Dear Fab Rats gang, please let me come and give y'all a short crash course on maching please. I was a machinist for forty plus years and I was doing my best not to holler at y'all setting up the case. Y'all do a remarkable job on all these builds. But just a couple of days and I could turn you into a pretty dang good machinist cause you have a really good mechanical mindset. I've got indicators, toolbits, gage blocks, dial bore gages, OD and ID mics and just way to much to list of precision tools I purchased through the years. I'd be more than happy to donate to them to you just so they are used. These tools aren't made in China!
@Walkeranz2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you should make a trip and pay a visit. It would be cool to watch some basic machining setups and techniques.
@78Gatorbait2 жыл бұрын
I was looking for this comment. I'm not a machinist by trade but was thinking please indicate in the head, then indicate in the case. Maybe the case was sitting on a square surface. Then when the bearing dropped in that easy all I could think about was the race turning. I hope it all works out long term.

I was wondering should have that been a press fit on that transfer case or does that get clamped in position? I saw that it had a retaining ring on the outside of the bearing I was just wondering if the race is going to spin, I worked on pumps for years and building electric motors so I know a little bit about bearings

It’s so cool to see you and Ben keeping your Dad’s truck alive and working. Paul, you and your crew give me inspiration to keep moving forward, despite my health challenges, and work on the projects I want to do. I have an ‘89 Caravelle cuddy cabin that I’m going to pull the motor out and rebuild, and then restore the gel coat, out a new interior in, and get onto the lake - and I’m going to do it with our oldest son. Then it’s build a hot rod time! I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 3-1/2 years ago, but I refuse to give up. I struggle daily with some relatively simple tasks, but watching you guys gives me inspiration and confidence that no matter what, I can make these plans a reality. Thank you, Michelle, the kids, Randall, and now Ben. May God continue to bless, guide and protect you all, and give you even more success! You all rock!!

Good to see your mum drop in to see her boys at work. We all know that this truck has very strong family conections, and it will reflect the families approch to life as in we will make it happen. it will go anywhere to get the job done. No mountain too step for you guys. it will always have someone specail ridding along with you Paul. So your old mate is there helping you to put it together and enjoying the laughts. You don't have to see him to feel that. Bloody good to see a strong family working together, cuzzy included. It won't be long before your boys start making a mark in life, and you Paul along with your wife Michelle have given them an awesome start. lets hope one day we will see a graet you tube video with one of your boys doing some thing really cool in that great old family truck towing back some future electricail junk that has broken down. I found your channel by of cause Matts Off Road but I have grown to love it, so thank you for some great entertaining videos from the Fab Rat Team. kept it going.

Hey I don't know if this is an episode y'all would want to do, but I'm super curious about Paul's utility crane he built. I have a small shop in Virginia where I rebuild classic Land Rovers and a crane like that would be incredibly useful. Do you think you might ever post a video detailing how he made it and what kind of weight it can hold, bearings he used, just an overview of the construction, etc? Love the channel, love that I can watch it with my kids, and I'm glad y'all are doing well with it. Take care!

Paul has an inventory control system like none other. He buys scrap parts and stacks them around the yard. When he needs a part he looks around piles and piles of parts till he finds one. After he disassembled it and combines the best looking of those parts. If necessary he mills and modifies things to make good as used parts. And it works 87% of the time!

One thing I like about your vids,... you show it all, the good and the bad. You don't attempt to cover up mistakes like a lot of guys do on these type channels, and that's life. Everyone does it and you make it real. The 203.205 doubler is an awesome and very strong set up! I hate to admit it, it is stronger than my Atlas. I'm lower, but my rig couldn't take the abuse that will be required from this old truck. Speaking of lower, Unless one of those cases have a lot deeper gear than what I know of, which is around the 2.9 low range, you should end up with more like a 4.0:1 low low gearing in just the T-cases. Which with your tire size and gearing you are going with, will be so much better than what you had. A lot of my friends end up going with the turbo 350 for two reasons, you can put a deeper first gear in them from a 700R4 tranny, and with the Turbo 400 you very often have to run a two piece front drive shaft because of the pan size of the 400. If and when you have to run a 2 piece front drive shaft, look for a forged carrier bearing. The cast ones can and will explode on you. Seen it, and it's not pretty. Since this truck will be responsible for not only it's on weight, but that of other vehicles, I do think it's the way to go. Oh and since it's a "rat Rod" get creative with all three of the shifter knobs ;) Good luck with the rest of the build. My only complaint is that I have to wait so long between vids! If it were up to me, one a day would not be enough LOL, Thanks for all the sharing!

I rebuild the 205 in my 1-G-D. After nearly 20, it's still in there, doing it's thing without complaint. I remember sorting out issues with the parts kit (input shaft bearing sizes were wrong) and having to consult my transmission man for setting up the bearings on the countershaft. Mid January, working outside, trying to get it re-installed by myself, was not easy. I envy you having so much good help available. I recently found out that my transmission man now has a store/shop in Billings, MT. What was "Quad 4x4" is now "Torque King" and they carry or even make a lot of stuff that is often sought after. That includes a lot of upgrade items, for replacing OEM parts that turned out to be ... not so great. So, there's another parts source to add to your call list ... Dan did the upgrade on my transmission, and I've had zero issues with it. Absolutely no problems with transmission or the installation. After 20 years, that deserves an endorsement.
