I thought about using a thumbnail with the steaks since those do so well on KZbin, but decided against it in the end. I prefer to just keep it real rather than try and game it up for YT, and be about hanging out in the woods which folks seem to be enjoying. I prefer this format myself. Hope you all are too!

Josh, how dare you not carve those kabob sticks and cutting board yourself?!? Thats not bushcraft!!😂😂 cant wait for the class film to come out man. Those steaks look great, something primal and relaxing about eating steak in the woods with your hands. Take care bro

Thanks for the lighter tip. I just ordered the zippo version. It shoots out like a jet as opposed to the lazy flame that blows out easily in the Thunderbird brand. Great upgrade to my old Zippo, that has been laying on a shelf for years.

Full points for authenticity when mentioning the camera before going to bed. There are a lot of channels that seem to be more about wilderness film making than bushcraft. Your approach to the subject is appreciated.

Right? I'm here at work, doing my best to help people out, and when things get stressful I can take a 5-10 minute break, put on the headphones, sip some spring water, and it's like I'm out camping for a shortwhile. I see the green and hear the wind... then back to the madness. =)

I just got back from exploring the wilderness of northern Minnesota on the Canadian border on the Gunflint trail. I stopped at this really old supply store/restaurant with lake cabins. Awesome! I love that thing. And it has since replaced the Bic in my pocket and the Bic is now my backup in my belt kit. Love that thing. I don’t know that I will do many more plant or tree ID videos here in KZbin, that whole series recently didn’t perform well at all so that leads me to believe there just isn’t enough interest in that sort of thing. I’ll sneak it into the mix in this new format maybe

My biggest takeaway is the keyhole fire, new to me and I’m blown away by its common sense brilliance (like most of the traditional ways). Also liked that Thunderbird Zippo and that it runs on Butane...memories as a younger man of the burn of lighter fluid on my thigh from a leaking Zippo in my pocket. And I caught the trick flip when you opened it, former smoker? Haha, that’s usually the only people that can do or know that one.

Gotcha, I thought about skipping Basic and jumping into Intermediate but came to the conclusion that I don’t want to miss out on anything (learning and experience) if I can help it, and don’t want to be over confident in my abilities/new found knowledge. More importantly I need to build up my strength and stamina before heading out, so I don’t have to live with the regret of “tapping out.” All in good time and makes me look forward to it more. Do they ever do a Basic in FL or is it just the Intermediate?

I cook up stew and use a vacuum packer and freeze. Good for at least 2 days. I always take rice and boil in bags. Sometimes I even make rice and vacuum seal it to go with the fresh trout of the day. Always spices, a fresh lemon and butter/oils. I always insist on 5star food! Gorp is critical...boiled water is hard to get ice cold but oh well! There is always a great sake in plastic bottles or...this lasts a few days...a week or two with fresh caught fish...the freeze dried stuff is simply icky. I like the freeze dried ice cream... The Long Red Braid...what happens if she cuts it? You won't let her, huh! huggs I am so very glad you have such a great life using the skills you won by hard work! By really being OUT in the wilderness. Knowing the wilderness. Embracing the wilderness...okay I can get a bit weird...grins.

For a semi-permanent camp, I prefer to begin with a raised bed and then move on to a simple Baker Frame. We carry the tarp anyway, gear can be stowed underneath, and I can sit on the top. Next morning, make a seatback to move around on the bed for making a chair or a backrest for reading.

I've not really experienced my zippo leaking. Are we talking about the actual liquid fuel leaking out of the case or just fuel evaporation? I always keep mine upside down in that little watch pocket on my jeans. I only have to refill it maybe once every couple of weeks (give or take, how much I'm using it). It's also the only lighter I've never lost.

@GrayBeardedGreenBeret
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret 5 жыл бұрын
The problem I have with making shelters out of wood is that they are a lot of effort and more for permanent camp locations. I like to be a little more open to the wilderness when I am in it. Even tents are too closed off for me. I can be closed in at home in my house. I may incorporate some wood construction into this camp later, though.

I don’t ever worry about the bugs. I’ve slept in the ground for 30+ years. Dirt happens, mud happens, scrapes and bruises happen, bugs happen. Nothing has ever bitten me but ants, scorpions, and bees (stings) really and I’m no worse for wear. Those are pretty rare occasions also. Can’t say that I’ve ever been bitten in my sleep by anything. Ticks and mosquitoes are a different story so I like my Punky Dope for those.

@@chadsims44 I have the soft-flame (yellow-flame) Pipe Lighter version, where the flame exits at 90° through round hole in windscreen. Made by Vector/KGM sold as Thunderbird VTH155PL (a KM-THISERTPP insert in high polish chrome flip-top housing). Needs occasional cleaning of flint dust debris, and a new flint based on usage frequency.

You need to have that lighter insert on your Amazon influencer page. That way I can support you when I buy one. Great video as always.

Definitely not far enough away to not hear cars or dogs, but in fairness I never once claimed to be far out in the woods. It’s harder and harder to find a place like that so it’s not something I even look for, I just go out and enjoy the woods. I even hear cats and dogs when I am out hunting these days.

Is there a reason you carry a separate knife for cooking and not just use your bushcraft knife?
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret

No, I usually don’t. Just happened to have this and the cutting board in the cooler that the steaks were chilling in while I built and filmed the rest of the camp. It was next to all the batteries and camera gear.

Dirt Diver gotcha, yeah if I was just out on my own and kit having to film a video I wouldn’t have had a cutting board or separate knife. Probably wouldn’t have have steaks and kabobs either but that’s beside the point.

@@GrayBeardedGreenBeret Haha true. I like to take fresh foods for the first night on a multiday trip if I can, so in my mind I must have thought that's what was going on. Incidentally I have been checking out titanium cutting boards recently, I found a good one online about 12 inches long and figure it could double as a BBQ plate for cooking on (maybe, I have no idea if that would work since titanium transfers heat so fast) and possibly some other things too. Maybe use it as a snow or sand shovel in a pinch? Maybe use it as a sit pad? I don't really know yet but it sure would be handy to cut food on and it weighs nothing, plus can easy slide down the back of the pack.

That bit at the end… now that’s some funny shit! “ Actually I got to turn the camera off, then I’ll see you in the morning, as scene fades to black… and then no tomorrow scene! Got to appreciate a guy who gets every mile out of their clothing. I have several well worn clothes that I got in the early 70s and most of my everyday wear is 10 to 20 years old. When I go into town, the panhandlers always trying to give me money!

Your videos are the best advertisement for taking a class with you! Good stuff. I have an off-topic question for you. I have a Mora companion and I feel like I've totally destroyed the edge. Should I keep working with it or use the Pathfinder knife sharpening service to do a "factory reset"? I feel like once I do that, and know it's sharp, I can just work to keep the edge rather than oversharpen it. Thanks for any guidance you can offer.
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret 5 жыл бұрын
I think if you aren’t confident in your ability to reset the edge it’s worth sending in for a do-over, yes. Companions aren’t expensive, no, but they are great knives so why waste one? I’d get it reset and keep practicing those sharpening skills on an edge that’s correctly angled, plus they will put a 90-degree spine on it
