In contrast, my wife has a 2017 Kia Sportage. Bought new. $29K OUT THE DOOR. No issues. Leather seats, heated everything…my only complaint is the lousy mpg’s for a small 4 cylinder and the road noise. I think the road noise is because of the cheap tires used. But as a simple daily driver, she’s happy. And it didn’t break the bank. We will probably get rid of it at 100, 000 miles. But keep up with maintenance and it’s a fine inexpensive vehicle IMO.

Scotty isn't saying 10 out of 10 Hyundais will break down. It's a fact that Hyundais break down more often than a Toyota and just because you have owned a good Hyundai, it doesn't mean others would too. but at the same time, just because 9 Toyotas didn't break down, your 1st Toyota might.

My friend got a pre-owned 2016 Hyundai Santa-Fe back in 2020 for ~$9000. Not even a month of owning it, there’s something wrong with the engine so she took it to the dealership. They end up replacing the engine, but since it’s a manufacturer error, it can be replaced with no cost. I’m just happy that nothing bad happened to her, but she has successfully convinced me not to get a used Kia/Hyundai despite of more affordable prices…

My family and I have owned multiple Hyundai/Kia vehicles, starting with the Tucson in 2005 (which we still have and is still running strong). We have a 2005 Tucson, 2013 Kia Soul, 2018 Kia Rio, 2018 Kia Sportage(recently traded in for a 2023 Sportage) and a 2021 Kia Sportage between us all. They were taken for all required recalls and given routine maintenance and oil changes. There were never any problems other than routine maintenance requirements for any car (new tires, brakes, etc). Either we're the luckiest family in America or a lot of people don't know how to take care of their cars and blame it on the company.

My dad bought 2006 Sonata with 2.2 CRDI few years back for backup vehicle for 1000 eur. 465 thousand km in odo. Thus far only problems has been to replace injector seal rings (which is very simple and cheap fix, but can cause bigger isfues, you should do it if you haven't in these diesel engines), fuel gauge has electronic issue so it doesn't work, and had to replace rusted fuel line in the back. It's solid car I'd say. Much better to drive than my wifes 2012 Toyota Avensis with half that in odo and 10x more expensive in used market. Literally described EVERY car ever made. There is no perfect car out there. Every car has problems. Poorly maintained or not. Poorly made/assembled or not. Import or Domestic. EVERY car will experience an issue at some point and it will cost you. It's inevitable. Stop trying to scare people from specific car brands. If the car fits their specific circumstances in life than it is what it is. And for all the people who think I am just Hyundai or Kia owner that is offended. You would deemed incorrect. I don't own a Hyundai or Kia. I own a vehicle that fit my circumstances in my life. In which I don't owe the responsibility to anyone to tell what I own.

For a car that is so awful there are as many of them on the road as Toyota. I've had at least 8 Hyundais and never had a problem with any of them. I even had a couple of the ones Scotty mentioned. Again. No problem. Any model or brand can have problems. If you like keeping your car 10 or 20 yrs then fine. But hold on to your shorts when you have to replace it. Especially since it won't have any value then. If you like getting new or newer every 5 yrs or so at least your vehicle should have a little value left. Have a nice day !

Failed to mention the massive depreciation of a car in the first three years, so if you replace one every 5 years or so you will be absorbing big losses when trading it in. It's makes much more economical sense to maintain and keep a car for at least 8-10 years.
@Steven-v5h2g

@@tims7738 Don't necessarily agree. After 10 yrs your car won't be worth much and after the warranty expires all the maintenance and repairs are on you. Then when you go look for another car you are basically starting from scratch and the price of a new or used one will probably knock your socks off. If you replace (not necessarily with brand new) you will or should have warranty and hopefully no repairs or problems.But do whatever works for you. Just my opinion.

@@Steven-v5h2gEach approach has its pros\cons, however, I don't think Hyundai and\or Kia's hold up as well mechanically as Toyota, Honda, or Mazda over time. I can only speak from experience, have a Mazda3 for almost 9 years, only basic maintenance, runs like new. A comparative car like the Elantra may have similar results, but overall I don't think the quality is on par with the Mazda.

My college student daughter drives a completely loaded 2008 Santa Fe AWD with 320,000 miles on it. Doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil, and the inside of the engine is spotless. Best snow vehicle in the family., and we live in Colorado. Drives like new. Best part, I bought it six years ago for $1000 with a blown transmission at 195k. $450 for a used transmission and a couple of afternoons busting my knuckles in the garage and it's been unstoppable since. I keep asking my daughter if she is ready for a newer car. She says she never wants to get rid of it. So while they have a lot of GDI and Theta II engine issues, those pre-2010 Santa Fe vehicles were very well built.

Every car winds up having some sort of issue. That's just the nature of the industry. Toyota is no different. How about their recent airbag recall. Or that huge issue 10 years ago when Toyota gas pedals would get stuck in the acceleration position. yeah, remember that one? Most Kia owners that I've talked to LOVE their cars and have gotten a ton of mileage out of them. But can we at least agree that EV's just aren't good cars no matter what who makes them. But they're still new. When the gas engine first came out I'm sure it took many many years to get to what they are today. Cars don't last forever. You get your 150k to 200k out of them and move on.

2011 Sonata GLS here. 145, 000 miles. 2.4 Theta. No problems. Done all the recalls. Use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and K&N filters changed every 6 months, Top Tier gas, Do the required maintenance on it. No problems, just brake jobs in my garage from time to time. Great car. Better than the Ford nightmares I've owned. Wife doesn't like the drive or ride in Toyotas and Hondas, loves the "fit" and "pep" of this one. The only bad part of these are the rust bucket rear brakes, changing them out is a royal pain, and the calipers tend to rust out and lock. Spring the extra cash and buy the rust treated ones from Rock Auto or such. My other rides are pre-1995 Jeeps. I work on them myself. Love, em.

Carfax notified me this morning (February 3) that Hyundai has a recall for the Ioniq 6 Rear Inner Driveshafts but reports "Remedy Not Available." I called the national Hyundai support line and was told they could offer no guidance yet. My local Santa Monica Hyundai Service sent me straight to voicemail and has not called back (further lowering my opinion of that dealer). Is the car safe to drive? (I doubt it, if a driveshaft is defective). Anybody have any guidance or further information?😂🤣

Everything thing he said about the oil consumption issue is True. My 2018 kia sportage sx turbo burned 4 to 5 quarts between oil changes by the time I traded it for a new vehicle in 2023 and I NEVER missed oil changes and kept it well maintained. I loved it before that started happening and i put over 200k miles on it, but it had to go. And Kia acts like oil burning engines is normal. I will never by another kia/hyundai product ever.
