No Toilet Paper? Here's What To Do!

Here's what to do if you've been shopping and all the toilet paper has been sold out. The supplies you need are probably already in your house, so this is a low-cost way to get by without those paper products. Also, if you're looking for a way to go zero waste, this will take you one step further!

Us older folks know about that and aren't as offended by the thought. Our kids got use to the disposable stuff so don't have the stomach for it. They forget their bottoms were taken care of that way. This is the older generation's time to shine ! Now if the younger generation will just listen we can help them through this.

Hi Judy, I am old enough to remember cloth diapers being swished up and down in the commode to get the worst of it out and then soaked in a diaper pail until wash day or until we had enough for a wash load of clothes or just until they were needed ASAP . It really wasn''t that bad . I was 8 years old when my baby sister was born and I did almost all of her diapers and her care . At 8 years old I could do it so I know that any adult who is out of toilet paper can do it. I did not get in on the toilet paper craze and just couldn't understand it . I knew it was the least of my worries. Thanks for posting your video , many may have not thought about doing the whole washable, reusable TP.

We used to change diaper s when I was younger. We would have a damp wash cloth next nearby remove soiled dia per use cloth to clean the baby. These were old cloth diapers, we would slosh out the soiled diapers and wash cloths in the tolit , then finalized in the sink. Every thing's clean. Hang up outside clothes line. Done ps I've forgotten how to fold the diapers scence then.1972- 76 somewhere in there

@@johnabbot1585 I did something similar when my boys were babies. Younger people have never had to deal with such things so it's hard for them to revert to the older methods. Excellent idea. This is exactly how we handled cloth diapers when our children were very young years ago. Set up two small buckets, one for initial swishing in water and rinse, the other for soaking a few hours in soapy water. Rinse it all out in the shower. Then run it through the clothes washer and dryer. A hot dryer will sterilize everything. Save toilet paper, save money, and save the trees.

@@JudiintheKitchen The case it that a virus has never been isolated in the history of mankind. Then people should ask themselves; how can a test then say if you are positive or negative for a virus? That is simply impossible. Tomorrow the Patriot Act extension is expiring, so I assume Trump, will declare national emergency to implement Marshal law. Bill Gates said in a TED talk years ago that to reduce the human population vaccines was an important tool. I wonder what kind of parasites they have in those shoots. Would never give blood sample or take a test, nor a vaccine. Then they would need to take my life. Seems like the growing elderly population are being to expensive and since all nations are businesses they cut costs. Such a shame! If elderly people stopped taking the flu shoot they would live much longer. We have a lifespan of 120-140 years, but thanks to modern technology we have been able to reduce that to around 75-80 years.

Take squeeze type empty shampoo or conditioner bottle. Fill with water and a few drops of liquid soap. Wonderful little bidet! Keep next to toilet and make one for each family member!!! Been doing this as a helper tool for a few years!! CLEANER than plain paper!!

Thank you. Here is what I've been doing. I am only using toilet tissue for number 2. Number 1: I put some very diluted warm sudsy water in a small plastic squeeze bottle and rinse then wipe dry with a face cloth. I hand wash the wash cloth each day with soap and hang dry and reuse. If I had no toilet tissue, I would do the same but have another wash cloth for number 2 and just hand wash it immediately after use and hang dry. This is what people did everyday before tissue was available. It's no big deal, probably more sanitary for our tush and better for the environment. All is good.

Back in the late 60's I visited with friends who, while they did have indoor plumbing, water was quite expensive so it was only used over night. Daytime called for the outhouse and the good old Sears catalogue came in very handy.

I was blessed, with what I considered a sort of "gag gift" at the time(a yr ago)...a bidet!! It remained in the box, in my closet until recently. I use a "poor man's bidet" by recycling dish-washing bottles or other plastic bottles like mustard or ketchup. What you are looking for is anything that will squirt water. After cleaning them thoroughly, fill them with water or water with a little vinegar or witch hazel and use this to spray/rinse the area. Then the cloth wipes become drying towels, and very little, if any, fecal material is on the wipes. I further mitigate any smell or other unpleasant thing by rinsing/pre cleaning anything remaining by pre-washing with the soap and water that I use to wash my hands anyway. This more than doubles hand washing time ,and that is actually a very good thing. I use similar cotton muslin cloths to dry after urinating. In all, I have reduced my toilet paper usage by a significant amount.

I always helped my big sister take care of her 6 children. There were no disposable diapers then. I learned how to wash out dirty diapers in the toilet and then put them in the diaper pail. It was a fact of life and we were always washing and folding the cloth diapers. Nothing to it. Today’s youngers have no idea how to deal with most everything. I grew up in a different world.

Good description on how to use cloth wipes. I used cloth diapers so it makes perfect sense to me. Also, when I washed diapers, I emptied the diaper pail, with water, detergent and used diapers into the washer, I then put in spin cycle, then ran through a rinse cycle, then washed in regular wash cycle. Less handling of dirty diapers. And definitely rinse the solid soiled cloths in clean toilet.!

Back in those days, babies used to wear cloth diapers and they were washed out properly and reused. We need to get back to looking at alternatives and this is a very good way of saving on toilet paper and using when there is no toilet paper available in the stores. As long they are soaked and thoroughly washed, its perfectly safe to use.

Ive used the personal cloth method for years now. I find the huge amount of waste and wiping with chemically treated paper to make TP white ridiculous not to mention expensive. I only use cloths for for urine but this has cut our use of TP about 90%. In this virus epidemic, we have just used 1 roll of TP in a 1.5 months. I use cut up old wash cloths and old tee shirts. Id use flannel if I could find it. I have never had any issues. I just keep the clean cloths in a cute basket and the used ones go directly into the laundry basket. This is much healthier than TP plus saves money and storage. Do not use bleach to clean the cloths. You certainly don’t want that on your delicate skin. Washing soda and laundry detergent works fine. I never ever experience odors from using this method. Thanks for your no nonsense approach to this matter!

Beth W I dont use for fecal at this time.. that might change. Lets just say there are better times than others to use this method for fecal and so I would anticipate a need for some TP. If that changes, I would certainly use the method outlined in this video. My laundry is right around the corner from our bathrooms. In fact the laundry room is nicely kept/decorated as it is used as our main entrance off the driveway. When I am done using a DRY cloth for urine, it immediately goes on top of the laundry. My laundry is typically not piled up because as soon as it peeks over the antique basket, its time to put a load in. I do use washing soda (we don’t use bleach bc we have a septic) along with a gentle detergent in warm water as we have sort of hard well water and it keeps whites white without bleach. There is never ever an odor. Not even in humid weather whereas wet cloths could get smelly. The home made cloths don’t get near as wet as you would think. They also seem to dry out fast. In spring, summer and fall I even hang these out to dry 1/2 the time as the sun is a natural sanitizer. I have experienced zero downsides. On the odd occasion when l laundry peeks over the basket, I toss a cute cotton cloth to pretty up the look. No-one suspects a thing! 😉. I will say in times where you might have a cold or flu and find you are urinating more often, you’ll want to have lots of these on hand. I use a lingerie bag to launder the cloths in.

Great info. This is what I used to do with cloth baby diapers before putting them into the diaper pail. Not difficult to do. Because deforestation is a problem we're all going to have to recon with eventually, I switched to homemade, 2-ply, 8" flannel wipes years ago. I use them when I empty my bladder; for more extensive cleanups, I still use toilet paper. I keep a sealed plastic container next to the commode (no odor) and launder them regularly with the loads I routinely sanitize, anyway -- towels, skivvies, sheets, pajamas, etc. I use homemade laundry soap, and sanitize each load with oxygen bleach. Everything comes out perfectly clean, fresh and sweet-smelling. I believe they're more sanitary than paper, because they're more absorbent and don't fall apart in my hand. I also made flannel wipes for kitchen use -- a different weight and color, but the same size; they're washed and sanitized routinely with my dark loads. Those people who used to laugh at me aren't laughing now! I've saved a fortune, probably saved more than a few trees, and I don't worry about constant exposure to the toxic chemicals used in toilet paper production. Good for the earth, good for my health, good for my checkbook -- works for me!

I began that same process a couple of weeks ago, because our supply of TP may run out before stores are restocked. While I’m so careful to be environmentally responsible in most ways, I now realize how wasteful our TP usage is. This method cuts it by more than 50%! Excellent advice: if babies can use towelling, so can adults. My toilet is so configured that the bowl is next to the wash hand basin, so when I use the toilet, I fill up the basin with warm soapy water and, while sitting on the toilet, I wash my bottom with the soapy water and a soft sponge, just like using a bidet. I then dry myself carefully with a linen hand towel. Another method is to use pieces of newspaper, as they used to do during the War.

I live in SW Florida. I have been trying for a week to get toilet paper, paper towels, or flushable wipes. Nowhere to be found. We have gotten spoiled having easy access to toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates. I am in my late 50's and remember growing up when there was not a paper towel in the house. We used cloths that were washed like just about everyone else in the country. My children grew up with me using cloth diapers. Its crazy how dependent we have become on disposable items. It might sound gross to some but using cloths to wipe has been going on far longer than using flushable wipes! I just wish everyone would try to calm down and use their heads and be mindful and think of others instead of everyone having to be so greedy. Bad times really can bring out the worst in people. Thank you for a calm matter of fact video about something that many of us are experiencing.

I walked into small store 2days ago and to my surprise, one 24 pk of TP on the shelf. I expected lights to start flashing, glitter falling from the ceiling as I scooped it into my arms an rushed to the check out!!! But really, I had 4 rolls left but was hoping to find some but was not out looking for it. Anyhoo I left that pkg of TP sitting out couple days just to admire my find before I put them away.

Great video! Yep that was the process for cloth diapers. People freak out because it’s adult waste. Most babies have real people waste prior to potty training. So suck it up folks. Thank you for dealing with this rather desperate and unpleasant subject. I used cloth diapers for my babies. My youngest had very sensitive skin and no matter what I tried in cleansing her with, or applying topically, she continued having painful diaper rash. I even tried hanging them in the sun hoping the sun's rays would sanitize them. My doctor suggested boiling the diapers. Her diaper pail was a large enameled pail with a lid. I found boiling the diapers killed any bacteria but unless I continued to boil them after each use the diaper rash would come back. As long as I boiled them I didn't need to use any protective creams or lotions on her skin. If I remember correctly (I am 83), I rinsed the diapers in the washer, then washed them and gave them an extra rinse. Then boiled them I think for a minimum of 20 minutes ( probably longer) and then dumped them in the washer again, drained them and followed with a final rinse. The idea of using a potatoe masher sounds like a great idea. Also I have a hand wash "tool" that looks kind of like a small plunger used to unclog plumbing. It always bothered me finalizing the cleansing of the newly sterlized diapers by doing the last rinse in the unsterilized washing machine tub.Sadly, I have grandchildren living with me that I think would have a fit if I approached them with this method of dealing with our lack of t.p. crisis

That's what we used to do with our cloth diapers We would flush the toilet and stick the diaper in the toilet while it was flushing and rinse the poo poo diaper, then stick it on the diaper pail!. Thank you for your help/reminder.

By coincidence, we put bidet sprayers on our toilets before the virus and are so grateful. Before that, I kept clean water in a squeeze bottle next to the toilet. The water helps wash away any soil. A little paper or cloth will dry off and you’re done. Glad you raised the subject. Thanks.

My daughter in law is awesome she made feminine pads from cloth uses cloth diapers makes clothes soap has 4 children 2- 9 yrs. old. and made fabric t.p. she has dryer balls. They are very minimalist. I use cloth napkins. Yes we as a society is very spoiled. My mom and Dad were teens in the depression.I used cloth diapers and used wash cloths in a sandwich bag wet when my boys had a mess on the road and used small bags for their diapers

When my son was a baby we used cloth nappies and i made cloth baby wipes. At that point we were quite poor so we adults also started using this system that Judi mentioned, after all it wasn't that much more effort from what we were already doing. I have been following information on Covid 19 since January so I suspected lock downs would happen. Whilst we did stock up a bit on toilet paper in January, we also decided to invest in a nappy pail at the same time. However, in these circumstances since there are no more cloth nappies we have chosen to save the toilet paper for the solids and use the dry wipes (flannel works best!) for the wee. Honestly, just as we had before, we feel cleaner. The dry pail method for dry wipe useage is easy and doesn't smell until you place the cloths into your washing machine and even then not all that much. We wipe the pail down after each use with baby wipes which we keep on hand for many uses around the house. We are now using 70% less toilet paper than before and don't have to deal with any poo. It's really very easy and not nearly as gross as one would think, and you may like how much softer it feels and how much cleaner you feel, give it a try!

My grandma and mom told me they used cloth diapers on us when we were little. Unfortunately my grandma and mom are deceased. But if memory serves me correctly, my mom briefly used clothe diapers on my little sister when they ran out of money. I think my mom used boiling hot water to clean the diapers.
