Sam Mendes was a worthy successor to Campbell with Skyfall, Fukunaga is a worthy successor to Mendes

@@K0m30ng On balance I’m gonna vote no, Timothy Mendes’ greatest contribution was in restoring a sense of Britishness to Bond by setting so much of the action in England and Scotland, the Tennyson quote at the select committee, the casting of Fiennes, Harris and Whishaw etc. But his treatment of Bond girls leaves a lot to be desired, whether it’s the ugly use and disposal of Severine, making M a bad shot, or keeping Madeleine so cold and distant which proves to be a burden on the romance. Bringing Thomas Newman with him from his pre-Bond films was also a huge mistake because that action music is so diffuse and lightweight. Fukunaga finds the balance between retaining the class of the previous films while allowing everyone to be emotionally accessible. I love the approach he has with the women in his film, that he takes actual psychological interest in Madeleine which in turn gets a fantastic performance from Seydoux, and of course bringing an action veteran like Hans Zimmer on board was just the icing on the cake. To make a satisfying sequel to both Casino Royale and Spectre was no easy task and I thought he navigated those different tones and plots beautifully.
@K0m30ng2 жыл бұрын
@@PurushaDesa To be fair, that's mostly the writer's problem more than the director. Mendes had no writing contribution whatsoever so blame on that for the writers who also wrote Spectre and No Time To Die. And for making M a bad shot, as for Judi Dench, i disagree, Dench's M felt like a mother figure to Bond, he and his writers managed to make her a bit down to earth and not making too cheeky. But one thing Skyfall did better than No time To Die was the villain, i love Rami Malek but in NTTD i just found him a bit miscast, reminded me of Riz Ahmed in Venom, fantastic actor but they could've pick a far better intimading actor for the role. I wish Christoph Waltz was actually the main villain in NTTD. Yeah, i do know that he was wasted but make Ernst be the main villain for NTTD working together with Savin would've been much better. Malek felt a bit short as Savin compare to what Javier Bardem brought as Silva or even Dave Bautista in Spectre. And the theme song, i love Billie Eillish's No Time To Die but Adele's Skyfall was really a gamechanger for the Bond theme song and even won an Oscar for it. Mendes and Fukunaga's direction for their movies were great, they made a beautiful looking movie (Skyfall had Roger Deakins as the cinematographer dammit, another reason why Mendes is a worthy successor of Campbell), wide shots of action sequences, but from a storytelling standpoint, it's more the writer's problem in which Fukunaga was involved with NTTD. It was a good ending for Craig's Bond but the villain could've been a lot better. So yeah Fukunaga did better with the Bond girls, Mendes did better with the Bond villains, Skyfall's theme song, and the cinematography

@@K0m30ng I see where you’re coming from although Fukanaga taking a much more hands on approach with the writing process is itself a greater strength. (He’s clear about in his interviews that he wouldn’t wanna work any other way in his projects.) I’m glad you brought the M/Bond dynamic up. I’ve always preferred their relationship to play out as two headbutting colleagues who in a slightly different timeline have each other’s jobs. The mother/son angle I found very odd and weird for a Bond film much more so than any of the admittedly controversial risks Spectre or No Time to Die take.

Overall, a good Film. But it does have it's flaws: The ending is dumb - You DON'T kill off James Bond. You just don't. That's the point of Him. He always get's away. It would have made more sense for DC's Bond to become an Instructor for new 00 agents. That would have been a fitting ending. Although I can understand him sacrificing himself for Maldeine and his daughter. But still, He deserved better. Safin's motivation to spread Heracles wasn't really convincing; and then the film is kinda hectic. Where Sam Mendes took his Time to establish mood in various scenes with patience (like the Sailing Boat approaching Hashima or Bond meeting Mr. White in the Lodge), pretty much all the scenes in NTTD were handled relatively short. Shot, shot, shot. Next scene. Take your Time! It wouldn't have hurt if the film had been 10 or 15 minutes longer, as long as it may be.

And in what world did this film receive generally good reviews? I’d rather say it received mixed reviews with the majority finding the movie to be rather bad. This just ended it. This film is the result of a lot of bad decisions starting with the two Writers from hell aka Neil Purvis and Robert Wade, a director that doesn’t understand shit about what makes a great Bond film and Hans Zimmer who only knows one style of music which is hyperbolic brass screaming and overly pathetic string whining.
