He was dead serious but he broke the ice to cover himself. He later thought and regretted it deeply when he was on the boat. He wanted to get Thors out of his head cuz he reminded him of the type of "Warrior" he'd never be. But Thorfinn followed all the time so you get why Thors was always on his mind. His character is complex and really deep.

My favorite moment form the anime is when the priest is talking about “love” and how the only example is Jesus and his sacrifice but believes that true love is not real. However when the two Viking pals mention Thor’s lack of killing the priest has a 180 change because now he believes that humans can truly “love” one another.

Actually, Askeladd is the name of the most famous folktale hero in Norway (I'm Norwegian), which I think really adds a great element to Askeladd in Vinland Saga. The animators have obviously added something from Norway, since they're talking about Norwegian kings, and a girl in the show called Rogaland, which is a state in Norway.

This is not a spoiler. Like so Nux can see this! Just a small correction: Vinland does exist! It is how the Vikings of the time called the Americas. They stumbled upon an entire continent by accident on a exploration expedition, hundreds of years before Columbus made his own trip. Leif Ericsson (sailor dude from the show) was a real person who, according to historians sailed across the ocean around the arctic circle and landed in what we know today as North America, probably somewhere in Canada. They even interacted with natives in the region and created a small colony that eventually perished for mysterious reasons... No proper archeological evidence of this colony has been found to this day, which is why it is still considered a contested theory and not a historical fact. The more you know!

Personally I see that more as the idea of the forever green Vinland that is so pure is what Thors is referencing. I know the whole Leif Erikson saying that’s what it is, but I think it’s is more of the idea that this perfect land/utopia doesn’t exist. More of like a foil for Thorfinn for reality.

The fact that it is in fact a real place but is also in the show an idealized form of 'heaven' is really well done, as its a metaphor for how if each person can find there purpose in life and achieve that "Vinland" on the metaphorical level, its possible to achieve, though with great strife and sacrifice, which is what Cnut seems to have understood.

My favorite anime of 2019. I had low expectations going in and by the end of episode 4, I was immediately hooked. Askeladd isn't one of the best characters written in just Vinland Saga, he's one of the best fictional characters written period! An amazing show from start to finish and I'm glad I got to experience the journey alongside with many others in 2019. King Cnut the Great wasnt remembererd as a Tyrant, but a highly competent warrior king who conquered england norway and denmark, with some of sweden. He established the Danish Sea Empire, which even ruled over scotland (which didnt happen again until King Edward, and even that was brief). Hes actually remembered as the most competent Anglo Saxon Ruler, even though hes technically Danish.

Thought you might be interested to know but the way Roman names work is, the first one is the praenomen which is chosen from a short list, the second is the nomen which is the family name, and the third is the cognomen which is basically a nickname. so Gaius Julius Caesar is Gaius of the family Julii the hairy( making fun of him being bald) and in the case of Askeladd he is Lucius Artorius Castus, Lucius of the family Artorii the pure or guiltless. Odd considering his ruthless nature.

Also Aot's animation was worse than Vinland's. If you actually paid attention to the episodes before Ragnar dies and a little after, you'll realize Canute's development wasn't 'out of nowhere'. Also Character writing and development in Vinland is much greater than aot, manga wise and anime.

Dude the second part of Vinland Saga is so good. It's way less focused on battles but the story is really good and philosophical. Thorfinn is more like his father. "You don't have enemies" kinda of thing, finding purpose, seeking peace and dialog and the ghosts of the war and violence

If I were to summarise what makes Vinland so great: You know in One Piece where everyone's searching for a treasure and Luffy and Co are just a part of the chaos. Imagine that but with Vikings and actual historical background. Oh and Seinen.

Love this analysis! BUT, Askeladd doesn’t like himself. In fact, self-hatred is the root of his entire character. He despises the Vikings, and yet, in his own words, he is just another Viking. The only Viking he doesn’t whole-heartedly hate is Bjorn, not himself.

I think you also forgot one important detail that even though they ended differently, they also started differently. askeladd path started with as regular person who was looking for peace and ending as Viking while as for thors he began as a Viking and ended up living a peaceful life as a common person

So Vinland Saga is kinda like Berserk in the way how they set up the story/anime. Where it show the infancy of the main character but the manga covers the main story. Can't wait for the next season where the animation and sound quality goes down and all we hear are pots and pans.

Actually askeladd is a common children story name in Norway and the name comes from the story of askeladd which are old tales found and written down by asbjørnsen and mo which is many different stories about a kid name askeladd which goes from working in the ashes in the fire being the weakest which always ends up with him getting the princess or him becoming all powerful. I do not know how the story fits in with the character askeladd in vinland saga but that is where the name askeladd is from at least in norway.

I thought askeladd had a bit of a mary sue origin story, with him going from a boy who dug shit and ash who lived with a sickly mother who told him fantastical story -- to a perfect swordsmen first try, also a great actor and machiavielain mind, all within the mind of a boy who had no reasons to really have the skills that he has, but who has reasons for the things he does.
