Amazing that he started thinking so big so young. A good episode to motivate your kids. I started thinking about much larger static context when I saw that game AI Town and what would really long context windows and data look like with AI and for individuals.

20:25 Question: Here is sounds like the product Magic wants to release IS as an automatic coder But in the beginning, it sounded more like their ultimate goal was AGI, and that making an AI-coder was just a shortcut to a AGI model, because if it can do coding, it can make AI-code, and it can then test the code it has made, and if it turns out the AI-code it has made is better than the AI-code that made it, then it switches to THAT and then repeats the process, on and on and on, until it has AI-code which is as good as AGI. So I am confused as to what is the case? Is their goal to release a coding assistant or is it to set up an internal cycle of iterations of steadily improved AI-models making each other, so that they get better and better until they reach AGI?

I mean from the outside looking in, these promises especially with this founder are giving off crypto hype vibes. He could just be really passionate. I'm sure its genuine, the investors seen something hopeful and working, but just from the outside i'm not convinced. Long context is amazing, but foremost reasoning is #1. You can work around context size much easier than forcing a model to even try and figure out something its barely capable of. Its sooo much easier working with a model that outputs correct code first try vs literally spending hours going back and forth with a less capable mode. Gemeni 1.5 pro has 2M context, i gave it the entire niche code language manual and did the almost the same for claude which had much less context (I was using the free version) and claude output much more of what i was looking for while gemini hallucinated syntax and more. I hope to see some reasoning and coding benchmarks when they are ready, best of luck!

How does one invest in Magic? I hear of all these people who invest in OpenAI, etc. How come we normal people don't have a way to put our hard-earned money into something we believe in? Is it only for the people who are already rich to get even richer?

Yes you have to have a certain level of net worth to invest in these private early stage companies. You can look at secondary markets, which are where you can buy shares off of early employees. Either way the failure rate is really high, so do it at your own risk.

Its more nuanced. Startups like Magic are a dime a dozen so pretty much anybody in that world with a checkbook wants to invest. This creates a competitive dynamic where theres about 5-10 slots and whether you get in or not depends on what else besides the money you can bring to the table. This generally applies any "trending" or "promising" startup but its especially true for A.I where the competitive dynamics are taken to an extreme. Just to use an example, if you are building foundational models you'll need to raise billions over the lifetime of the company and there is like a handful of players in the world that can easily dish out that kind of money so having these people seed you can make a massive difference. Oh also there is socialism. In America, the SEC thinks the average person is too dumb and poor to invest in private companies (google investor accreditation SEC).

You think he'd look like Sam Bankman-Fried if he did that?!? I don't. I get NO fraud-vibes from this guy. Just a boy who is obsessed with getting his project to work. That seems totally natural and healthy to be. As far as I understand, that's how most great inventions are made - by people who are driven and obsessed by their curiosity.
