This is why I exclusively follow wavy girls and not curly girls. The needs of us wavies are so much different than of curlies!

It is interesting to try new things though and some method that curlies use might be beneficial but I understand the struggle. I am subscribed to some wavy and some curly girls because I am in between so it takes trying multiple things from multiple people as 2c-3a hair isn’t very common.

I also like subscribing to people with different outlooks and that tends to mean different wave/curl patterns also. While not everyone’s preference I like seeing how others deal with similar concepts and systems. So Courtney as a cgm following wavy and manes by mell who doesn’t follow cgm but is curly. Lots of tips and tricks to try and different results on the same products.

But… needs? It’s not a need for wavy girls to scrunch, scrunching is a way to make their hair look curly. If you don’t scrunch maybe your hair won’t be as curly or wavy, and then that’s your natural hair!

Long before the CGM, when I was younger with more hair, I used the rake and shake method. It gave my wavy hair incredible curly waves with loads of volume. I didn’t need a bunch of rules to have beautiful, natural hair.

Yes! All those rules and definitions make me crazy! I was scrunching my gel 35 years ago (before the curly girl madness) and I still do. I love tips and trying new things but some curly girls are straight up crazy! That’s why I only watch channels like this and do not belong to any groups.

I take really small sections after i apply my leave in and style cream and form ringlets with the denman brush then glaze gel over all of my hair and scrunch then diffuse. My hair is (2c-3a)

I really love how you apply new methods... your comparisons are awesome! I think you just have a naturally very lazy wave in your hair. Which is absolutely beautiful!! My sister has what we call a lazy curl pattern, which waves but more frequently down the length, where as my mom and I's curl pattern is curly from root to tip. What your hair tends to naturally do without manipulation is what your actual hair is naturally. Of course, your hair is longer so the weight will tend to pull out your lazy wave. Where your layers are in front (shorter) is wavy-er tending towards a curl, but by the end of the day even that tends to go natural. I, of course, would not try to add or change a thing if I had your hair, but then I have frizzy kinky curl that I wish would lay down flat on my head and relax a while. We all know we want what we can't have. I'm grateful to God that He brought along all these ladies who encouraged curly gals to embrace them and take care of them. The manesbymel method tends to work best for me, but I honestly likely end up doing my hair the way you tried here more often. I just can't stand spending hours in my bathroom between shower/ style. Maybe what you're needing is a new shape cut to liven things up on those shiny locks... it really does look to me like the weight of your hair is now working against you to create those full bouncy waves you so enjoy. My daughter has the same issue, she loves the amount of wave she naturally has but her hair is thick and once it gets passed her shoulders the weight of it takes over. Looks like you'd be a good candidate for those soft foam sticks that you wrap locks around and they bend to get definition and body with a natural dry process. Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about being still while your hair dries. Thanks for sharing! Smiles and blessings...

The change in your hair... when my hair starts behaving unusually, I can chalk it up to needing to clarify. I'm assuming you've been down that route so bear with me... you seem like a technically curious and even savvy human. Is there a potential chemical x-factor here? The water you wash your hair with? Your laundry detergent? Could your hair be reacting to something elemental like a change in air quality? I'm not looking for an answer. I just tend to dive down rabbit holes. Toss me a line! LOL ;)

Thanks for showing us different styling techniques! It really demonstrates that each person's hair is unique and we all have to find what works for us. I think I might give this a shot, just to see what would happen. My hair does much better if I air dry. It doesn't take much diffusing for it to become frizzy. Likewise, I don't have to scrunch much to get a curl pattern. Thanks Courtney! You're the best 👍😊

Thanks for showing this! I know with my own fine wavy hair, if I want to do "gentle heatless straightening," I brush it a bunch of times when it's wet and drying. I think with more wavy hair, brushing and raking is a great way to straighten it. It seems like you'd need a pretty strong curl pattern to hold up to that much brushing and raking with no scrunching. I agree with you; I'm impressed you did have some wave/curl at the end after all those weighing-down factors! :)

Great challenge and useful experiments, thank you. The Grateful Hairstylist I don't think scrunches or plops in her curly specialist salon. She adds products like you did in sections then she diffuses immediately to take the water weight out. I didn't think this would work for me as I'm wavy with a few 3a curls but it actually worked pretty well.

I think it gives you a beachy waves look. I'd never air dry. The back of my head won't dry and it starts to make my underlayer clump together so hard it has zero movement. But with diffusing it would be good.

Thanks Courtney, your videos are always so interesting and helpful! I’ve been thinking about your hair. I know that due to all the single styler videos you’ve been using the same shampoo and conditioner over and over. While they’re formulated for your hair, I wonder if perhaps they don’t agree with you somehow. Thinking about the people who had problems with Deva Curl and how those with the most problems were those who used them as their primary hair products. It seemed like people who switched things up and just used DC occasionally didn’t have nearly the issues. Since you’ve been using the same products so often maybe that’s causing problems for your hair. It would be interesting to see if you stopped using them for a while if you see any changes.

I have only ever scrunched my hair when styling. My introduction to styling was by scrunching in mousse and even though I use other application methods and styling and not exclusively scrunching its natural to do so now especially if I decide to add more gel after plopping. I might try not scrunching my hair one day though as especially now that my hair is shorter I will probably be refreshing almost daily anyways. So might as well try for a day or two.

Usually means you need more moisture. Try incorporating deep conditioning with heat in your routine. Also, make sure to use lightweight products so they don’t drag the curl down. You can also use a sea salt spray. Your hair will hold moisture more with salt water and therefore be curlier. You can make it yourself too!

My hair has always curled at the ends, I always had a single ringlet in the back that always survived my extreme brushing. One time a friend in school asked how I did it and I was like I didn't do anything, and she said that it was cool. I never really considered that my hair could do anything more that that. My hairs really weird. I have some bigger ringlets underneath in the back, with waves mixed in, front/top layer looks nearly straight compared to the underneath of my hair with only a hint of curl or wave at the front pieces. And then of course I have some baby hairs that have a curl right from the top. Every time I do my hair I pull the front pieces back or braid them and pull them back because if I don't it looks more straight than it is and if i do, you can see the ringlets lol😭 I haven't tried any products except for sea salt spray my mom had yet due to money reasons, and I plop, scrunch, & diffuse but I'm hoping to get curlsmith's Shine line soon and see if that helps anything out. But yea. I like my hair when it just air drys although it only curls on the ends

i dont apply products (dont like crunchiness and stringly look from it) and brush my hair out after shower and then air dry and it works for me. my hair is a bit curlier than yours naturally i think, but i just prefer less frizz and more order in my hair that i get when i brush down my hair and let it curl up on its own, rather than using products and scrunching which just makes it too messy and hard. i think it just goes to show that different hair works differently as well as people prefer different qualities of it even among wavo-curly folks

This is so funny, I've been doing this method for a few weeks now, not knowing it's a known method. My waves like it, my clumbs are thicker, less stringy. I am going to try this up site down. So curious what the result will be

I gotta say I liked it trying the no scrunch challenge and upright styling. It didnt look stringy at all. I think you are having stringy hair cause of how much you rake through your hair to get it to not stick to the back of your head. All the raking breaks up your curl clumps imo. I've stopped upside down styling all together cause it drives me crazy. I avoid the issues with upside down styling and I wet apply leave in and cream cream in the shower and then wet plop in a shower cap to get dressed and do skin care then apply my styling products and I dont brush my hair at all or rake. Just scrunch and then I "reverse" plop where all the hair is plopped in curl towel at the base of my neck for 20 mins. Then take it down and apply a bit more product with wet hands. I avoid all the issues of styling upside down this way. No weird messy back part and I still have volume after I sotc.

I used to do this because it let's my actual curl pattern show! But it's frustrating that it takes so long to dry so I kind of gently shake my head back and forth to get some water out

This is really cool! I think this won’t on my hair cause I’m 2C/3A and needs lots of scrunching

I would like to try this. I’ve wanted to try in the past but always felt like scrunching is the only way to get the definition I want...but would be a fun experiment cause usually I just scrunch the hair all together. I feel like at least using this technique would insure I don’t miss any sections with product.

My hair does the same without scrunching. Btw, I hope you will try the Ecoslay Jello Shot, I am so curious about it

Can you do Manes by Mell's method? I am a 2a/b wavy and I use her method with the perfect Haircare brush (instead of denman) and take bigger vertical sections. I'd be curious to see if it works as well for your hair as it does for mine.😊

Can you do the opposite, doing scrunch/style techniques with 'no' product? by no product i would accept a leave in conditioner/protein. maybe you've already done this and i missed it.

Courtney did a product free one, a while ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHy3pqB_hLaLadU. But quite a few videos of Courtney’s start off with her saying “this is day___ product free hair” like she does at the beginning of this video.
