As a person whose eyesight is failing (Age Related Macular degeneration), it would really help me if there were even larger fonts. Right now, I am at the next to the largest font available on paperwhite and scribe. Very worrying that I only have one more step up. I can of course use the kindle app on iPad, but I find that the kindle e-readers are much easier on my eyes. Since I typically read about 200+ books per year, this is a very big deal to me.

I was waiting for Amazon’s new releases to replace my old 7th generation Paperwhite… but after seeing what was presented and the launch prices… I went ahead and bought a Kobo Libra Colour. Definitely, no one offers so much for so little… €180 in Europe… Kindle Paperwhite is €199, Kindle Colorsoft is €300... without the ability to take notes, connect to Drive, Dropbox, Pocket… no connection to eBiblio (public library system), Asymmetrical, with physical buttons, 7” screen and it’s light... it has everything. Right now in Europe, the Kobo Libra colour at that price has no possible rival. By the way, thanks to your video on how to transfer books from Kindle to EPUB (in my case, KEPUB), I now have my entire Kindle library on Kobo. Thank you so much for your content!!

I thought of a scribe mini tooooo! I have the scribe and I loveeee it over paperwhite and I don’t even use the pen. But everything seems more crisp and the typing is faster on the scribe. I’m Canadian and I use to use kobo librar 2 but honestly they never had any Christian fiction books I could buy. Like the authors did not exist at all. So I went back to kindle lol no regrets!

One of the best features of the new Paperwhites is that the little text at the bottom (time left in chapter, etc.) is slightly larger. Overall, the display is crisp like a Scribe and just feels nicer than the previous generation. The speed feels much faster than a 20-25% improvement and I'm thrilled with it. I'm thinking of sending back the "Plant based leather" cover for maybe a good leather sleeve or something. Hard to find a quality item in the regard; they're all "vegan leather" or "PU leather." I'm just not a fan of any of the fake leather. So glad to see you back, Dylan!

Immediately leapt at an upgrade from my previous gen Paperwhite when I saw the 20-25% speed boost. The software could be so slow-and remains so compared with screen technology on other tablet devices. Any significant jump in that department was a lock for me.

About the power button on the bottom of the Kindle Paperwhite. Earlier models of the Kindle had a setting called Screen Rotation that let the screen be rotated in any direction. In addition to portrait and landscape each of those could be set 180°. This is similar to the Oasis but done manually. If Amazon added that setting to the new Kindles, the screen could be rotated 180° and then the Kindle could be turned upside down. This would result in the power button being at the top of the Kindle.

Would love to see the new size sandwiched against the old one to know exactly how much bigger it is. In some images it looks HUGE in others I can only tell which is new BC of the color on the back lol. I'm female on the petite size. My Kindle 11th gen is hard on my arthritis and too big to easily good one handed, so more than a mm or two would probably make this way to large for my hands and add extra strain to my arthritis. I prefer my Kobo Clara 2E over my Paperwhite as far as size and weight go but the 6 inch Kindle wouldn't work for me BC I get migraines. I also struggle to sleep if I don't use the amber light before bed. IMO it's really unfortunate the price went up 15 dollars (Canadian) for the "new" basic but they still haven't added amber lights. For my BODY and health, it feels like Kindle is being a bit discriminatory (not the correct word BC it's likely unintentional) as their Paperwhite has features like water resistance and amber light but it's heavier and more difficult for one handed use (I assume it's great for most men though!) and then the Kindle basic is lacking these two features that would work for mental and physical health, migraines etc. I guess the accessibility just doesn't feel inclusive. I'm not even a horrible sufferer of my conditions, there are ppl who are way way way worse off than I am and it's just unfortunate that they aren't taking physical limitations or invisible illnesses like insomnia, eye stain etc into account across all products. I love my Kobo Clara because it's got all the features and it's still small, I love Kindle unlimited though. I also love that if you don't want the amber light you can just not turn it on but the option is there. I've noticed a LOT of ppl who have health things, from chemo to surgeries being their Kindles or Kobo's with them to kill time so i know I'm not the only person who would appreciate the 6 inch having the same features the Kobo does... I hope this makes sense!

Thanks for this review! What I REALLY wanna know is how the speed ("25% faster" etc.) compares to the Colorsoft. Is the Colorsoft gonna be just as fast as this new Paperwhite? Will it be slower because of the color? Same as the current/old Paperwhite? Anxious to see that comparison. I ordered the Colorsoft but I'm still torn on if I should get the new regular Paperwhite. Color is nice but if it's slow I think I'd rather have the speed since it makes the interface so much nicer to use...
@MadLadsAnonymous
@MadLadsAnonymous Ай бұрын

@GalaxyFur
@GalaxyFur Ай бұрын
The Colorsoft will be a hair slower than the 12th Gen Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. This is because it requires more CPU power to process color, which results in a little less battery life. (You will also notice that Amazon doesn't claim the Colorsoft to be 20% faster like it does with the Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition) Image quality also takes a slight hit compared to the Paperwhite and Signature Edition. While it has color, text doesn't appear as sharp as on a black-and-white E-ink screen. This is due to the added RGB filter and other factors at play that bring a couple of drawbacks vs. the black-and-white screen. All in all, Colorsoft has a great display. While it brings color to the table, which is an excellent addition, the display also can't quite match the true crispness of the black-and-white Kindles for image quality. It's still terrific but a bit softer and has less contrast and true whites the other Kindles in the 12th-generation lineup offer. Also, colored images are rendered at half resolution (150 PPI). This is common even with other e-readers like the Kobo e-readers. (150 PPI = 620 x 823 or 147 PPI to be precise on the Colorsoft, with Amazon rounding up to 150)

Kindle 12th Gen is my first e-reader so I can’t compare. I love it so far. I think it’s a bit expensive for what it is given you have to pay for books on top of the purchase price. Kindle can’t be connected to library services in Australia so you are 100% reliant on Amazon. I’ve read on reddit that a lot of people are complaining about losing their previously downloaded books when upgrading. This seems like a pretty major fault.

Thanks for a great review. I agree with your conclusion except that you did not mention whether or not the performance improvement extended to the "link-to-Wikipedia" feature. Note that I am not picking on you; nobody ever seems to mention that in their reviews. But since I read a lot of non-fiction, I am constantly looking stuff up and I find that to be excruciatingly slow and clunky on my Paperwhite. So, for non-fiction, I generally use the Kindle app on an iPad Mini. Would you be willing to render your opinion on that aspect of the new 204 Paperwhite? Thanks.

What I would like to have seen for the Signature Edition would have been at least 64GB for storage and a micro-etched glass front like on the Oasis. I will be buying a new Signature Edition despite not having those items because my Oasis' battery is going bad and also because my generation of Oasis does not have the warm LEDs (it also has aged out of updates).

The power button is just a macabre joke that it is still there.

The biggest con I have is that in Canada, you cannot order the Metallic Jade Paperwhite. And I don’t know why.

The biggest con for me is that apparently the newest Kindles no longer support Download to Transfer, at least on Mac. So you can’t backup your books or transfer them to your Kobo or other ereader.

Wait - can't you flip the device upside down to the power button is on top? It doesn't auto-orient like the Oasis does?
@dylancanread
@dylancanread Ай бұрын
Unfortunately not. You can manually adjust the orientation between horizontal and vertical, but it will not flip upside down
@ScottLufkin
@ScottLufkin Ай бұрын
@@dylancanread That seems shortsighted - and an obvious way to resove the issue of where the power goes? Maybe that can be addressed with a software patch - though it sounds like it's been an issue for a few generations now, so I'd think they would have done it already.

What do you think about Amazon removing the possibility to download and transfer books on new devices?
@jedisct1

They removed USB transfer. You can still use the Send to Kindle app, or send the books via email.

Is anyone having an issue that a window periodically comes up with 3 choices to: cancel, connect, or restart (I think those are the 3 choices). No matter which I choose or even ignore, the screen reverts to the picture of the boy sitting under the tree and restarts. It is most annoying and so I wonder if it is just my kindle or if I should replace it.

The biggest con of this e-reader is nothing related to the hardware, but the fact that you lose all ownership of the e-books you buy. Amazon can, will and has deleted books already purchased by people or unilaterally edit them per request of the copyright holders. You will end up in a locked up environment with no way out, DRM free support for books on kindle is not the best. If you're okay with this situation you can definitely go with the Kindle. In reality, all e-readers are very much similar. And this doesn't even have physical page turning buttons.

You cant add library apps or any other applications. you didn't even mention it.. did you know there are other e-readers except kindle and kobo? you cannot customize your main screen page and you have book advertise. you cannot add more language to kindle except what you have out of the box. you don't have email app and cannot customize your screen saver.
