Bond (Daniel Craig) makes his way through Mexico City’s Day of the Dead celebrations in the opening scene from SPECTRE (2015). Director Sam Mendes said: “One of the things that’s said about the Day of the Dead celebrations is that ‘los muertos vivos están’ - ’The dead are alive.’ That has a direct bearing on our story.”

Yeah, I kind of get pissed off by that. I mean, CDMX is almost as grey during good part of the year as London and yet they always paint it sepia. I was born and raised in Mexico CIty and we get rain a good part of the year (this year being a notable exception BTW) Cheers!

The opening sequence in Spectre is a culmination of several, similar scenes from previous Bond films. There is the Dia De Los Muertos scene which resembles the Mardi Gras scene in "Live and Let Die." The rooftop sniper scene is reminiscent of the sniper scene where Timothy Dalton's Bond attempts to assassinate Sanchez in "Licence to Kill." And, finally, the helicopter fight sequence has elements of Roger Moore's Bond in "For Your Eyes Only," during which he battles to gain control of the aerial vehicle as piloted by Blofeld.

This was one of the best opening scenes in not just a Bond movie but any action film. I enjoyed Specter. It isn't anywhere near as abysmal as some are trying to claim. Roger Moore and Connery produced several ghastly films between them that were incredibly bad to the point You had to wonder if Parody was the true intent of them. Specter may not have been as seamless as Skyfall but overall it checked off a lot of boxes and kept you in suspense right up until the end. Out of the 5 movies Craig participated in 4 were very entertaining work with 3 of them( Casino Royal, Skyfall and No Time to Die)being downright brilliant. Craig brought a Soul to Bond and portrayed him with a substance and depth that neither Connery, Moore and the Wooden Brosnan were capable of doing. Craig will certainly be missed because he raises the bar considerably.

Depends. The reason behind the decision was that cinemas in major markets like China, Japan, and South Korea fully shut down. If that is not the case in November they might as well release the movie. The damage is already done in any case, and postponing it further would only make sense if some major markets are still shut down at the time. That can, of course, change daily.

@William Guzman first, La llorona is a myth/ urban legend. It's not really a witch and some people claim it was an event that really happened. Again, just stop saying everything is the same. Second, the skulls you see aren't even la llorona 🙄, that's called a catrina, meant to criticize the high society and upper class of the old time as cruel people unti Diego Rivera created a mural popularizing the catrina symbol, a skeleton dressed in fancy clothes. Hence why the scene is filled with people with skulls painted and in black tie attire.

Spectre left a lot to be desired but you can’t fault it’s technical wizardry. I wouldn’t expect anything less from director Sam mendes. The sound editing in this film is remarkable. I love how the Mexican theme converts seamlessly into bond’s traditional theme as soon as Craig steps out onto the ledge. As he walks confidently towards his target the bond theme expands. What an incredible opening sequence; visual storytelling that transitions into an action sequence whilst reintroducing bond to the audience. Filmmaking to perfection.

Thats the Double standard of Hollywood.... The scene in Africa, India, n south America have all Yellow filtered. It signifies that this place are either hostile or impoverished.. If u look at Extraction (Chris Hemsworth) series. it used yellow filter heavily...

As someone whose first Bond movie in a theatre was Moonraker, I really like how the Craig Bond's dalliances are generally for a purpose. I also like how this opening establishes the skull-headed cane of the type he uses to bludgeon the SPECTRE agent at the heliocopter.

Bond has some of the best opening scenes in history. Casino Royale which is basically his first kill after being promoted to 00 status. Quantum of Solace shows the brilliance of that Aston Martin. And Spectre.

The parkour chase in the opening of Casino Royale is legendary. Everything looked so real and big, yet it was the BEGINNING of the movie….I don’t see many movies doing that often anymore.

@@owilliams1031 Actually art imitates life... It was the Chicano artists in Los Angeles that made the parade a tradition. 1973 was the first large Día de los Muertos procession along a 2-mile stretch of Caesar Chavez Avenue (back then, Brooklyn) to Evergreen Cemetery. You don't believe me? Then google arts and culture, and you will find the actual pictures of the parade. Look for the Day of the Dead 77 Procession! You will see the actual pictures of the parade. fair credit should be given to the original creators of the parade/tradition, and it wasn't James Bond 007.

Fun fact: There were no Day of the Dead parades before this movie! It used to be a private family affair, kind of like Thanksgiving with dead relatives. The writers of this movie didn't know this, and thought there was a parade involved.

Craig was/is a beast as Bond. Always liked his interpretation of the character. Really wish there had been a much better endeavor in the writing department though that was effortlessly started in Casino Royale. They just seemed to struggle with putting a solid, entire film together after that.

I hate the filter on this scene, the day when they roll the scene it was cloudy (more in the helicopter part). And for the people who don't know, since the release of this movie we do a parade about the day of dead, with more traditional costumes and dancing, if you visit México on that days you can't lose it. :)

Craig: "You know, if those last movies all that jumping, falling, plummeting and slamming into things really hurt." Director: "Ok, we'll have you casually stroll down the roof to your objective." Craig: "Soft parkour. I like it." Also, you know you're in Mexico when the b*tch that wants to bang you calmly says "where are you going?" when you're casually walking out the WINDOW WITH A GUN, rather than "WTF! Why do you have a GUN! and why are you going out the f*CKING window!?!"
