There's nothing strange, but it does highlight a possibly still common myth that not all roles are available to both men and women in the RAF. Kind regards RAF Recruitment

I applied to join the RAF as an officer and during the recruitment process at Cranwell, I got the distinct feeling that they had a quota to fill. All of the women passed through without a hiccup, even though a couple of them seemed incompetent, whilst a good handful of chaps (myself included) were sent home. Seems to me like the forces are bending over backwards to recruit people based on their skin colour and/ or genitalia, rather than their actual desire to serve and their competence. So we won’t be able to hold our own in full scale war, but never mind, look how diverse we are. 🙄

ellaminns perhaps they were better than me. I particularly enjoyed the leadership exercise in which we take it in turns to get your team from one side of an obstacle course to the other. I felt I performed quite well during this exercise, having actually directed my team well, listening to suggestions and acting with haste. I was the only candidate to get someone to the finishing line of a purposefully difficult exercise. One female in my syndicate was visibly stressed during her turn as leader and almost cried at one point (I shit you not). Another gentleman who happened to be black, could barely speak with clarity, had no organizational or people skills and ended up in a huff during his turn as leader. This gentleman also let on that during the individual planning exercise (using speed/distance/time calculations to solve a problem in a mission like scenario) he didn’t actually realise what the numbers on the paper meant! Guess who passed through and who didn’t? Go on have a guess.

And I'm tired of hearing about exceptional females (anomalies) who have such a records etc when In everyday life I see the exact opposite. RAF seem to only be interested in fulfilling certain quotas at the moment, I went to an afco and was basically told that grades are the only thing that matter, even if you have practical experience and a willingness to commit for the 12 year contract some roles have, it is still less then having a levels. I'm not saying that there shouldn't be requirements as each role is different from the next however I also feel that individual circumstances should also be taken into account. For example, I grew up in an unstable house hold, Ill parent, hated school, ice skated from 7 till 12 and obtained gold, got my scuba diving open water certificate at 10 and started flying light aircraft at 13 when I first took, the controls of a tiger moth at IWM Duxford. I went back to school in year 10 but got given the stupid treatment meaning I was stuck in classes that guaranteed I would not get the grades I needed. So I left again then found an alternate school in year 11 that focused on actually helping people, did 8 months on half days got 7 gcses and actually liked school for once. In that time I was also getting a PPL, Got that a year later. I now have a love for flying that is awesome. It's like being free and flying such old aircraft makes me feel like I'm keeping history alive. Anyway, I was told that there was a waiting time for flight training and that competition was fierce, something I already knew. I was flat out told that it didn't matter that I had a pilots license. This is something I find slightly annoying, it shows a proven ability to be taught multiple subjects and succeed, it shows an ability to fly, navigate, communicate and solve problems but no, a levels are more important. I feel the reason the armed services are lacking people is because of quotas, being PC and not giving individuals with alternative but relevant skills the opportunity to demonstrate their worth.
@royalairforce
@royalairforce 5 жыл бұрын
Hi The entry requirements are in place for each role as a level for various reasons, but the main one is to make sure you have the learning capacity for phase one and phase two training. From your comment I'm guessing you're interested in applying to be a pilot? As has already been advised to you, you don't need a PPL to be a pilot in the RAF, we train everyone from scratch as military flying has different areas that civilian doesn't, of course. Have you thought about applying for a different role in the RAF, doing your A levels (or an equivalent) while in service and then applying for your commission at that point? It's an option. Kind regards RAF Recruitment

@@prefectkyro5462 I'm all for having people that are not generally included in such jobs in the Forces however this just feels forced to an extent, for this advert as an example i feel that it would get a lot more positive press if they showed everyone doing a job and not just one group. such as the old advert with the 19 y/o who works with the Red Arrows. it shows everyone doing a job, sure she is the main subject however they show her in a way that doesn't make it seem like there is some issue with equality.

@@royalairforce I have not as i was not made aware that it was an option however even if it is I would be hesitant, flying is what i know and love, it's what i am best at doing and excel at, if i'm on the ground i'm wishing i was flying and if i'm flying i forget about everything else and only focus on it, therefore i shall be doing my commercial license in America soon. Thanks for the reply and have a good day.
@TheLoachman
@TheLoachman 5 жыл бұрын
@@ThatGuysProject I was, until recently, a Helicopter Pilot in the Canadian Armed Forces. I also held commercial helicopter and seized-wing licences. A private licence is irrelevant to military flying, and is no indicator of success. I have seen those with commercial licences fail, often because they have learned incompatible habits that they cannot break. Military flying courses are intensive. Not everybody can learn at the rate required. Not everybody is motivated enough. Not everybody is willing to make the effort. Education is seen as an indicator of learning ability. It is not the only one, however, which is why there is a fairly demanding evaluation and selection process for flying training. We were told, when I began my military flying training, that only one in eight hundred Pilot applicants earned his (now his or her) Wings. Seeing how many applicants were culled out in the recruiting process, Aircrew Selection (only two of us in my contingent passed, and the other fellow only made it one stage further), Basic Officer Training, and three phases of Flying Training (Beechcraft CT134 Musketeer, Canadair CT114 Tutor, and Bell CH139 Jet Ranger in my case), I never had any reason to doubt the validity of that claim. Only half of my Musketeer course graduated, most of my Jet course did, but all of us on my Basic Helicopter course did. Nothing taught on my Musketeer course was of any direct value on the Jet course, and none of my modest previous civilian flying time was of any real value on the Musketeer course, either. It's far, far more difficult than you think, and there is no adequate way of describing the challenge. It is worth the effort, though, if that is your ultimate goal. And, if you do want those Wings, and want them enough, then skip the commercial flying training and upgrade your education instead, and do everything else required to not meet, but EXCEED, the entry standards. Make yourself competitive.

We are also naturally inclined to look after anyone we have an attachment to. By a similar line of thinking, a soldier might prefer to prioritize his wounded friends or even relatives over his other comrades even if the latter are more seriously hurt. Yet this has never been considered an issue. I'm not a fan of women in front line combat, but this reason is rather low on my list.

@@becauseiwasinverted5222 Maybe so and a fair point. Another point I have is all the blokes know they've all gone through the exact same training and know they all passed for the same reasons under the same criteria. However, from what I've heard and read, women are given lighter kit and lower PT values... physically, men are stronger than women (Unless you're a complete fool and disagree) but equal to me means The Exact Same and I stand by the fact women in the forces should be given the exact same kit and PT values. If they can pass that good, if not then its anything but equal. My uncle who served stated the most annoying thing he heard on the battle field was a womens voice screaming over the radio.

Whether you’re someone who’s about to comment a statistic about men being stronger than woman and quote something about gender roles or about to comment something about women having the same opportunities - am I the only one who feels like they’re ironically ostracizing women by the voiceovers? All the lines are stereotypically voices as if it were a beauty product - this is the definition of a cliché and in my opinion is almost as bad as the Gillette shaving commercial but for women. We know anyone in the armed forces just wants to fit in by doing their job and protecting their country regardless of their gender. They could’ve just taken the tag line at the end and keep most of the video silent showing women doing the same jobs as men. Judge by actions. The end.

Yes, there are differences between men and women, and fewer women are interested in military careers than men are, and many of them are challenged by the strength and stamina requirements of some military occupations, but do not underestimate the capabilities of those who meet, and often exceed, the standards. If you don't, that's fine but don't mess around with the most difficult job that life has to offer which is turning out happy, confident, caring and understanding kids who don't need therapists by the age of 8. No matter what women say, thinking that children won't be affected by an absent mother, there is no other way.
