I wanted to say thanks for what you do for the VR community. Life as a VR content creator that gives in depth benchmarks, and actual helpful information is rough. Most videos lack substance or are repetitive from one creator to the next. It’s always refreshing stopping by your channel, even when it relates to hardware that may not be in high demand. Nobody else out there is giving recent AMD VR benchmarks on mid tier GPUs, and this video alone will be much more helpful to people than another mindless entertainment video from one of the bigger VR names. I really appreciate your videos, and understand the time, money and effort you put into them are much more than what you will ever get in return. So thank you. Thank you for being passionate and giving folks helpful and entertaining VR content. It’s a rare breed that doesn’t get enough praise. Cheers!

I always appreciate you making these videos! You expose AMD's lackluster drivers for VR and their problems, which consequently brings attention to them and that ultimately benefits us all. AMD has improved their drivers for VR quite a lot since the release of the 7000 series, and I really believe you had a hand in that with your reviews, at least you're putting pressure on 'em 🔥🔥 to fix their stuff. You might not get hundreds of thousands of views with these videos as AMD for VR is a niche within a niche, but within this niche your videos are number #1. And I know someone at AMD has to be watching 👀 if not I will kindly forward the video to their PR department at Radeon Group.

Glad you're back posting GPU tests for VR you're the best source of information i've found! I made the decision to buy the 7800xt based on your videos and it plays all my VR games pretty well apart from the odd stuttering from time to time. I'm not sure when you made this video but recently Meta have updated their oculus application and now it supports 120hz on Quest 3! Thanks so much for the comment. I hope the title and thumbnail didn't come off as me asking if people care about my videos? I meant does anyone care about the VR Performance of the 7700XT? I do see how it could be misinterpreted though. The point of titles and thumbnails is of course to draw in people who may be interested in the information in the video and I just know the 7700XT isn't at the top of the heap when it comes to GPU's people are buying or own, so those looking at it for VR is even more of a niche group, so that's all I mean by it. 😅

Your reviews are some of the only ones that look at hardware performance in VR and have any depth. Much appreciated. VR is the most demanding use I have for my video card (despite also getting a 4K monitor recently), and the majority of gaming I do. I switched back to Nvidia a couple of weeks ago, due to my experience with Quest 2, Quest 3 and an RX 6600 XT (in comparison to having a GTX 1660 Ti before that). Very happy with the upgrade to a 4070 Ti Super (aside from the price). Performance and compatibility are excellent. It's a shame that AMD doesn't prioritise VR, and that VR game developers and headset manufacturers don't prioritise AMD. I guess that's just the economics of VR being a minority market in gaming and AMD being a minority of the video card install base. Nvidia's RTX and DLSS features aren't yet seeing much support in VR titles (although there's a few excellent exceptions, like No Man's Sky and of course using the UEVR mod), and locally the 7900 XT was about 13% cheaper than my 4070 Ti Super, despite offering about 3-4% better rasterisation performance, so if not for AMD's questionable compatibility and support, the value would be there. I also prefer AMD's driver software in terms of UI/UX, although Nvidia's finally decided to pull their socks up in this regards a couple of days ago. Fact is that my experience with the RX 6600 XT and VR means that to get me to try another AMD card they would need a lot better than a 13% price reduction and 4% improved rasterisation performance. Nor is it any better stepping down to the RX 7800 XT and 4070 Super, where the 4070 Super had about a 7-8% performance advantage and commanded a 21% higher price (although the potential VRAM advantage of 16 vs 12 is more relevant than 20 vs 16). Hard to see this changing unless Nvidia completely drops their bundle.
@AJ-po6up9 ай бұрын
I also experience this hitching in some games with my 7900XTX, the February drivers should be coming soon so let's hope they fix it, as this problem is happening even in flat games, (maybe problems with the shader cache?) sadly AMD treats VR as a low priority so it might get fixed for flat but not VR, hopefully they prove me wrong this time lol. The January drivers are not amazing, they were definitely rushed to finally get FS3/AFMF officially out.

New to your channel, and appreciate all the AMD related content!! Hoping to get a sanity check, I recently upgraded to a 7600XT from a RTX 2060 (going back to team red after being team green for a while) and I got the XT variant for the additional RAM headroom for modern games and VR. That said, running Half life: Alyx, I get the low gpu RAM warning on start up, at about 6/16 gb used, and at portions of my gameplay I am maxxing out 16GB on my Vram. This just doesnt make sense to me. System specs: Ryzen 7 3700 PRO (same as a 3700x) 16GB DDR4 3200mhz RAM M.2 NVME RX 7600XT Oculus quest 1 (the original black one) Oculus link smart cable (tests from 1.4-1.7, sometimes up to 2.1...) Launching Quest link, then Steam VR in order to play Alyx (only way it seems to work with quest 1...) The game seems to run fine, high fidelity, with 1x resolution settings. Things look great, with occassional stutters, "hitching" Also on the latest Radeon drivers and reinstalled oculus app and steam VR to ensure latest versions. Oculus app states system does not meet minimum requirements (???)... Any thoughts as to why all the oddities, am I doing anything terrible wrong? Signed -broke dad just trying to get off my butt and VR
@Maraksot787 ай бұрын
That all sounds completely normal. The "your system doesn't meet the minimum requirements" banner in the Oculus PC app is totally normal. It seems Meta hasn't updated their software to recognize many newer GPU's for quite some time. I've been seeing that with new high-end hardware for at least the last year. That message is shown even when your system far surpasses the minimum requirements. Maybe someday Meta will update whatever hardware library the app is referencing to include all the new hardware that's come out over the past 2 years. Also, Half Life Alyx maxing out VRAM is also totally normal. That's how Valve programmed the game. It'll use however much VRAM you have. I've played it on 8GB cards, it utilizes all 8GB and the game looks and runs great. I've played it on 24GB cards, it utilizes all 24GB and the game looks and runs great. I think it's just caching as much data to the VRAM as it has VRAM available to it so it can quickly retrieve that data as it's needed rather than having to go back to the storage and load it in to the VRAM again. And that low VRAM warning in Alyx, I'm not sure what that's all about. I get that same warning with cards like the 7900XTX that has 24GB of VRAM, so like Meta's app saying your hardware doesn't meet the minimum specifications I think it's just a bug in the game, but nothing to be concerned with.

Same hitching problem here. I bought 7900XT for 750€ because 4080 pricing was way too high then (1300€) and ended up with these hitches on Reverb G2 and Q3. Using older radeon drivers odly solved the problem in some games, but introduced bad stutters and some broken geometry anomalies in other titles I like to play (SpaceEngine, Elite dangerous, MSFS 2020). I don't wanna wait for radeon devs to fix these problems as RDNA 3 should be matured arch by now. Hell we're getting RDNA4 next year. So I sold 7900XT at a 150€ loss and got 4070S for the remaining money. I hate ngreedia's market practices, but in the end there is nothing we can do as a consumers when AMD is not good enough or just doesn't care about VR users.

I haven't used my Quest 3 for PC VR in a couple days I'll have to check that. @@Maraksot78 With 24.1.1 AMD's HYPR-RX feature turns on some driver features for specific games, sometimes anti-lag or AFMF will be enabled automatically unless the HYPR-RX profile is changed/disabled (At least that's how I think it works still). I've also seen the same hitching while trying to record my VR gameplay, you could be experiencing the same thing. I had it quite a bit on OBS.
@Maraksot789 ай бұрын
Just double checked the settings in the Radeon control center or whatever it's called... (AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition) and Hyper-RX, Super Resolution, Fluid Motion Frames, Anti-Lag and all those other settings are disabled like I thought they were, so it doesn't look like any of that is the cause of the hitching. I recorded everything directly to the Quest 2 and didn't use OBS or other screen recording software. I record that way so I can capture the ODT performance overlay. You can record it using Oculus Mirror too, but I've found Oculus Mirror uses enough system resources that it effects GPU performance giving me worse results than a GPU is capable of when Oculus Mirror isn't running. Recording directly to the headset gives me the same performance as when I'm playing without recording which is why I do it that way, and usually everything runs fine. I appreciate you reaching out and helping me troubleshoot this though. VR performance has come a long way on Radeon 7000 GPU's since they first launched and they're performing really good now overall. If that hitching problem wasn't there, then I wouldn't have any complaints for sure.

Dont understand values of "performance headroom": good is high percentage or good is low percentage? Thanks
@Maraksot783 ай бұрын
Performance headroom just means how much system resources are still available for running a game. The more detailed/demanding a game is to run the more calculations your CPU and GPU have to perform to run the game. Since your CPU and GPU can only do so many calculations per second, some games will max out your systems capabilities while others will not. I use the performance headroom graph to help me decide how much to push the settings of a game while still getting a desired frame rate. When there's lots of headroom available I'll turn different game settings up to improve the visual quality until I reach a point I'm either happy with the quality and framerate I'm getting or have reached the best settings I can achieve without adversely effecting the framerate. Depending on the CPU and GPU you're using you can crank the settings all the way up in a game like Beat Saber and there's still performance headroom available. That means your CPU and GPU have no problem running that particular game. Other games like MS Flight Simulator are much more resource intensive so many GPU's I've tested will run out of performance headroom even when the settings are quite low which then adversely effects the framerate. I hope that makes sense and helps.

I bought a 6750xt, it was awesome for flat gaming, but complete stuttering mess with vr, I had to use my backup gtx 1080 when playing vr, I ending up selling the 6750xt and buying a rtx 3060ti, the 3060ti works as it should, and actually destroyed the 6750xt in VR benchmarks...conclusion it must be AMD crappy VR drivers. smh @ AMD.

I'm skipping this gen. Perhaps the next generation will tempt me.

AMD's drivers causing problems? OH NO WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED!? reason #1 why I swapped my AMD 6900xt for a 4090 in my main rig... VR is just better with Nvidia, SOOOOOOOO many less issues. For 2d? yea, AMD wins in the budget arena. I still run my 6900xt in my backup desktop (basically my sons desktop now) If you want 120hz on the Q3, there are options. You want a game that will challenge VR? DCS will eat that shit *alive* As for the hitching/frame drops, Can you test something? VSYNC and FRAME LOCKs, set vsync ON in both game and in control panel, not vsync fast or enhanced, no ultra low latency, none of that nonsense just basic bitch vsync -- just straight good ole vsync, and *if* the game has a frame limiter, try turning that on and setting it to match your set refresh rate. I'd be curious what you results would be.

I got a 7900xtx and with the drivers after 23.7.1 I get weird double image ghosting on all ground objects and air objects….i believe amd did something and messed up the drivers
@Munky3328 ай бұрын
@@Horner219 Pretty standard for AMD tbh. I say it again, AMD for 2d is fine. They just fucking suck balls at VR, and their encoder is trash compared to NVENC. I moved away from my 6900xt to a 4090. I just couldn't be bothered with all the driver and gaslighting nonsense from "drivers are fine dude" or "FSR is just as guud"

Thanks for the information and your honest opinion…..I will buy nvidia for vr from now on

Well, I figured out what the ghosting graphics on dcs was all about….my resolution on quest 3 at 90 htz at 1.3 scaling was too much for 7900xtx to handle….switched to 1.0x at 90htz on oculus app…..now runs fine…..driver 2.7.1 still works better than 24.2.1 …I find the fps drops below 90 fps native on driver 24.2.1….it switches to 45 fps…and then crap ghosting happens….but switching to 23.7.1 driver….it never drops below 90fps native…..and I don’t use any fsr or reprojection ever….just thought you may want to know

@@Horner219 1.0x is pretty shit res though. You should drop to 72hz and go higher res. Also consider fixed foveated rendering.
