RVs offer so many benefits, but using them to attend events is one of the big ones. (Traveling with your own personal bathroom is the biggest benefit, but that's a separate video.) When we attend events in our RV, we get a front-row seat to the activities, plus a built-in place to hang out with friends and enjoy happy hour with other RVers. This year, we had the opportunity to host a dry camping event with the ​KYD Insiders​ at this year's Bug Jam, a massive VW show in Florida. We even got to drive a 1971 VW Bus! Car shows like this one are always fun to visit. Especially a show like Bug Jam, where the owners are so passionate about their build. It was also a treat to meet so many people within the KYD community who are into VWs. As with boats and RVs, it's easy to connect with people and talk about the nuances that make their Bug unique. Bug Jam also reminded us how much we love hosting events inside other events. Spoiler alert: we have other fun meet-ups in store for '24 ... Stay tuned!

My husband and I met when we were in our 40's at the beach. He was a surfer and I was a beach runner. I drove a 73 VW bug and he drove a VW bus. He lived near the beach and it didn't take long for him to convince me to move there with him. One of the funniest memories is his kids and mine would all crawl into his bus and before we could drive anywhere we would head down to the beach to do a "drive by". This was to see the waves and determine if after our shopping trip my Husband and the kids would grab their long boards and head out to surf. I stayed on the hill above the sand and had binoculars and we would have hand signals to let Hubby know if one of the kids appeared to be drowning and he would go rescue them. We have pictures of us and our cars all over the house. Those were such good times!

My first car at 16 was a tan 1976 VW Beetle. My grandmother loaned me the $2600 to get it. I paid her back over the next 2 5 to 3 years. Absolutely loved that car! So cool!

Ah brings back memories of college days in the early 70s in SLO (San Luis Obispo, CA) and my boyfriend who had a VW bus. We went to the beach often. My son has owned a vintage beetle since he was 15. He is 43 now and on his 4th vintage beetle. He attended this Jam a few years ago.

My uncle VW Beetles in the 70’s. His Bugs were covered in advertisements from Kool cigarettes. Kool used to pay Bug owners to advertise on their cars. Probably not PC today.

My first car was a 1960 VW bus that I bought for $300 in 1973, two-tone paint job, cream/ivory over burgundy. I was 19 and didn't know how to drive a stick shift, so my friend Irene did the test drive for me, told me it was OK, and then the next weekend drove it down to the beach parking lot and taught me how to drive a stick shift. I had recently read John Steinbeck's "Travels with Charlie" and loved his allegorical naming of his old pick-up Rocinante, alluding to Don Quixote's broken down nag of a horse of the same name that he rode backwards while tilting at windmills, thinking his horse a magnificent steed, and so I borrowed the idea and named my VW Rocinante, fondly shortened to Rosie or Rose. I had many adventures in Rosie before finally selling her in the fall of 1976 to help finance my move from SoCal to Washington State. I spent an unbelievably wonderful month on the road, hitch-hiking from SoCal to Washington, a hippie chick w/a backpack and her dog, crossing into Washington on October 1st, 1976. It was a year or more before I bought myself another car, but it was another VW, a little station wagon, pale blue, that I named Beulah, but that's another story...

We owned a 59 truck that had been converted to a cotton candy, popcorn, and Snow Cone truck for 6 years. It is currently at the Miracle of America Museum in Polson, Montana.

My Father was a carpenter and in the seventies his companie car was a VW pick-up. Like many other craftmans cars. As a little child I loved to drive with him in this VW. His private car was a Käfer (Beetle) 😁 👋🇩🇪

Oh my goodness what I would give to be able to have a camper. I don’t care if it’s a pop-up it’s been my lifelong dream at age 66 to be able to camp. I go with my brother sometimes but it’s his camper and he lives in Huntsville Alabama. And I live in East Tennessee so it’s about a 4 Hour and a half drive to get to Huntsville Alabama. Maybe I’ll win the lottery and buy a truck and a camper and hit the road.❤

Videos like this are so fun! VW's are so interesting and each has a story. My dad had 2 right hand drive VW's that he used on a rural mail route in Oklahoma for 10 or 15 years before he retired. They were so much fun - and he loved working on them. Thanks for the adventure!

When I visited my aunt and uncle in Woodburn, Oregon, they had a 1959 VW bug. My cousin and I would sit way in the back where there was a little cubby! Many memories there!!! Not like being strapped into a car seat! Hahaha! Love the van! I now have a 2022 VWAtlas R line! Not like the bug for sure, but I still love it!

I had a 63 bug one time. Both doors were sprung would not close. Did not have a gas gauge on it. Could not get 45 mph downhill tailwind in her truck pushing you. Could not keep oil in it. Never trust a friend to sell you a car!

A friend of mine had a 1982 VW Vanagon Westfalia....A nice size for the beginner camper...but not exactly quick in the acceleration department. Had a manual transmission and was kind of a guess to figure out what gear you are in.

OMG! I would have loved to go to that in my Bug. How much fun! Mine is 2006 so is approaching the 20-year mark very quickly. Part of me wants to rebuild her and part of me is questioning if Bug is worth investing probably $5K to bring her back to great. I am just guessing about the cost of rebuilding it. This looks like fun! Part of me likes the idea of the camper van, but I have to have my bathroom and a way to take a shower that isn't public. I was raised by a germaphobe! LMAO!

Any recommendations for an airstream that sleeps 6? We have 5 kids and travelled in a Suburban with a tip out trailer. We currently drive a Ram 1500 that will sit 6, uncomfortably, and tow a Shamrock 233s that will sleep 9 and weighs just over 5000 pounds. Sounds like you will need the 30’ bunkhouse to get everyone into an Airstream. Just be mindful of your payload capacity with that many people in the truck and the heavy tongue weight of a 30’ trailer. Safe travels.

Hey Trish, just a piece of advice about car show etiquette. Don't touch anything unless you have permission. Some people can get very upset about touching the paint, interior, etc. You never know if someone's ring or belt or clothing may scratch something. Loved the episode!
