The biggest modeling project was taking an AURORA 1/48 B-25 and converting it into a B-25H with a solid Nose with the 75mm field gun mounted in the left lower quadrant of the nose. It also required that the cockpit be scratch built as well as the landing gear wells. I also had to sand off the molded in insignia from the wings, fuselage, & tail. I took the easy way out and installed a cockpit interia from a REVELL Doolittle Raider B-25C. But since you couldn't see much of the interior it was sufficient. I made this kit in 1974, so there is a lot I may have forgotten, but I do remember replacing the molded in fuselage gun barrels below the canopy, with some brass tubing to make it seem more legit. I also sanded off the molded in guns from the waist positions and added a couple of Machine Guns from my spare parts box to add to the realism. This was a beast. The nose was carved from a piece of balsa wood and a .58 caliber Minnie Ball was epoxied in a hole drilled into the back of the balsa nose for the counter weight to keep the nose down when sitting on display. I do wish I had pictures of that kit, but that was a long time ago.

Thats a brilliant build and great history and commentary. It is refreshing to see someone doing a project like this rather than just kit bashing. My biggest build was making a 1/12th scale 57 Chevy gasser drag racer from a Revel kit I picked up at a flea market. The stock wheels were missing but I got wider slicks and engine parts over about a year. It involved making raised suspension and a new chassis and roll cage etc. I think it is way more satisfying than just assembling the kits.

My largest modelling project wasn’t a single model, it was a collection of 1/72 models of the same aircraft in its various marks, the Spitfire/Seafire, I had to give up after completing around 24 models, with no two the same, because I hadn’t realised just how many variations there was of this aircraft. To make matters more difficult I was doing this in the early ‘90s when there weren’t really that many good 1/72 Spitfire kits on the market so the project involved a lot of kit bashing, cross kitting and using after market resin parts.

Dang. That’s a super crazy wing folding sequence. Why they didn’t just move the hinges a little further out, then they wouldn’t have had to fold the tips also. That’s one heck of a Frankenstein job there. Well done. Bring cast iron or fabricated from steel, WWII aircraft exhaust most certainly rusted. Just to what extent depends on the AO, duration in service, and actual flight/running hours and of course the construction method of the exhaust.

I admire your filling skills, as I just tacked on an Airfix MK 14 nose on a Mk VIII Eduard (which allows making one of 8 prototypes Mk XIV, the third and last one with a standard Mk VIII tail, JF 318, which dispenses with changing the tail), and it was extremely hard, even with just the forward edge of the wing fairing being a curved mating surface... It took years, even at this simpler level...
@TheModelGuy2 жыл бұрын
Filling has been something I’ve been trying to get better at since this project. I had a problem with putty not staying in place and ghost seams. Sprue goo was a huge game changer and fills in very nice. It’s also a reason I steer clear of airfix because I know there is going to be a lot of filling. I also found the two kits needed to revisit this so at some point I’ll have to suck it up again :)

Oh! Seafire Mk.XV !! Of the Spitfires and Seafires, I think it's the most well-proportioned, sleek and powerful model. I can understand why you wanted to make this model. Among them, I like the early model of Mk.XV, which has a small ladder area. I believe this 1/72 model is available from the Sword. By the way, although it's a small thing, I think it's a pity that the bulletproof glass on the front of the windshield is not the built in type and the elevator horn-balance is not the large area type.
