Haise is Kaneki though, not some kind of separate entity. When Arima manipulated Kaneki into accepting the name "Sasaki Haise", Kaneki's consciousness didn't just magically disappear and get replaced by a new consciousness. The pain and suffering we see Haise go through when regaining his memories is actually just more of Kaneki's suffering, and it shows Kaneki's conflict between wanting to stay in his happy, comfortable life as Haise, but also wanting to accept his past.

I think the reason the anime warrants so much of a mixed opinion is because of the very tumultuous relation it had with the author and the continuous times they had the chance to make something better but decidedly did not follow through. Root a was pretty much whiplash for even the anime audience because a lot of the decisions they had kaneki made was both offscript from the manga and what Ishida had drafted up for them as it was intended to be the final season. So when they introduced season 3 and 4 they pretty much told their audience to read the Manga because they weren't going to explain how they got to where they are now.

Not really. If you watch the anime (specifically s3 & 4), the pacing becomes inconsistent and we jump too fast to the next scene without any subtlety or build up. Heck, not a lot of the scenes were explained much, leaving only the viewers to try to fill in the blanks unless they read the manga. S1 had a pretty good start. S2 was alright. TBFH, I want somebody like Ufotable to pick up the anime and revive it (keeping the old music, of course). It's such an insult to the fans and the viewers of what we got. Only one can dream.
