Check out Reggae style music of today from artists like Fortunate youth, Pepper, Rebelution, Stick figure, Iration, Soja, Movement, Slightly stoopid, Tropidelic, Peter tosh...........of course Bob Marley's sons Ziggy Marley, Damien Marley. These artists will never get the mainstream attention due to the control of the music industry from the elites. A lot of songs are based around cannabis use, but in a loving and inspirational way

Bob survived an assassination attempt in 1976. He died in 1981 age 36 from a lesion under his right toenail which some say was cancer. The reggae beat is derived from the African drumb which is based on the human heart beat. Bobs music is based on rastafarianism and he emphasised Truth...as he saw it, Love, Righteousness, God, Peace and Unity of all humanity. This is why the whole world loved him and his songs

@smkvictory there's alot of THEORIES why he died, or what killed him. Truth is we'll never know the facts. One thing we definitely know is he was well loved and will never be forgotten

I'm glad you decided to explore Bob Marley's music. I'm 55 years old and in the 1980s when i was a teenager - my friends and I thought we were cooler than the other kids at school who were consuming the music on MTV and we were into underground music scenes like reggae. It's beautiful music with a beautiful message. I hope you continue exploring it. Bob Marley was kind of the Golden Boy of reggae - so if you're looking for something a little more seedy - a little more dirty - check out his old bandmate - Peter Tosh. He has the same cool factor as Marley but just a little bit different of a vibe. Thanks for your reactions - i'm enjoying them.

The lyrics to this song are almost literally derived from a speech made by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, before the United Nations General Assembly in 1963. Marley, along with fellow Rastafari, believe that Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia as either the second reincarnation of God or a human prophet who was sent directly by God. They often refer to him as “Ras Tafari,” which was his birth name, “Jah,” or “The Lion of Judah,” which Marley does in many of his songs. To him, Selassie was not only one of the most prominent African leaders of his time, he was also identified as God returning to earth as “King of Kings, Lord of Lords,” imperial titles born both by Selassie I and Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II before him. Haile Selassie I gave the “War” speech on October 4, 1963, calling for world peace at the 1963 U.N. Conference in New York City. This historical speech was spoken a few weeks after the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was founded in Ethiopian capital city Addis Ababa where Selassie chaired a summit meeting gathering almost every African head of state. For the first time in history, a head of state could therefore speak in the name of Africa with full legitimacy before the U.N. General Assembly. In the original speech, Selassie urged U.N. officials and country representatives to disarm nuclear weapons, and to end international exploitation (specifically with Africa).

Despite Rastafarians revering Haile Selassie, it is important to note that he was flattered by it, but never embraced their deification of him. He respected them and showed them love by giving them some land in Ethiopia called "Shashamane", which has a decent-sized Rastafarian/Jamaican population today.

Bob Marley died in 1981 after he was diagnosed w/ cancer after collapsing in 1980 in New York City while on tour... In 1977, he had injured his foot playing football ⚽and was diagnosed w/ malignant melanoma as a result and he was not treated properly for the symptoms. In 1980, he received a dire diagnosis - a rare form of skin cancer, acral lentiginous melanoma, had spread from his foot to the rest of his body... Normally, this disease did not afflict men of African descent, but Bob Marley was half-white... and it was more common among white, Caucasian men. Bob Marley sought cancer treatments and sadly, passed away in May 1981 at age 36, only months after playing his final concert in Pittsburgh in 1980.

My fave Marley songs are “One Love/People Get Ready” and “Redemption Song”. The first is a short but super-positive reggae tune. I’ve tried singing the second, which is acoustic, with limited success. But some fantastic singers have covered it very well. Bob was all about justice and change.

They speak about what more artists today should be talking about. Real issues. My goodness Princess, have you never heard reggae? Bob is the voice of the people, anti-war, hat e but for Love and "irie"..........he had an injury to his big toe from soccer playing that he didn't care for enough and it eventually developed into a cancer that spread. Tragic loss... He had a load of kids , but his sons and daughters created a band called ZIGGY MARLEY AND THE MELODY MAKERS... I actually saw them at Cynthia Wood Pavilion and they were on spot👍🏻 "THREE LITTLE BIRDS.... I SHOT THE SHERIFF are great songs, I shot the sheriff was later used by Eric Clapton, someone you'll eventually come across.... Clapton helped introduce Bob to broader American and International recognition when he covered that song.....Stay beautiful and have fun with your music journey....a lot of songs, some profound some goofy... Read the lyrics.... Fleetwood Mac with Stevie Nicks era may tickle your delight👍🏻😏

The words Bob Marley used in penning the song "War" were inspired by a speech that Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, who ruled from 1930 to 1974 gave at the United Nations General Assembly on October 4th, 1963. To the Rastafarian movement which began in Jamaica in the 1930's, a religion which Marley and most of his band members followed, Selassie is of central importance to the Rastas. Most of them believe Selassie to have been the "second coming of Jesus", and thus, until his death in 1975, God incarnate in human form.

Us we to listen to whole albums of him blazing. It's all a vibe. Can't tell when one song began and another ended. Or begun. This was music is more political. War times are real. Back then is it was all a cry for help through music. Why does the caged bird sing?. Why do chain gangs sing the blues. Why do?? .... It's all it can be done. Our spirits cannot be beaten down and taken. Contained and Rebelling. Even without a voice we can thrive.
