Nice track! My initial reaction was to go "hell no, artistic integrity is everything, keep the gap in the Vox" - but then flipped the concept on its head and thought "what If I originally wrote the vocals running together like that - would I put the gaps in?" The answer would be no. Maybe to mix it up as a build out of a breakdown or something but yeah - less is more. Thanks man.

@@BobbyHuff It’s rare I like starting on the chorus, but ‘Counting Stars’ by One Republic in the lower octave with just a classical is stylish move. It gives the song something to come back to when it needs to pump the breaks later on. As a songwriter, it’s perfectly executed. Then again, even that’s an evolution of the Beatles.

Not arguing the correctness of this in today's society but it's freaking sad. Zep, Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, etc. would never make it as a new band today and we would never have had that great music because nobody has the patience to just chill with a song.

Well, Bob is drawing on techniques that predate those bands. Context is also important. The bands (types of bands) you mentioned were not writing for pop forms. Nevertheless, these kinds of techniques are not saddled to formats. They’re just good techniques that each of those bands routinely applied.

🤣🙃😂 So you know how every time I say I have a mix to send it takes 3 days? LOL so true! That focus trick is super important! You can get too detail focused and miss the sound and feel of the whole thing. For me, it seems to help if I kinda stretch my face, blink, widen my eyes, then try to really let it relax... and also to keep my eyes moving around the room without really settling... and the whole sound of the mix comes through. BTW, I really dig your adapted arrangement, it grooves and does indeed get to the point. And here we see why the new pop song is 2:30. Crazy. BTW, Mama just hit KZbin and your master is just brilliant, it sounds better after the algorithm than ever before. Folks, you need help hit the Doc up, he's amazing! :)

First version is classic The Sweet, for the second version they brought in Jeff Lynne. :-) Shame they don't give you time to build your verse anymore, but that said, the second version is tighter and more fun. Would love to hear the whole thing! And I totally agree - if in doubt, cut out every other thing, and most of the time, surprisingly, it'll work just as well or better.

Dude!? This is terrific. Thanks for sharing your experience and that of your heroes. You're one of my heroes! hehehe. Seriously, this is great insight and let's us knwo we should be listening with more than our ears, just mixing, but from more of a producer's perspective. Although, while I love what you did with this, it may be difficult to get the composer/songwriter/band on board with your changes. What guidance would you give to overcome that type of hurdle?

The technique and point of the video is solid... good one. I would have liked to hear the verse split; I missed the space. And going from space to losing the gap would in itself build momentum. As it ended up, we lost the Beavis and Butthead head shaking air guitar and now it's just wall-to-wall vocal lines. I had a hard time telling the sections apart a bit on first listen, actually. Anyway, nice singing and playing. Thx for sharing!

Yeah.I thought it would sound good leaving the first two gaps , with maybe a novelty hook in between.. and then the continuous part follows. Any later verses could all be joined up like the part in this video. But that's the point, to always try everything and constantly think of the listener's attention span.
@jeffrey.a.hanson
@jeffrey.a.hanson 3 ай бұрын
Funny enough, I wrote my comment before the solution to see if I’d do the same. Yup! Create the perception of speed (horizontal movement) and build up the size (vertical stacking). To do this takes experience, but if this cliche rock song can become entertaining, anything can.

I love you, Doc, but the idea that 'the greatest of the [music] industry are the best ones at grabbing the attention of the common listener' is absurd. I guess we disagree on the meaning of 'greatest.' Surely one cannot deny that they're the best at reaching the masses; that's a pretty objective, relatively easy thing to measure. The material that falls into that category is seldom the greatest. A lot of it is actually garbage. Though I guess in making that pronouncement, I'm committing the modern cardinal sin of passing judgment-the blasphemy of pronouncing one piece of art better than another. For the only sensible modern thing to say is that 'it's subjective,' the myth goes. Thank you for your great videos

Thanks. My hero’s are the greatest at their craft in my opinion maybe not everyone’s opinion. Because I hold them in such high regard it really focuses my attention to play them songs or to pretend they are with me listening to my music. If your hero’s are different than mine the technique still works just swap out the names.
