Yeah its hard to justify replacing the blower and resistor box if its still working but no actual diagnosis can be made without committing to hours of labor charges. With the financial climate being what it is money is tight. And its possible it was a one time issue, something jammed the motor and it freed itself and its fine now. Or it has a burnt contact on the commutator. Who knows really? And the money in labor it would take to pull the blower out and confirm the issue is not going to be cheap, and at that point you are in for a penny might as well go for the pound.

I wish I could convince all my customers silicone isn't necessary with a properly installed gasket but these parking lot part swappers who call themselves mechanics that they use always want to slather it on everything to cover their sloppy work, it's frustrating. Good on you for doing things the right way.
@OrbObserver2 жыл бұрын
@Peter Angles Which is why I put the caveat "with a properly installed gasket" but you have no idea the number of people asking for silicone for things like valve covers it's nuts.
@joevignolor4u9492 жыл бұрын
Using sealant was the norm back a long time ago but these newer gaskets don't require any. The gasket manufacturers even specifically tell you not to use any sealant so I never do. However, many of these newer designed gaskets are touted as being "reusable" and some people do reuse the old gaskets just to save a few bucks. I think that's risky and not a good idea. I always use brand new gaskets, especially if they are buried down deep somewhere and I don't want to risk having to go down in there again.
@OrbObserver2 жыл бұрын
@@joevignolor4u949 Trust me, I know about older people wanting to stick to knowledge that became irrelevant 20 years ago. I have guys still putting 20w-50 in their 2016 trucks because to them thicker=better, their poor oil pumps are suffering.
@joevignolor4u9492 жыл бұрын
@@OrbObserverPutting heavier oil in a modern engine will damage the top piston rings and a special coating they put on the sides of modern pistons. These modern engines have much tighter piston to side wall clearances than older engines did. This is done to eliminate that wide open gap above the top piston rings that existed between the piston tops and the cylinder walls in older engines. Fuel/air mixture used to hide in that gap and did not burn, which reduced fuel economy and increased emissions. To prevent this problem the space between the pistons and the cylinder walls was reduced and a special coating was put on the sides of the pistons to make them fit tighter in the cylinders. This is why modern engines require thinner oil. It's necessary to allow oil to penetrate past the tight clearances up to the upper piston rings. If you put heavier oil in a modern engine the top piston rings will run dry and wear out. This will increase oil consumption, which will get people to put in even heavier oil, which will only make the problem worse. I've seen low mileage engines get totally ruined by people putting in oil that was heavier than the manufacturer specified.

@joevignolor4u9492 жыл бұрын
You'd be surprised how many people take those filters out and don't replace them. They think they are unnecessary and not worth the money to replace them. The problem is that foreign material can get into the system from outside and interfere with the blower or plug up the heater core or the evaporator. Having to dig into the heater/AC systems just to remove leaves, dust, dirt and acorn shells can be very expensive.
@jimharmon34042 жыл бұрын
Ray, consider that DC motors will not make a buzzing sound unless there is a "baseball card in the spokes". I think you should locate the relay as they will buzz in just the right conditions. Check the contacts as you did with the motor plug etc. If that relay lives near the driver I would check/swap or replace it first since it is much cheaper and an easy replacement. In any case let us know how it turns out.

Buzzing is usually caused by something like a leaf encountering the blade hence buzzing . This can possibly slow it down to where the internal thermo coupler overheats and shuts down the fan motor. After it cools it restarts and could have blown the leaf or debris to another quiet place. This is speculation. The restriction (buzz) may come back or forever hold its peace.

*THIS* is the difference between RTV "gasket maker" and a product called *"Gasket Dressing"* (Permatex). Dressing is natural rubber and Isopropyl alcohol. It makes regular, paper gaskets seal better, hold up to chemicals better. With an application like this, however, the proper gasket already has a built in silicone bead, engineered to seal properly. No need for anything extra. Good call, Ray!

A correctly fitted N95+ mask does stop even the small particles both ways (not the vented ones). But to your point they are supposed to be disposed of after a certain amount of use too.

I would check the cabin air filter first thing. Seen filters so dirty and clogged it caused the blower motor to overheat.

Somewhere around that motor blower inside the ducts there is black foam that disintegrates over the years and ends up in the fan causing strange noises, if it disengages itself then it flies out through the air vents, otherwise it continues to do noise. If I remember correctly, just unscrew one or two screws, turn the motor blower 45 degrees and it comes out so you can clean the fan from the stuck foam.

My 2000 Accord had clogged cabin air filters. It took about an hour to replace, however, it was worth it, it was full of leaves.

I'm having a similar issue with my 05 Nissan Sentra blower motor, the fan runs on level 4 but levels 1-3. It has a separate blower resistor which makes testing easier but current mechanic suggestion is replace both if faults exist because if one unit is failing, the other likely isn't too far behind. Fortunately these parts for this Nissan aren't break-the-bank expensive

Had the same issue on my dad's van. Replaced the resistor only. Everything worked just fine after that.

Another vote for the resistor only. I had an Explorer that went through a couple of them and the fan was still working fine.

Just went through the same blower issue on my jeep renegade. Could not find a definite cause. Out of pure defiance, I pulled the whole fuse box. Turned out to be an intermittent short on a wire going into the relay.. easy fix.

I had a 1980 Ford Fiesta with a manual transmission, it was made in Europe, by Opal, I think. I sold it at 235,000 miles still running perfectly.

You and your brake cleaner, Ray! I prefer CRC BrakeKleen though. I do sometimes use Kopper Koat along with the gasket, as it's designed to help the gasket to seal.
