I like his spin on the titles, makes you think...however here are George Lucas' reasons (as best to my knowledge)

Episode IV: Return of the Jedi
Episode V: The Force Awakens
Episode VI: The Last Jedi

Episode IX: The Phantom Menace
While it's a clever spin and it makes sense from a casual perspective, I think I understand why George named it the reason he did, so I'd love to debate that side of it with you today.

What I find really interesting is that every single title is basically telling you the end of the movie. The Phantom Menace - Only at the end we know that there are two Sith, and that only one of them got killed. So, the other one is still a hidden threat. Like a phantom. Attack of the Clones - Self-explanatory. We only see the clones fight at the end of the movie, where they are literally attacking the arena on Geonosis. Revenge of the Sith - Again, not much to say here. At the end the Sith have arisen and defeated the Jedi. They finally got their revenge, thousands of years in the making. A New Hope - While being in constant fear of the Empire, the Rebellion won their first major battle by destryoing the Empire's biggest weapon ever. And it was thanks to one young promising man, the one that gave the Rebels new hope for their future. The Empire Strikes Back - Now, you could say this happens at the start of the movie, and you'd be right, but it also applies to the end. The only movie of the OT where the bad guys won at the end. Return of the Jedi - Pretty obvious again. In the final part of the film Luke only became a Jedi, once he confronted Vader, rejected the Sith, and brought his father back from the Dark Side, and returned as a Jedi. The Jedi, as in the group, return. It's not only Anakin, or Luke, it's Jedi in the PLURAL. The rest... ehh, I don't really care, and they don't make sense anyway.

Its still true for the sequels, heres the short version. The Force Awakens: Only at the end does Rey awaken her true power and defeat Kylo. The Last Jedi: By the end only Rey is left, the last disciple of Luke who is still a Jedi. The Rise of Skywalker: after killing off her family Rey steals the name of Kylo's.

Also, I’ve always notice there is a nice “poetry” style naming to the titles that mirrors the original trilogy to the prequels. This way, the titles are like this: A new hope VS Phantom menace The empire strikes back VS Attack of the clones Return of the Jedi VS Revenge of the Sith

It's like opposites. A New Hope is the Jedi slowly gaining a foothold, while TPM is the Sith slowly doing the same thing. AotC is the Republic striking back, and ESB is the opposite. RotJ is the Jedi implementing themselves again, while RotS is the Sith regaining control. It's great.

Fun Fact: In German Return of the Jedi is translated as Return of the Jedi Knights, meaning it’s plural. They aren't more or less meaningful then the other movies: Attack of the Clones is deep because the clones Attack? The Empire Strikes back is deep because the Empire strikes back in that movie? Revenge of the Sith is deep because the Sith take revenge and kill the Jedi? The only Star Wars Film Titels that are deep are Return of the Jedi and the Rise of Skywalker in my opinion. A large part of the Star Wars Fanbase is just like: Rant about the Sequels because of the problems they have and if they aren't any problems left? Invent new Problems!
