This is the first time I heard a description of Rent-a-Girlfriend that made it sound worthwhile. Still not for me, but now I at least have a clearer idea what it wants to be.

I think I found a better way to explain the Monster Secret teacher take. In My Momster Secret the Teacher has anxiety about her age and she thinks she’s getting too old for marriage. (Probably around 25 because of a Christmas cake joke) so a man saying that she’s worth waiting a couple more years for helps her overcome that. Also the fact that her student looks 4 years older than his friends helps. It’s not super complex but it is only a volume long arc. Where as We Never Learn couldn’t create a good foundation for a series ending because it wouldn’t commit to actually having the MC develop more of a relationship with his teacher before the end. So all that’s left is to think about how creepy it is.

My favourite shoujo is Akatsuki no Yona. It kinda pretends that there's a love trianlge and it's a romance series, but then spends 95% of the time doing wars and shit.

i mean its fine.. im one of the people who enjoys reading or watching any kind of series, and i can also understand those who hates the series, so i really dont have a bias so here's what im gonna say.. stories like this is fine, they just have to find the right audience that would like it and it wouldnt take the story seriously, which is why the target audience for this is mostly shounen or teens this kind of stories are mostly made from the fantasies of the creator, and not base on reality which is why it doesnt need to get serious about it

Rent A Girlfriend is honestly just bad, no 2 ways about it. The pacing is horrible, we literally have an entire chapter dedicated to Kazuya trying to spot a mole on Chizurus thigh. What character development? Kazuya has only has character regression since the movie arc. Ruka Sumi and Mami have had no importance to the plot in like forever. Kazuyas monologues are so repetitive not only in the dialogue but in the panelling. Ichikawa from Dangers in my Heart is a similar type of character type and he has more growth than Kazuya, and Ichikawa is literally only 13 years old, Kazuya is a grown ass man who has less appeal than a middle school chuunibyou edgelord!

I agree there are chapters where nothing happens, but I usually find them endearing so I don’t care. Like the ones that are just showing off a fun party game. Since the movie arc is genuinely absurd when a lot of the largest shifts happen after that. Oh no we’ve recently had more contained chapters only focusing on a few characters? I don’t care that side characters can be absent from arcs. Yeah bro that fictional 13 year old is really owning that fictional college student. Reminds me of how embarrassing it is that Guys from berserk, a grown ass man, has a way harder time dealing with grief and trauma than the true black swordsman Kirito, a child.

Its not that Reiji needs to write the rest of the girls into the plot, its that hes writing filler garbage as a replacement for giving characters screentime, which wouldnt make it great, but it would be better than writing the trash that was the period mini arc or the cringe Twister or underwearchapters, how many pages of repeadly describing how cute Mizuhara is or what she is wearing every chapter can you tolerate until enough is enough? Reiji does not treat Chizuru like an actual character, he views her as his girlfriend and uses the other characters in the story to gas her up. Im not making shit up Reiji has posted on Twitter how obsessed he is over he, and thats hurting the story, and everyone sees it for what it is. Stop settling for less and demand better. I was actually using Ichikawa because they have the same voice actor and have similar insecurity issues, but almost any main character in any recent romcom I can name is more tolerable. Youre being disingenous by using that Kirito/Guts analogy. No hate towards you, I really like your One Piece takes, but this series is NOT it.

The Guts Kirito comparison is unfair, I was being a goofster you are right. My general point is just comparing fictional characters that way doesn’t make sense. It’s like pointing out that Naruto wouldn’t be able to talk no jutsu Don Krieg, you’re not engaging with what the series are trying to do differently you’re just saying one is cooler to you. @trashiki By not handwaving the hate RaG gets as just "oh these people dont get it, Kazuya is purposely written to be flawed and pathethic" everyone knows Kazuya is flawed, he was been that way since the beginning. But Reijis character writing is not good enough to justify that for Rent A Girlfriend to be over 300 chapters long. Other romcom manga like Nagatoro, Anjou-san, Uzaki, BokuYaba, have better pacing and romantic progression than RaG in less chapters.

Although I think rent a girlfriend with its longer spanning arcs and more complicated drama web having more chapters than something like Uzaki or nagatoro just makes sense.
