Just finished my apprenticeship and I live watching these videos. Short term I am hoping to learn more from the company I work for, but e eventually If like to work for myself. These videos are really helpful. Thanks Nick.

I looked into heatshrink for my Brother label printer, however I needed something that I could use in places like datacenters with highly sensitive smoke detection, so heatshrink would have probably been a bad idea! Instead, I've started using the "cable wrap" feature coupled with the special "Flexible ID" tapes which are super flexible and easily wrap around cables. Gives a similar overall end result but can make super small labels if you use the 12mm tape, even down to labelling individual cores.

Greetings Nick and Adam The jobsite was not ready for electrical work. You should have left and come back when it is in a dry condition. All kitchen plans should have been finalized by now.

Hi Nick, looks great! I use a Bosch GHG 18V-50 b.t.w. for heat shrink tubing and it works like a charm.

If their Aico alarms you can just put a radio base in kitchen and an RF module in another smoke in the house (or an radio base) either way will work
@TPV07 Жыл бұрын
If the kitchen cabinet goes to the ceiling you can put the switches on the side of the cabinet. Have the kitchen fittee close off the inside al the way up so you can run cables in it all the way up to the ceiling. I’ve done this a few times

I've found heat shrink boxes it ends up where you want to strip back the outer sheath. I'd have possibly considered a deeper box with all that is going to be going on in there, 4 gang dimmers plus wagos for CPCs and neutrals is going to require Artisan levels of planning and neatness but without the 800% markup to pay for it ;-)
@firsteerr Жыл бұрын
the mark up is to pay for all the silicone and chicken dippers - artisan
@TheGorillahands Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same, with multiple t&es in a box you want to strip em back as far as you can
@supersparks9466 Жыл бұрын
Labels are nice but 47mm boxes if you’re gonna strip up to the labels otherwise it will get busy especially if dimmers are fitted, personally a sharpie at 1st fix should suffice then nice labels at 2nd fix if you wanna go that far.
@davecowan860 Жыл бұрын
This. Labels not really necessary but something different for KZbin! 47mm boxes at multi gang light switches if there’s any chance of wanting a dimmer….always!

Like that heat shrink labels, maybe overkill for your job but would be good in industry. Guess you could use the next size up as it will shrink down

not ment to drill holes in insulation. the insulation should be on top of the roof. holes in the insulation will cause condensation and mold

If you really need to run cables in one of them steels, have used the 'Bosch Expert Sheet Metal Hole Saw' before. With some cutting oil on, it just minces through them steels.

Something I've never thought of before but... We know that the big brown book gives us our zoning for walls, but is there anything for floors? Just a thought for when you have to run cabling to kitchen islands.
@andrewr7857 Жыл бұрын
Fair point, but can’t think of anything, but then I’d imagine it can be hugely variable.
@johnwarwick4105 Жыл бұрын
Looked at the building begs for DRILLING beams and it says not within a meter of the wall. Can’t see the justification in that but that’s what it says. We were always thought years ago that that was the best place
@mikeappleton7503 Жыл бұрын
Nick, holes in the ceiling joists should be in the centre to meet building regs. As for zones if you can get cables deeper than 50mm you can go outside zones.

For a scenario like this I’d be seriously thinking about metal conduit as then some of the zoning concerns fall away with the presence of mechanical protection. Also I’d imagine the walls and roof will be getting built out with insulation, so cable rating would be an issue for getting toasty if just chased in the wall under the insulation.

I’ve never understood why you’d get the electricians (or plumbers) in before you’ve chosen your kitchen layout. That’s just asking for trouble.
@supersparks9466 Жыл бұрын
Personally I wouldn’t of worried too much about the zone around the rsj, having said that there is always a correct way to do it and keep the regs book happy, 1, make cables more than 50mmdeep, 2, use cable with a metallic sheath or metal conduit. There is a fp200 type cable (can’t remember it atm) that will comply so you could use those for the switch drops only.

Personally I would have left the tools on the van and said give me a call when you have made your mind up and the builder is finished doing the roof. I would have drilled the steel if the steel wasn't going to be squared off, which it should be to plaster board it. They can't really insulate the roof anyway as you will have to get across it when you do the sockets. I always get pissed off when they put timber rafters tight to the wall, the building regs say a minimum gap of 50mm away from the wall for services, but then again builders and joiners don't know building regs, they rely on the building inspector to tell them how to do the job.
