Nice diagnosis. I once had a similar problem on an old Volvo (LH2.4, 60-2 flywheel) They stuck in a new flywheel + clutch. Crank+NoStart... still spark + fuel, no errors. Spark was fired at the wrong time because the flywheel was clocked way off. 8 flywheel bolts = 8 possible clockings...🤦♂️yes, they had to do the job all over again.

jfv65; You're spot on with your diagnosis on that Volvo (LH2.4 60-2 flywheel). I had a similar issue years ago with an Alfa Romeo Spyder 2.0 l I-4. It almost drove me up the wall trying to figure this out. Like you said the flywheel was clocked incorrectly so the spark was way out of time. It caused several mechanics to just give up and one in particular left the trade altogether. So yes I've seen issues of this sort time and time again. I've repaired motor vehicles that even the dealers gave up on several times and yes I dealt with a Chrysler product with a very similar issue where the engine refused to start after being replaced. Everything has to be a perfect match or no go,just the way it is.

Hey Ivan, I just had the same problem with a 2006 Chevy Equinox 3.4L. I swapped the engine from a 2007 and every thing bolted up exactly. Then I noticed the cam sensor plug was different so I tried swapping the sensor but it was physically different. So I then swapped the connector with the 2007 because they had the same wires. Turns out the cam in the 2007 engine is physically different than the 2006. Also the the crank sensor looked different but the plugs were identical. After connecting everything I tried starting it but there was no spark what so ever. The 2007 3.4L engine has a different cam and crank reluctors wheels and so was totally incompatible. I finally had to re-swap for a 2006 engine and it cranked right up. Only a year difference and they were totally different.

I just did a 2013 Jeep Compass that had the front end replaced after a wreck that included the engine and transmission. After whoever did that work the motor ran but was like it was in limp mode with any throttle input and the X-Mas tree would start flashing everything on the dash so it sat for over 2 years being shuffled from shop to shop until I finally looked at it. The scan tool showed the intake air temperature to be - 70 or something like that and after erasing the long list of codes it was the only dtc that would set immediately. I began with power and grounds and found the main sensor ground for the E.C.M. was grounded to a painted surface along with a few other corrosion issues so corrected them and the temp sensor reported 168 air temp so I replaced it and got good results. A test drive was better but the right rear wheel speed was not reading and was a broken magnet in the bearing so replaced that and customer is happy after all these years.

I knew the direction this was going before I even watched the entire video. I have seen a TON of people get slid with engine swaps. Everything fitting and bolting up and donor engine from the same body style, it doesn't always mean it will work. Dodge/Jeep 3.7s and 4.7s this happens all the time. I can think of a particularly nasty one, 2002 Dakota and Durango was a mid-year change over. So a motor from one 02 wont always work in another 02. The easy way to tell on that, early models have a PCM with 3 plugs, and later models have a PCM with 4 plugs. They are not interchangeable.

Yeppers, and speaking of '02, Ford Exploders had a wiring change mid year going to the 4*4 control module under the dash. The 2 modules (early build/late build) will physically plug into the other under the dash, BUT, you start the veh and you suddenly have a fire under the dash in the incorrect module. That was fun to figure out. AND, to make it more fun, it wasn't just mid model year, it was mid month change down to the day. Example: the module from a car built on 2/3/02 wouldn't work in one built on 2/4/02.....

It's the same as how my 2002 Model series 1 Holden VY SS Commodore is fitted with a 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine but the later 6 litre Chevrolet L76 V8 engine which is found in the Holden series 2 VZ SS Commodore in about 2006 then it was fitted into all of the VE SS Commodores all of the way up to the series 1 VF SS Commodores. My point is even after buying the extension wiring harnesses for the Knock sensors & the camshaft position sensor the Delph PCM will not run it unless the 3 bolt LS1 camshaft & matching reluctor wheel which is the top camshaft sprocket is fitted & the camshaft trigger wheel in the L76 V8 engine is swapped over to the LS1 V8 crankshaft trigger wheel which is a big job because the crankshaft has to be removed to swap it over. If it's a VE series 2 SS Commodore L76 V8 engine the oil pump realistically needs to be swapped over to a lower volume oil pump & the AFM (Active fuel management) or DOD (displacement on demand) delete kit including standard LS7 hydraulic lifters needs to be fitted. If it's an L76 V8 engine which is fitted into up to a VE series 1 Commodore (pre 2009) model then it already has been ordered from Chevrolet with that fitted into it. So, anything is possible but it's easier for me to keep the tuned LS1 V8 engine which was tuned to put out as much power as the 6 litre V8 engine when I first got it but it's tuned to put out more power now. The difference is that the 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine is run by a Delphi PCM & the 6 litre Chevrolet L76 V8 engine is run by a Bosch PCM in the Commodore in Australia so they're both different !

Ls1 pcm can run ls2/6.0, crank trigger could be fixed with a signal converter or a better solution upgrade to an aftermarket pcm like Holly terminator, you neen to extend your knock sensors harness and change the cam sproket to late gen4 4x tooth instead your oe 2x

As soon as engine swap was mooted, alarm bells went off in the design department. Nothing stays the same as is with new models

Welcome to another episode of the Forensic Auto Tech.... At the crime scene - There is a Buick that wont start. There is no internet service and it is snowing. Will Ivan be able to piece together the clues and solve this mystery?

Always verify any model year or mid-year changes before putting a huge paperweight in

Hey, Ivan! Thought you might appreciate this. It’s about small engine work but I thought of you and your electrical diagnostic skills. I just learned something today that would cause the same symptoms as a failing coil when its laminations are starting to come apart at operating temps and the engine shuts down. I was reminded of Arch’s Garage and a couple of coil testing videos he did. Apparently a failed spark plug can cause the exact same symptom. It resistance tests fine when out of the engine but gets wonky and fails when it gets to temp. James Condon did a generator video three years ago and finally found the cause of engine shutdown when he put what seemed like a good plug in his vice and heated it to operating temp with a torch, then tested it. Sure enough, it was fine before heating but after heating resistance values were all over the map until it cooled down again. Have you ever seen this before? I wonder how many times people have swapped out coils but didn’t know this was what actually caused the issue and it still wasn’t solved with a good coil. 👍🔧🧰
