I like the use of two poles. I have seen people setup tents with poles inside and I know it can be done, but I think the setup you demonstrate here is easier to setup with less fuss and easier for beginners or those of us who don't want to deal with a lot of ropes or poles.

Thank you for your videos and more information. I appreciate that you share the knowledge. I have seen a lot of pup tents and tarp shelters on you tube. There is one thing that I do that helps me better on windy days is after the back half is stake and set. I put the front stake in the ground with a loop not. Then make a trucker hitch at the top instead of the bottom. So when I am standing I can hold my shelter next to the body and then tighten the cord downwards to the ground. This will give more control. Because one hand can still hold the top of the shelter until your tension is needed with the other hand pulling away towards the ground. Thank you for helping us.

I think I might try this tomorrow but leave the fraps loose till I get 3-4 and then try to pull them tight with a toggle and see if it's just as tight as pulling each wrap tight as you go. Might make it easier to get the cord in between the poles.

Many thanks for all the videos you put out and just being honest here, but out of all the "how to videos" I love the simplicity of instruction block as well as the fact all the content is tried/tested and honest equipment reviews with no agenda just the facts with pros n cons. Anyways love what you do and its awesome to see a wilderness survival channel that focuses on the skill building and not product pushing of gear/equipment that the average person can't afford anyways. I do have what I consider a smaller share of gear videos and that ranges from inexpensive to expensive and everything in between, but I am trying to keep that limited to 20% or so of the channel. The majority love the gear videos so I have to take that into account, but I prefer to keep it mostly skills videos. It seems to be well received if I show gear/kits up front and then show how to use that gear in skills videos. Seems like a good balance from what I am seeing.

Cardinal Outdoors they are slick in the mud and on leaves if it’s steep, these are slick bottom, just buckskin with zero tread. You learn to walk differently after wearing them for some time. I don’t wear them when teaching since I al usually in a time crunch and don’t have time to choose a certain path. That and it’s almost always raining when I teach for some reason. Boots allow me to just barrel right through everything without thinking

With the mentality that shelters should both be quick to deploy, and quick to take down, is there a viable way to use this set up without lashing the poles together? I think I'll try this tonight with a modified highwayman's hitch and see how it holds up.

I’m sure it can be done. What we teach the military is a lower profile version and the bipod is lashed separately and is just propping up the shelter from underneath. That way it can be slid down from inside and the shelter drops down and offers some concealment.

You can use a single pole if you tie onto it with a clove hitch in the center of your ridgeline. This gives you two tie out points.

Do you find that 25' for a ridgeline is almost always enough in most wilderness settings? I learned the ridgeline system from Corporal and he always said to keep a minimum of 50' and I'm curious of your take on it. Not splitting hairs, mad respect for you both, just curious.

The Corporal is off his meds sometimes. Kidding, we both teach the 25’ ridge line at physical classes so I’m not sure why he would do 50’ for videos, never noticed that. Generally 25’ is all that is needed in the east, but he lives out west where trees can be more sparse so maybe that is the reason.

As long as the stakes (and tarp grommets) hold, just attach both top points to the lash point, and stake the rear of the second tarp in the same, straight line. The opposing tension should hold everything in place.

Constructive criticism: Zoomed in a bit too far, on the wraps. You do capture all of the essentials but lost some of the things in the periphery. Plus, for the longer shots, it is worth using a wearable microphone. It helps keep the sound level consistent when traversing from a close up scene to a mid or long distance shot. Still a very useful video mind, which gets my thumbs up. Love the channel too, and am a subscriber.

I appreciate the constructive feedback. I filmed this on the fly with my phone thirty minutes before editing and releasing it so that I would have something for the channel subs to watch today. Definitely not my best work, but better than missing a video altogether. I’ve just come off of spending a few days with my family that I have been separated from for 134 out of the last 140 days, with 24 of the last 48 hours spent driving to make that happen. I just didn’t have much time to make this one happen.

I have not understood why one would use any tarp smaller than a 9x9 or 10x10? Shelter is unnecessary when weather is pleasant but when it is violent or extreme you will die in that tiny vee. Any thoughts?

I wouldn’t call it tiny. I’m 6’3 and have used this for years. I think the parameters you put on it as why you think it would fail are unreasonable. Violent and extreme weather like what, and where? Lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards? I don’t think a tarp of any size is going to get you through violent weather.

I've done the entire Colorado Trail using a tarp that size including squalls and storms well above 10K altitude. You'll be fine if you're smart about picking your location. I wouldn't want to try to put up any large tarp in a violent storm and if you have time to plan, plan appropriately for the materials you have on hand. Any shelter is better than none.
