEGs and deleting the PSD/TIFF files cut my total photo storage massively. I bring this up because I know that many photographers are actually interested in adopting a cloud-based workflow, but haven't done what's necessary to cull their libraries to a more manageable size. Even 1 TB is a massive amount of storage, and I suspect that a lot of photographers could whittle their libraries down with some time and effort... and by reminding themselves that it actually is ok to delete photos. As for the differences between LR and LRC, I can't say much about that. It took me a few days to get used to the new UI, and I now prefer it 100% over LRC. To me, LRC is way too cluttered. Also, LR crushes LRC in terms of performance... at least on my computer.

Hi Brian,great video and thanks for the update. There is a assumption that everyone always has a good internet connection and for US, most of Europe and many other parts of the world that is correct however in many parts of the world that is just not the case so LR Classic is a godsend. I live in Singapore where we have up to a 2gB internet connection but travel to some of the surrounding countries and we are into the low MBPS connection speeds so syncing hundreds of large raw files is just not possible. @brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
If you sync a photo to the cloud and enable the option to "store a copy of all originals," Lightroom will download a copy of that original file to the local destination you choose. No edits are downloaded, though. That is all managed by Lightroom in the cloud. The local backup file is there solely for your peace of mind. Now, if you delete that photo from the cloud, it'll be placed in a Deleted folder. That photo will remain there for 60 days, whereby you can either choose to restore it or purge it manually before that time is up. After 60 days, Lightroom will automatically purge that photo. Here's the important point. When that photo is purged, whether it's because you did so manually before those 60 days or after the 60 days are up, the photo will be gone from the cloud AND from your local backup copy. Lightroom will delete it from both places. So, if you want to still retain a local copy, you'll first have to make a copy of that local file to another location. I do cover this workflow, and many other important ones, in great detail in my course, Lightroom Everywhere. www.matiash.com/lightroomeverywhere?

You can continue to sync changes from local to cloud (although it requires you to manually click the copy button each time), however the opposite is not true. Edits to the cloud copy will not sync to the local copy. That’s why I advocate for using all cloud-synced photos as the primary version and keeping the local copy as a backup. Is there a way to roundtrip to photoshop and thereby use plugins?
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question. The good news is that you can! If you right-click on a photo, you can select "Edit in Photoshop." Lightroom will open a TIFF document in PS, where you can edit the image however you'd like. When you save it, PS will create that TIFF file and it'll appear in the local folder next to the original file.

How do you get rid of duplicates photos in Lightroom
@_HMCB_
@_HMCB_ Жыл бұрын
After all that explanation, I’m still wondering if the copied-to-cloud file is left as RAW or is it now a different file format? And are the subsequent synced edits actually individual files or are they simply referenced as versions despite the fact there’s only one file in the cloud? (Meaning Adobe is making an alias of the edits.)
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
The file that is copied to the cloud will be whatever the local format is. So, if you copy a RAW file, the actual RAW file will be uploaded and backed up. Same goes for DNGs, JPGs, TIFFs, etc. If you have the backup option enabled in Lightroom, those same original files will be downloaded. When you make subsequent edits to a local file that you've already synced to the cloud, every time you click on that "Update" button, Lightroom will create a new Auto Version on the cloud copy of that file. Remember - the local file and the cloud file are separate. Edits that you make to that file in the cloud *do not* sync to the local verison. It's kind of a one way street. Let me know if that helps clarify things.

Any thoughts on Feb 2024 and the ceasing cloud synching? Frankly I feel betrayed after 25+ years of purchasing their software and later the subscriptions.

Just to clarify, adobe cloud syncing isn’t ceasing as in the storage method used for Lightroom, etc. What is being discontinued is Creative Cloud Synced Files. You can learn more about it here: helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/eol-creative-cloud-synced-files.html#:~:text=Starting%20February%201%2C%202024%2C%20Adobe,Cloud%20for%20Teams%20business%20account.

@cameraman655 you can certainly purchase additional cloud storage, but you’ll want to contact Adobe Support to help with that because I believe there are certain storage amounts that you’ll have to choose from.

Is there a way to move photos that are currently in the cloud to a local drive and maintain the edit history?
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
Not that I'm aware of. When Lightroom downloads your original files (assuming you have that option enabled), only the file itself is retrieved. The edit history is managed by Adobe in the cloud. You can export an edited file as Original + Settings to get that info, but it is not done automatically. I do cover this workflow, and many other important ones, in great detail in my course, Lightroom Everywhere. www.matiash.com/lightroomeverywhere?

Ahh, I see what you mean. Yeah, unfortunately there is no way for LR on the iPad to browse the local file structure the way that you can with the Files app. I would LOVE to see that come to the iPad and iPhone... and that may happen eventually. Apple is showing signs of allowing 3rd party apps to access the local file system and external drives, which would seriously enhance the LR experience on mobile devices. And you are correct - as soon as you begin editing a "device" photo, it automatically gets copied to the cloud.

That right there is the deal killer for me. I’ve been using LRc since v 3.0. My biggest problem is when I travel and don’t have an internet connection or one that can’t handle the upload from a days shooting. I therefore bring a laptop with LRc on it and use that catalog, when I get home, I merge it with my desktop catalog. I’m one of the people who have been asking for Local storage for YEARS. But if I have to bring the laptop to use LR CC anyway, where’s the benefit? I’d much rather have the same functionality on my iPad for travel. When that happens, I will look very hard a migrating over. Nice video, I’m new here and your content is well done! I’m binging on your videos now.

I like that Adobe is listening and continuing to develop Lightroom. That being said, I am a Classic only user. I am willing to try Lightroom to see if the performance is better on my older computer. I'm not sure I like the complexity of files in the cloud, files locally, and original files backed up elsewhere and versions popping up. The confusion doesn't seem worth it for my workflow, but it is interesting.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
I will say that LR has always been much faster than LRC, at least in my experience. That’s the benefit of being built atop a newer code base. As for the complexity of this newer workflow, that’s the compromise with having a fully local file browser/editor. It’d be much more complex for Lightroom to have to call back to local original files every time a change is made. That’s why the cloud-based files and edits are considered the master records, and why I’d want users to really understand how edits are managed in cloud vs local. Still, I think this will only get better over time.
