Stress will warp blades. So when you cut and grind knives with grinders and what not, that is creating stress in the steel. The steel also gets stressed when its made at the factory when its pressed into sheets. Some tips would be to lower the rpm and heat when working with the knives pre heat treatment (as well as after). Turn the rpm's down and or cut and grind them under water. You could also water jet. You can also do a de-stressing heat treat cycle. There is also something called vbr, which uses vibrations to remove residual stresses. The other part is to make sure the metal is heated evenly in the oven and quenched it so its evenly quenched. This is major cause the middle will cool slower than the outside. Any stress risers in the design will also cause stress and or issues. Say you have a 1 inch thick blade and mill out a relief for a fuller. This is now a 1 inch to half inch transition that will cause issues. After heat treatment grind under water fed belts to not ruin the heat treat and temper.

Normalizing the blade before quenching and temper fixes the knifes stress. You don't really need fancy water jet grinders either, just dunk the blade in a jug of water and cool it down when you start feeling it warming up.
@tacticalcenter8658 Жыл бұрын
@@JesusChrist_IsTruth-LoveForALL micro quenching is wrong and not a good practice. You dont want to warm it up on the grinder and quench it in water every time. That just ruins your temper. Normalizing doesnt resolve all the stress all the time.

@@tacticalcenter8658 it would ruin the temper even if your not going anywhere near the temperatures you tempered at? 🤔 Thanks for the tips

Awesome video! Definitely looking to make myself one of these. Was just wondering if there’s an easy way to tell when to pull it out of the oil? Or will 8-10 seconds be good for most steels and sizes?

Do you heat your oil up at all using a piece of scrap steel, or do you just go in cold on the first dip?
