The capacitor should run parallel with the L1 the flicker is coming from the fact that the switch is always running power through L1 even when it's off. the capacitor on L1 (only) is designed to minimize that electricity when the switch is off.

Hi mate. Thanks for the video. I'm a moron and am generally speaking pretty hopeless with this kind of stuff, the kind of moron to pay someone hard earned cash to get this kinda work done. Just installed my first switch and connected with Google Home without issue. Two more to do and at least something at home is gonna be smart, if not the residents 😂 thanks a million for breaking it down step by step, you saved me money and time, two valuable commodities which are hard to get in supply!

@@handymancraftglasgowI started with bulbs...top of the line LiFx ones. My bank balance still bears the scars. But because I too, am a moron, I kept turning them off at the (non-smart) light switch. My simple fix has been to tape over the switches in the "on" position, but it doesn't half confuse visitors! I'd really like to replace my switches with WiFi ones, but I've no idea where to start. Adding confusion is the fact that I have a Google Home speaker, and finding devices that will integrate with it AND the LiFx lightbulbs is...well...challenging to say the least! I'm also sure the voids behind my existing switches are considerably shallower than in your video, and certainly the model you showed would not fit. Are there slimline, Google enabled, no neutral smart switches out there?

As an electrician, you haven’t done a bad job as a “Diy-er”. I do agree that you should only tackle any electrical work if your qualified, especially a job like this as more tests would need to be carried out. Something that a “Diy-er” wouldn’t know about. That said, I’ve seen qualified electricians do worse!!

I believe the capacitor goes across the light terminals if you're having problems as it creates a "virtual neutral" to power the switch

@farmerbob339
@farmerbob339 2 жыл бұрын
Not really a "Virtual Neutral" but lets enough current travel through the "Load" lead to power the Switch but not activate the bulb. A "Leak". I had this decades ago on a Door Bell that had a keyboard and you could "play in" whatever you wanted the unit to play when activated.

Do you know if it’s possible for the LED in the power symbol on the switch face itself to be shut off unless it’s flashing for a problem? Through use of the app perhaps? Seems a bit pointless for an LED to run when lights are on and would perhaps be a little annoying in a dark room with an LED lit up on the wall
@handymancraftglasgow
@handymancraftglasgow 4 жыл бұрын
In this particular light switch it is possible to switch off the network indicator. The network indicator is a blue light that shows when the light is off. The switch will still be lit orange when the light is on. This is possible with the eWeLink app. Not possible in the smart life app. If there is a problem with the network and you have the indicator off you won't be able to tell by looking at the switch. I was worried about this before I fitted them but the indicator light is so low you hardly notice it. The indicator can actually be useful for finding the switch in the dark. If I was fitting in a bedroom I would choose an ewelink one so the indicator can be switched off. Hope this helps 👍

⚠️ Hi! Great video. I just installed the smart switch in my bedroom, which has a twin switch connection, so 2 switches operate the same lights. I replaced the dumb switch with the simpler connection by adding the common to the Neutral whole and L1 & L2 to L and L1 in the smart. The issue is that the other dumb switch doesn’t operate the lights anymore. Any ideas why? Maybe because I connected the N to the common?...

You can't use these as a two way switch. I tried to get my hall lights to work but not possible.
@venimus777
@venimus777 Жыл бұрын
You can't use 2-way switch but there is a solution for that. There are RF switches with the same design that are battery operated and you pair them to the main switch. You don't use the wiring for the second switch. So basically that switch acts as a remote control. That of course requires the main switch to have the RF option (most do).

If you have a neutral wire at the switch then use a smart switch that requires a neutral. If you only have live wires then a no neutral switch is required. The capacitor allows the switch to draw a bit of power it needs to run. I don't know what audiophile is in this context. 👍

@handymancraftglasgow
@handymancraftglasgow 3 жыл бұрын
You need to make sure that the new LED bulbs are dimable. If they are able to work with a dimmer you usually need a dimmer specifically for LEDs. The Leds use way less power than the halogens. If your dimmer was flickering before you changes over to the LEDs its probably worth changing the dimmer switch. Calculate the total load of the lights and make sure the dimmer can handle the load. So, if you have 12 leds at 5W each you will be using a total of 60W - probably just over the power of 1 halogen bulb. Led dimmers are usually made to deal with lower loads. Hope this helps

If you know for sure that all your wiring is modern and 'up to code' then switching off just your up lights or down lights breaker would be fine. If it's an older house then you can't tell what might have been going on so worth killing all the power. eg: In my daughter's old flat half of the kitchen sockets stayed on when the main fuse was off. Turned out there was a separate supply for the cooker and certain sockets.

You can set up themes within the apps so that when one switch is pressed it sends a signal to another switch. This does rely on the internet being live.

@garrymackenzie309
@garrymackenzie309 4 жыл бұрын
If it has no other wires and just the two wires in common and L1/L2 then one is the live feed to the switch and would normally be in the common terminal and the other is the live return to the lamp (either in L1 or L2). The live return is sometimes not actually a red wire but a black or blue wire with a red sleeve on it - so this is your L2. The proper red wire is your common. If they are both proper red wires then get a cheap electrical tester like this: www.screwfix.com/p/roughneck-electrical-mains-tester-screwdriver-100-250v-ac-slotted-3-5mm-x-130mm/8606x You can use this to test which is the actual live - just leave you mains on and test which wire gives a live indicator. Lol, you do this at your own risk of course.

What would the implications be of using earth as a neutral on the switches that require neutral?
@handymancraftglasgow
@handymancraftglasgow 5 жыл бұрын
Don't do it. There will be safety implications. The earth is there for a reason and is deliberately wired to ground and does not carry a voltage. Putting a voltage down it could cause difficulties with your breakers or you may cause a part of your electrical circuit to become live that shouldn't. All metal in your house like your plumbing is bonded to earth and any metal switches, lamps, appliances are all earthed. Putting a voltage on there could have unforeseen and dangerous consequences. I would certainly not take the risk.

Hi It's one of these capacitors, but not the exact type. You need to find one with insulated legs. It is the exact spec of capacitor just without leg insulation, a place to start. so you may have to hunt a bit for the insulated leg type. Don't try and use one without insulated legs, you could cause your light fitting to go live or cause a fire. www.ebay.co.uk/i/283186542120?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=283186542120&targetid=910255718549&device=m&mktype=pla&googleloc=9046944&poi=&campaignid=9441122850&mkgroupid=96109442536&rlsatarget=aud-629407026465:pla-910255718549&abcId=1140496&merchantid=113592178&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwr32BRD4ARIsAAJNf_014m7DauU652wUhCN4c6FlvWUZUEJeZc9bFxuEOu4FRViFW8wgMqwaAhK_EALw_wcB
