No Waiting - Sound Speeds

Cameras continue to get smaller and simpler while our sound packages continue to get bigger and more complex. To make it even more fun, the expectations of the sound department continues
to expand. Soon we may reach a point where production is going to be waiting on sound but that is not today. Today it's more often considered lack of preparation if sound asks for a few
seconds. When we need it, we need it but try not to get to the point where you need it. But why? Sound Speeds!

Is it up to the boom op to actually plant a plant mic or do we tell the utility where to place it?

You could say another name for a boom operator is "microphone placement technician". Whether placing a boom mic over talent or planting a microphone on set, it's the boom op's job. The boom op watches rehearsal and determines what needs to be boomed and if something can't be, you resort to a plant next. Why trust a utility to place a microphone on set when he/she wasn't there watching the rehearsal?

What lav do you recommend?

For what purpose? For general use I love the sound of the DPA 4060 or 4061 if you want a low sensitive version. If you need a skinnier option, Sanken COS-11D. If you need the tiniest of lavs, Countrymen B6. If you need a side address lav, you can't beat a DPA Slim.
