I personally feel like it’s no longer about passion in make up. It’s more on OVER CONSUMPTION of products… if you think about it, majority of these products are pretty much the same with different prices/brand BUT YOU JUST HAVE TO HAVE IT BECAUSE of the hype, and it’s the hottest thing one day

I feel bad saying this, but I don’t trust PR reviews. It started with the $600 Dyson airwrap. It’s insane to me how many influencers got it in PR and were “get it” as if it was an accessible item and not something that is potentially a 1/3 of your rent. Or when they promote brands like La Mer and Natasha Denona (back when the palettes were $250)
@Kayla_P99

Excellent video. Somebody had to say it. I find it interesting that most of the pressure to recycle and minimize waste is put on the consumer. As Kelly said, it's a law in many places. What regulations do they put on those multimillion/billion dollar corporations? We can ALL recycle everyday but until they change their wasteful practices, nothing will change. Thanks for bringing some attention to that.

First of all... the eye look is super cute! Love the wearable blue. Also, I love hearing your choice on minimizing PR. I realized that part of the reason I like your channel more than others I follow is because you don't go over a million different products and brands so it is easier to know what is good/isn't good because I have a reference point when you say 'this is better than my kosas concealer' or something like that. With other YTers, it's hard for me to know what they actually like and dislike the most because every time they have a new video it's a completely new line up of products I'm seeing for the first time and probably won't ever hear of again.

I love your transparency on this topic! I used to be on my PR lists when I was still an Instagram influencer, but when I stopped that for my mental health, brands dropped me. I'm still on some because I still have my blog (and a small fun IG account). I've been a brand ambassador for DERMA E since 2015, and I'm glad they've kept me. Their boxes are minimal packaging, with recycled filler. Sometimes I get unexpected boxes, but they often send out surveys about specific products. This is great because my skin doesn't need all of their products, so I can decline products for acne, oily skin, etc. I still get a lot of offers from brands who want to be on my blog, but I've gotten really picky about accepting offers. Same with joining affiliate programs. I only work with companies with ethical and sustainable practices. I know a lot of viewers are skeptical of PR reviews. I get it, but it's important to evaluate on a case-by-case basis. Coming from the influencer side, I can recognize a brand partnership that isn't properly disclosed. I trust creators who are transparent about a PR review, a sponsored post, and a regular review. Like I often create content on DERMA E products I purchased myself, and I still disclose that I've worked with them in the past.

Hey Kelly! I love your deep dive videos and your makeup look was really beautiful in this video. I have a degree in PR as well; I find this topic fascinating because I also studied environmental science and am passionate about cruelty free beauty. One thing that I think is reminiscent of earlier PR issues with influencers is the brand trips coming back. I've seen a lot of influencer trips hosted by beauty brands popping up again and know that those can pressure good reviews or result in undisclosed sponsorships in later content. Some brands have gotten more creative on presentation (ex: brands sending attractive models with a gift basket full of products to influencers' doors), but definitely just as wasteful as just a few years ago. I wonder if TikTokers will push back on these as well. I love that you gave the example of Urban Decay and how they are successfully listening to influencers and actively trying to reduce waste. I think since you are no longer on as many PR lists, you could try some smaller/indie brands that may not have the resources to send extravagant packages . It would be a great way to spread awareness of sustainable brands that don't get as much visibility! Anyway, I love your content and look forward to watching your videos while I get ready for work!

Good for her!!! Investing in your brand and its reputation as a trustworthy consumer reviewer and trusted baseline opinion in the MU review / info space is a brilliant decision. The trustworthiness, character being displayed, consciousness and overall image enhancement making Kelly stated opinion impenetrable by big brands and 💰 m is worth more than all the free MU she would ever receive. Plus, for those of us in this space as consumers; Kelly ability to deny free product & make this decision for herself, her brand, the 🌍 ♻️ and us shows a level of success and achievement that is WORKED for. I am someone who will make an effort to watch and like and share EVERY upload from a content creator I love when they make these type of decisions. Especially in a community where the largest creators are STILL clearly bought by brands. I really thought that would kind of die along with the last generation of MU KZbinrs fall off; but not so much. Good for you. I think too much PR doesn't just lead that product being wasted by the influencer testing it but to promoting over buying among watchers of videos. Having that much make up shouldn't be normalised - it goes off eventually (though I don't pay too much attention to expiry dates if the product seems fine). If you really want to collect things because they are beautiful it makes more sense to collect art, beautiful glass, painting etc doesn't go off and need to be thrown away. I know you and Hannah Louise Posten are friends and I have always loved her emphasis on finding new ways to love and use what you already own instead of always buying the next new thing and I enjoy your approach to curating your collection and keeping it under control. It just seems a much more healthy attitude to cultivate.

It is not the just the excessive packaging. I notice there is a crazy uptick in "reformulations" , which I suspect is done to lure us to buy more product. Got to get the newest and best! How many mascaras, foundations or powders can a regular person go through? I get that you (a professional in marketing beauty products) may need to hold on to a lot of product for reference even if it may not be your favorite but the volume of new companies, collections and reformulations has exploded with the invention of social media. I think this goes along with a slower consumption lifestyle which is great. Just like a no but encourages you to wait and see if you really want something, we don’t need to know everything about every product before it even comes out. I like a wait and see approach.

I, personally, don't like videos where ppl show SO MUCH PR. It’s uncomfortable to watch, not only is super wasteful but also they treat the products like nothing at times, when there are so many ppl who could never even afford them. I end up finding it disrespectful. I get they give it away to relatives and such, but at this point, you could even do weekly giveaways to your followers, lol. I also feel similarly about super duper declutter videos. Like, your decluttering 100 palettes? No, just no.

Love this idea! However, please make sure that you are sticking to it. I have seen some influencers who claims to take themselves off PR lists, and say they are becoming very "selective" of who can send PR to them, and to only show quality products to viewers. However, It ends up that it seems that they are receiving more PR products from companies, as the companies wants to show they are "worth" to be shown on the channel.

This conversation of "it's too much for me to use" reminded me of one time Manny MUA did a giveaway of makeup he coudln't use that he'd gotten in PR, and an indie brand got really mad because one of their products was in that giveaway. The brand was going on a rant on their ig stories about "does he know how much effort it takes to send those packages?!", and mentally I was thinking "do they know that he could recieve multiple packages per day, yet only has one face?". Tati once upon a time did PR unboxing videos, and it was shocking to see the hundreds of boxes she had to open, and I wouldn't be surprised if only a tenth of those made it through editing. And even less of those to her own face for testing. And just by how many products big influencers recieve, most of the time the most they can do is first impression videos, because there'a always new hyped up thing they need to try to bring the views in. Every brand wants a piece in the content pie, and if some influencers manage to funnel what they showcase by giving things they won't use away, others (like you) do so by not getting the things that might simply not get used at all.

I am a super small creator and just a beginner here on YT I have gotten some PR it’s a lot for me like 5 boxes a month and I feel like that is great! People trust me more . Eventually id like to work with bigger brands but curated as you say to my audience and my taste so my review is just more genuine.

Do you get PR from Pacifica or is that one of the brands you buy yourself? I just recently started trying their products and they are pretty great, but I was wondering if you were interested in testing out their new mascara (Activist Volume) that they launched? I got the vegan collagen mascara per your recommendation and I LOVE it 🥰 much lighter and less clumpy than the essence lash princess (green) which I had been using previously but wasn’t loving. I was hoping to see you compare the two Pacifica mascaras, but I completely respect you only wanting to test brands that you are interested in! I could imagine pr becoming overwhelming quite quickly. Love your content 💜

I guess everything is perspective. As a small creator who wants to grow and receives minimal PR, it's hard yo grow without receiving new releases. That being said, I agree with the excessive packaging.

I hate big packaging. I just recycle it anyway. I don’t keep any sleeves or anything so any time I make an order anywhere, after I open everything I have to stop at the recycling center because it won’t all fit in my can. I might be exaggerating a bit but it’s excessive.

Ok I’m not crazy. I was noticing Pr becoming larger and more wasteful. Especially when I seen recently an influencer receive a Pr package that was a dresser drawer and the drawers were filled with the latest launch. That took me aback. I did think companies were getting on board and being more conscientious. I should of known. I side eye everyone and everything now.

It’s not true that you have to be a big company to send out an email asking the KZbinr if they want to receive a product. There are companies like MailChimp that help businesses with email campaigns and analytics. Or you can do it with Excel. As long as the data is digital, it’s easy to reach out to your customers.

I think it's great that some companies ask if you want it. As one of the consumers paying for it through product purchases I don't like seeing the huge packages because they would never send it as a surprise or gift to non-influencers. It's a reminder that we aren't treated as important. I also don't want to see a bunch of stuff gifted to people who don't use it or give real reviews. How about these companies giving back to the "normal" consumer? That would be awesome! That being said, I keep pretty packaging or containers and make artwork out of them like Makeup by Cheryl.
