Thank you for your video. You showed that it is safe and easy to remove this contraption. When the new gas can arrived, I showed your video to my mother-in-law and while I was looking for a flat head screw driver, she pulled it out with her bare hand in a couple of seconds! :)

the tab on the side of the cap is a child proof latch so the can't get the cap off. the screen inside of can also prevents you from pumping too fast at the gas station. yes the 2 1/2 gal can is the same as 5 gal.

The screen is a flame arrestor. Something to keep fire from traveling into the can, not something to keep you from pumping too fast.

That screed is a flame mediation device to stop flames from reaching into the can. Most gas cans don’t come with it though so… meh.

hmm mine leaks , the brown o ring design looks suspect. I don't have that flame mitigation device (you are calling it a filter), I might try to get a hold of one and install it, looks like it would help the brown o ring seal.

Be careful prying out the screen when you’re prying down on the rim where the orings seat or it will distort it and leak..luckily it didn’t.

That gizmo is a "Flash" supressor. Keeps you from blowing up and burning yourself to death. The 'California Thing' is a safety pawl designed to keep the lid from unscrewing accidentally thereby keeping you from being blown up or burned to death. Obviously, you can remove these safety devices as you wish. But you (or your survivors) won't be able to sue anyone when you get major 3rd degree burns from the explosion. Just a little friendly reminder! 😉

I own three of these. Takes over three min to pour 5 gal in my truck. Needs a separate vent installed. One in nozzle is not enough. Also in hot weather they swell big time. Not worth it.
