I'd have to disagree, I've learned so much from being tattooed. Things like what's super uncomfortable or what will shorten a persons tolerance, what will get them over the line for longer session, what parts of the body take more fussing over to heal, which parts hurt more, how extra pillows and positioning can assist with longer sessions, how pressure of wiping or how gentle you are can help a client sit for longer, how life style, occupation, age will effect the healing process. Being more in touch with how to maintain modesty when tattooing more intimate areas and what clothing to wear , how to work with your client to get them across the finish line.. sooo many things I've learned from being in the chair that's prepared me better to care for my clients .. 🤷♀️ I'm sure these things could be learned without it but there's no better way than to experience it yourself. No hate ❤ just my experience .. ❤

Most tattoo artists have bad tattoos because either they practiced on them selves before they actually got good or were young and the thought of a tattoo jst amazed them (which is the case for me) that at a young age they started trying to make homemade machines then tattoo themselves which is why I have 3 bad tattoos but it's also a reminder from where I came from now I am a pretty dope lettering artist but back then nowhere near at all artists will only get better over time

I've just found your Chanel dude .. even giving advice on how to keep up the stamina to sit a day session, I've learned by being tattooed by someone who dry wipes and or with a lot of pressure, further traumatised my skin and reduces my tolerance to sit longer so I'm super aware of doing it to others. My body is full of old injuries and I have shitty spine (as we all do) but it helps to be aware of clients injuries so you can position them without agrivating a shoulder, hip or so on. Having insight as to how their life style may effect their healing and being able to give advice accordingly... all the things. I was a very heavily tattooed nurse before I started tattooing. you are very narrow minded, there are a lot of conditions that prevent you from getting tattoos, for example psoriasis, a skin disease that can cover up to 90% of your body. and maybe you love tattooing but you know, passion for tattooing won't make it better, or a blood clotting, haemophilia? theres a lot of factors, but still you can show your respect and passion about it even if you cannot get one. how about women that cannot born a child but love parenting them? do you have to born a child to be a good mother?
@Zombosis4 жыл бұрын
Psoriasis is not an excuse. I happen to know people who -have- almost entire-body psoriasis coverage, and they're still tattooed. As for haemophilia, in its milder forms its situationally-treatable (and thus not a barrier to getting tattooed) and in extreme forms would preclude the individual from working in tattooing anyways, for the needle-stick risks. I‘m quite annoyed with all the comments that say it‘s no issue when a tattooer has no tattoos him/herself. First: For me it‘s not so much the pain-part that they couldn‘t relate to; they literally don‘t know how it is to have tattoos on your body for the rest of your life. You decide on something you‘ll look at for decades - and sometimes it wasn‘t the best decision but - at least for a great majority - that often is part of getting tattooed. And when I‘m old and wrinkled I‘ll be proud of my tattooed body. Second: Thank you for mentioning the much older culture of tattoing seen e.g. on Ötzi! There is much more to tattoing and getting tattooed if you have all it‘s ancient history in mind. It seems that all over the world and througout ages cultures were drawn to mark there skins; either as protection, part of a ritual, therapeutical treatment (as seen on Ötzi), and so on…. And if you don‘t have any yourself you‘re kind of closing yourself up to a huge part of it‘s culture. To sum up I think it‘s a pitty not to be tattooed as a tattooer - because it would give them a much deeper understanding of what they are doing.

random question, if you were to put numbing cream on in the spot you are going to get a tattoo before you get it done, will it affect the tattoo?
@Zombosis4 жыл бұрын
Hey Lauren--- honestly, I should do an entire episode on numbing agents. Generally speaking, you can use them, but you need to be very careful which numbing creme/gel you use, and you have to accept that it -may- alter your skin in such a way as to give you a bad heal--- which just means having to touchup/redo the tattoo, so its not really a 'gain' in the long run. Plus, they are diminishing-return options... meaning, they dont last all that long (especially the topical ones meant to be used beforehand, like Emla) and so again it might not be the easy answer you're seeking. For me personally, I use them only in extreme cases to buy a little more time right near the end of particularly intense and long sessions.

Happy you made this video. I saw your other one and was too thinking that it seemed irrelevant to be tattooed to tattoo. However, you sold me on two points. The fact that empathy is only felted by also having the same experiences. You simply can’t relate if you never had. You can only judge or have an opinion, to which really doesn’t matter if your not able to relate. And secondly, the culture. I would hate to not be apart of something I’m not. It’s too fake nor does it make any sense. I’ve been practicing for about a year on fake skin and some parts on friends who trust me. And was interested in possibly picking up a apprenticeship to learn more and get better in skill. I don’t want it for the money since I already have a good paying career. But I want to simply do good work, just to be proud of what I can do. Nonetheless, I’m realizing I got more homework to do before my first step into the tattoo culture. Thanks for this valuable content. Keep it up, your opinions are very interesting for those who don’t have a clue about the tattoo world.

I would take that as a personal challenge. Ive tattooed clients who are at extreme risk of keloid and they've been fine. However, if if you were to try to get a tattoo, and it keloided up and became a mass of scarring, that would still show that you *tried*. That your passion exists for it. You would be able to show a potential client that you tried to go the distance and it just didnt work for you to get covered. Thats still a hell of a lot better than the petulant insistence that you "just dont need to be tattooed" to be tattoo artist that so many people getting into this are showing.

I fully understand being wierded out by a tattoo artist that has no tattoos. They kinda feel like marriage counsellors who've never been married. There's a level of understanding that you honestly just can't have without experiencing something yourself. However, that has just about NO bearing whatsoever on a tattoo artist's SKILL, or their ability to give you a good tattoo. You wouldn't turn down a surgeon just because they've never been operated on. Personal experience is far less reliable than the collected experiences of several individuals (i.e. clients). Every career is 'exploited' by the people who have said career. I could go on about pretty much every point in this video; none of them are convincing. There's just no objetive reason to not like or to mistrust 'no-tattoo tattoo artists'. Honestly all you had to say was "tattoo artists without tattoos are just kinda odd, and they're probably cowards, so I wouldn't get a tattoo from one" and I'd have agreed with you.

First of all, i agree with you on the subject matter, because a tattoo artist without tattoos to me is someone without real passion, probably an art student that's good at drawing but doesn't know how to make money with art so he gets into tattooing. BUT, the argument of "you can't know if you haven't experienced it" is not really true: Pain tolerance is absolutely subjective, so just because a tattoo hurt you in some way you can't really say how much it will hurt someone else, scientifically speaking, the most painful tattoos are the ones on body parts that are more sensitive due to higher nerves concentration. Also, about the healing of a tattoo, there some objective science behind it and that's the only truth, no product works the same on everyone, so even here personal experience isn't really an argument.

The logic of only having validity if you have personally experienced something is a little flawed? I’m sure there are many excellent surgeons, skinny pastry chiefs, and sober bartenders who could still be experts, helpful and amazing at what they do, without having to have experienced every aspect of their craft firsthand. Since tattoo is a visual Art, I generally would look at the work they’ve done, not the Art on their body? That said, Culturally and Community wise, you won’t have much credibility unless you have gone through “The Rite of Passage”, and joined the Tribe.

Like this guy (who's pretty much not an entitled millenial) did? kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6WThYWYitZ5mqc And, is it actually impossible to not know how to heal a tattoo without getting one first?Because that's like saying that a docter can't cure horrible diseases without being a survivor of those diseases first. I also doubt that all tattoo artist already have all of the types of tattoos that their clients want. A tattoo artist could have sleves, upper back, chest and ribs tattoos, but then thay might not have tattoos on their lower back, their thighs, their face, their neck, and then one client wants precisily that that they don't have. Also, don't blind painters who have never seen colours exist? Wasn't Bethoveen deaf? Look, i'm ignorant about all this, so this are genuine questions of mine. What a ridiculous "culture". If you have to have tattoos to be respected by tattoo peers, then you maybe don't want their respect. This gatekeeping behavior is so childish and immature. People from all sorts of life backgrounds might want a tattoo or become tattoo artists. Pretending like its one thing for one kind of people is pretty disgusting. As far as a tattoo-less artist, there is so many things which a person can be passionate about when it comes to tattooing, from the appreciation of art and design, continually improving and mastering a skill, working with people, using their hard earned skill in a professional setting, autonomy, building relationship with clients and making people happy etc... Saying that they're somehow less passionate or hacks is simply ridiculous. And this denigration of people with different backgrounds such as fine arts and other by classifying them as failures in their field for wanting to do tattoos as if though there can't be any possible reason why they might want to do that is so primitive and tribal. Pure example of creating separation between "us" and "them" as a way of group dismissal without the need to evaluate individuals. Childish and cowardly.

Almost every tattoo was done for a _reason_ to do with my (personal) life and marked a moment or aspect of my life that I wanted to dwell on, be reminded of...mark etc... So the act of getting that tattoo done, was very ritualistic - much like meditation or some religious practice... While i don't sit particularly on any side of the fence for tattoo artists having or not having tattoos... I guess, 'ritual' would imply, if you're going to perform a ritual on someone, you should have participated in it, yourself, at least ONCE! 😉 ^ Comment for algorithm + 👍 'd #Paxus Rating: ☆☆☆☆
