Everything needs practice,so does this tehnique,but trust me its worth to know all this as you'll never know when you'll need it....
So instead of sanding with 60 grit there are other stuff that you know that might deal with that pesky grain.
Hopefully this will help out someone.

Fantastic Tomislav! I don’t have any spindle gouges large enough for this technique. Would it be too aggressive to try with a 40/40 bowl gouge? My gut says probably violent catch territory??

Thank you sir, well you will probably loose bevel contact but if not sure you can always try spining the spindle with hand presenting gouge and see what happens before you turn on the lathe

Something to note, for me it is much easier to back hollow with wings on a gouge that are slightly elliptical, at least for me. Wings the are flat, alway seem to go slow and heat up, where ever so slight elliptical wings do the job nicely.. translation .. it might be harder to learn to back hollowing with a perfectly jig sharpened gouge at least at the outset.i Thanks for the videos, they are great.

Definitive curved wings helps a lot,mine are also curved, not straight,camera usually don't pick it up

Nope, better avoid as the grain goes different ways and you can have major catch

I'm not sure you've mentioned why you use a spindle gauge instead of a bowl gauge to do this technique. I've seen others say to never use a spindle gauge for hollowing, so I assumed you have a reason to use one for this technique.

Well , usually they say to not use spindle gouge on cross grain deep hollowing,but this is small scale and even if it was deeper with proper tehnique its ok.... But bowl gouge is ok as well

No worries Brian, thank You for watching I had turner roughly 3,5inch diameter like this, as long as your tool is long enough, but scraper is in most cases easier ane better tool to finess the curve.... Especially on bigger stuff But if the grain doesn't wanna scrape then this comes in handy

Nope, Hooks are just not avaible and I'm no good at blacksmith as Japanese turners, I like using spindle gouge but bowl gouge can be used as well

Im just starting out turning i practiced making bowls and saw your shot glass videos on back hollowing. So i tried It not realizing that it was a more advanced technique. Im happy to say though that it was the second technique i learned working on the lathe. Still working on making it faster and smoother cutting but ive only used a spindle gouge and figured out how to scrape the inside with the gouge seeing as i dont have a scraper yet.

Very interesting technique and something I will definitely try. At first it won't be on anything to which I'm emotionally attached. 😄 Your demonstration illustrated something I finally understood after initially having issues using the tools -- if you are properly riding the bevel and presenting the tool to the wood correctly, it doesn't matter how quickly one moves the tool, one can even hold it stationary and no harm will come of it. I initially thought when I was having issues that I wasn't moving the tool fast enough across the wood and tried to speed past the trouble points and got the expected disastrous results doing so. 🤦‍♂ 🤷‍♂
