Beautiful video showing organic no till. How many units of nitrogen you expect from the alfalfa? Does your farm do plant tissue analysis during the growing season?
@farmingwithcarp85514 жыл бұрын
We are hoping to see around 140 lbs of N from the alfalfa.

i missed it but do you roll the alfalfa after planting? i went into alfalfa that did not die and i think had we had water it would have worked.
@farmingwithcarp85513 жыл бұрын
We rolled after we planted. It doesn’t kill the alfalfa, just sets it back to help the corn get up and through. At least that’s the intent

Why wouldn’t you harvest alfalfa before you plant. Was it not tall enough? Or using it for compost by the planted seed?

Yes. We wanted it out there for the planted seed.

How did this crop turn out?
@LtColDaddy713 жыл бұрын
Up until 12 yrs ago, I was over thinking big time and roller crimping on the front while I planted, and everything was getting tangled up in the planter. As equip upgrades came, I thought I’d try and space out spending the money over a few years by PLANTING into standing cover just that 1 year. BOY I WISH ID FIGURED OUT HOW MUCH BETTER THAT WORKS EARLIER! Even in tall covers! I think the non organic conventional cover crop guys might yield a little better by burning it down 1st, but that’s even more time, $, fuel, and lower price all in one.
@farmingwithcarp85513 жыл бұрын
We still crimp before and crimp after depending on the situation. We much prefer to plant before in the tall cover and then crimp. But I still think we are better off than the guys burning it all down. That’s just my opinion.

How did you manage the weeds in the first field you planted?

We used our rowmow to help alleviate some of the weed pressure until the canopy eventually closed.

@@farmingwithcarp8551 Is row mowing your primary form of weeds control on your organic acres? Are you 100% notill?
@farmingwithcarp85513 жыл бұрын
@@pfeatherston7276 We are completely no till. The cover crops are our main source of weed control, but it doesn’t work out in every case. But the rowmow is one of our sources for weed control.

@@farmingwithcarp8551Very cool, I have 40 organic acres and would like to be more regenerative. Have any tips or suggestions for organic notill? Where did you get the rowmow or the parts to build the rowmow?
@farmingwithcarp85513 жыл бұрын
@@pfeatherston7276 cover crops are very important for it. Timing is everything with them. The earlier you can get them out in the fall the better. We have shortened our maturity dates on corn and soybeans to try and accomplish this. As far as the romow, it was a custom build and we had a third party involved on it. We used an old row cultivator frame and units. Then engineers made the brackets to bolt to the unit which house the motor and blades.
