So I ran that card about three and a half years. Not a super long life, but considering I spend $420 on it when the 2070 non super was going for $500 and up, I think I did alright. I also did just enough mining to pay for the card and cover my power bill in the winter. @@TheUltraMinebox Exactly why I upgrade to a 7900gre when my 5700XT bit the dust a few weeks back. *technically* it's like 30% more expensive than what I paid for the 5700XT back in 2019, but that 30% price hike is still lower than that of my grocery list compared to back then as well. A 7800XT or 7900GRE are now well worth the upgrade, *if* you need it. I would have kept my 5700XT for a while yet, as FSR got "good enough" to be worth the visual hit, and I was perfectly fine with getting 80-100FPS in most non-competitive games, or even around 60 if they didn't require any rapid inputs. Hopefully I can get 5 years out of the 7900GRE. We'll see if it gets the same performance bump with time that the 5700XT got since launch.
@vigilant_19346 ай бұрын
It's not stagnation. The 7700XT is a proper uplift over the 6700XT with 54 CUs vs. 40CUs. The 6700XT is a bit better than the 5700XT with the same amount of CUs but the biggest difference is the extra VRAM (12GB vs 8GB). You can't expect a 100% performance increase until 3 generations later. Tim did a whole video on GPUs and price to performance and what average consumers expect before upgrading. 30% increase after 1 gen, 50% increase after 2 gens and 100% price to performance increase after 3 generations and this was based on Hardware Unboxed polls. The 7700XT gives you over 60% improvement in 2 generations which is great at the midrange where performance isn't pushed as hard the high end. Either way, it's only 4.5 years since the 5700XT was released and RDNA 4 isn't out yet. Around the 5 year mark we should have an 8700XT that gives you that double performance. The 5700XT was never really supposed to be $400 (I think AMD was gonna make it $499 until Nvidia announced the Super series with lower prices) and I'm not 100% sure how much the assumed 8700XT will cost but I still expect it to be $450-$500. If it has the performance increase and 16GB of VRAM I might get it to upgrade my placeholder 6700XT. If it is the top die for RDNA 4 (which is rumored to be similar to RDNA 1 meaning no high end GPUs) than it might have an even bigger performance increase if AMD hits their targets.

So you were only benchmarking these old/cross gen games and just "in game testing" the new ones? I'm sorry but what's the point of that? I was expecting a benchmark of Avatar, Ratchet, Horizon, Alan Wake 2, Immortals etc in a benchmark list. Those are by far the most interesting because some of them use Raytracing by default or DX12 Ultimate features like Mesh Shading. Why did you not put them in the benchmark list and just gave these games "in game testing"? I wanted to see how the 5700XT performs relative compared to the newer GPUs and the Turing GPUs there which should be the entire point of the video. A bit disappointed to be honest.

That isn't true at all. Whether something is a fully-enabled chip or not doesn't dictate its place in the product stack. A 4060 Ti uses a fully-enabled GPU, whereas the 3060 Ti didn't, yet that doesn't make it the successor to the 3070 Ti (which did). A fairer way to look at things is die size, ROPs and CUs, and the 5700 XT only has 64 ROPs and 40 CUs on a 251mm2 die, versus the 96 ROPs and 54 CUs of the 7700 XT and its 346mm2 die. They're simply not in the same class, despite the product naming. The 7600 XT would be closest to a 5700 XT in the current stack, since it also has 64 ROPs, although only 32CUs on a 204mm2 die. It's also a fully-enabled Navi 33 chip, so would meet your criteria too, though the reality is that the 5700 XT doesn't quite match anything in the current stack because there's no 40 CU equivalent. RDNA 1 was a weird generation where AMD abandoned the high end entirely, so it doesn't mesh well with the RDNA 3 stack that competes all the way up to the 4080 (Super).

@@CaptainKenway The 4060Ti(188mm^2) is the successor to the rtx 3050(198mm^2 cut down from 276mm^2). Hell you could say it's the successor to the RTX 3050 6GB which is 200mm^2. The RX 5700 XT has 251mm^2 die size as a monolith on 7nm, but the RX 7800 XT has 200mm^2 die size on 5nm at 151 Million transistors per mm^2, while the cache 4x 36mm^2 is at 50 Mt/mm^2 on 6nm, if it was all on 5nm it would be 4x 12mm^2 = 48mm^2 + 200mm^2 = 248mm^2. @@rattlehead999 You know just enough to argue a solid case for a wrong conclusion :P Navi1 is on the last DUV node, which made the wafer cost manageable. EUV is expensive, and that has translated to such elevated wafer prices that the per-transistor cost went UP despite it being a full 70% density shrink for 5nm. It's not until 4nm that the transistor count reached parity with 7nm. So expecting to get the same die size for the same money, with a wafer cost increase and an inflation spike, pretty much translates to saying "I expect AMD to be a charity and not a company".

Sure it would have been better if he held on a bit longer for a 7700XT, but he was having a lot of thermal throttling issues. These ended up being mostly due to the poor thing being full of dust and dog hair. The initial driver issues and blue screen problems are long forgotten which is a great thing for those Arc buyers who have had to recently endure the same dramas. Stay the course and it should be resolved, guys. Suffice to say the new card and the extra 4gb of ram is a great help at 1440.

Just had to upgrade to the 7900GRE a few weeks ago because my 5700XT started crashing my system. If that wasn't the case, I'd still happily be rocking that Navi beast. Just as it was starting to struggle with getting satisfying framerates in newer titles at 1440p, FSR got "good enough" to be well worth the occasional hit to visuals for the boost in smoothness. This may be a bit anectodal, but I kept my previous graphics card for the same 5 years as the 5700XT. It's predecessor was a GTX770, and I can wholeheartedly say that my sentiment towards that card at the end of it's "lifespan" was not nearly as positive. Comparing that to it's AMD counterparts from the time led me to choosing the 5700XT for that "Ages like fine wine" AMD driver evolution, and it turned out to be true. The 5700XT now punches a step above it's weight class at launch, firmly keeping up and surpassing the RTX2070, when at launch it was closer to a 2060. That same though process is what got me to buy the 7900GRE. That, and the fact that it's the most compelling price/performance-wise.

Still rocking that 57xt you're presenting in this video. If I knew it was the golden shit during the mining boom then I defo would have sold it for that upgrade. Problem with that being that I got laid off and without a means of securing cashflow and the ongoing gpu shortage, I didn't want to risk ending up cardless at the time. Somewhat kicking myself as I'll likely be selling it for under $150 (purchased for $380 used w/ box+accessories) by the time I hit my 5 year upgrade cycle next year compared to maybe $250 for a 67xt. Getting my build finished only a couple months before lockdown felt absolutely clutch back then. Now it's looking like I'll upgrade to either the 77/78xt (78 mainly for the 16gb vram), although considering I'm looking into AI creation I'm thinking about biting the bullet and paying the yucky green tax and picking up the 4060 (16gb) or seeing what the 4070 looks like since I'm hoping by then the 5 series will have started putting some downward pressure by then. Then there's also the power savings which will always be appreciated alongside the additional features and stuff. We'll see, got another year and my 57xt has been great to me. A great upgrade off the 390x 8gb I got in 2015. Thanks for helping with the upgrade decision, though maybe we could revisit this again come next year and see how things really compare? :P
