Granted this storm was historic. That said, this section of I-40 has collapsed before from floods, and has been a constant site of repairs, relocation, tunnel collapse, etc. There is constant effort to try and stabilize what is unstable land and old crumbling rock through that gorge. I believe eventually the only answer is going to be to install a raised highway like I-70 through Glenwood Canyon in Colorado, essentially the same thing as the Blue Ridge Parkway viaduct around Grandfather Mountain in NC .
@richardsnyder842
@richardsnyder842 13 күн бұрын
I agree with the Blue Ridge Parkway viaduct method of dealing with this problem. Also an elevated viaduct might allow rock slides to go under the highway instead of block the interstate and close it for months.

The army core of engineers told them not to build the road on that side of the mountain that it was too unstable. They told them to bring it through the hot springs area of nc. But the congressman gor haywood county was in charge of the committee and he wanted it to run through his county and he got it approved there has been rockslides every since

This congressional interference helped cause the Shuttle Challenger disaster. A certain Congressional representative wanted the construction of booster rockets in his district. In order to transport the booster rockets by rail as the only method available, joints with O rings were necessary.

I have a history here. My dad was a native of Haywood County. He was a veterinarian at a local vet hospital, and when he was younger, was a surveyor for this road. Later on we drove this road when it wasn't paved to go fishing at Big Creek in his 1960 Jeep wagon. He later bought a dumb truck to help pave it. This was the 60s. I rode with his driver to pour asphalt and build this road. God speed for the folks of Western NC!

i live in western n.c...and as others have said, this highway has been troublesome from day one, with rockslides, etc. at one time they stacked crushed cars along the side to stop tumbling rocks from blocking the west bound lane. ( area beautification project) i remember my dad commenting many years ago that I 40 could have gone thru Hot Springs Tenn. and followed the french broad river rather than pidgeon, but the politicans from the western counties wanted the highway to come as far west as possible before entering Tenn. to draw tourist. granted there would have been problems along the french broad with this hurricane, but i don't believe it would have been as severe as what we have along the pidgeon and there would have been much less maintenance over the years than what the present route has required.

They use soil nails and shotcrete and similar methods for stabilization from about San Francisco south on the highway next to the Pacific Ocean. The only place that comes to mind where there was work close to the level of the ocean is Pebble Beach, at the golf course itself, where it comes right up to the ocean. Check that out vis-a-vis the work being done on the river in North Carolina. What the folks in North Carolina are doing now is getting the road back into use. That is number one right now. Any “cure” for high, fast storm water washing out the road will be a job of its own. Bring money.

That particular stretch where the collapse occurred, on the Tennessee side, has seen closures in the last couple of decades for serious rock / landslides. You can see the evidence of the repairs that have been done for those events. That section of I-40 is very precarious. It sees a lot more rocks and boulders hitting the road and closing it down then it does flooding, but flooding is in this case a much more serious problem. That section of I-40 runs parallel to the Pigeon River for most of that section. There are also a couple of tunnels along that stretch of interstate as well. I've been up and down that road many many times. The only thing that the state of North Carolina is going to be able to afford to do is an in-place repair, and it's going to take them at least a year to do that. In order to fix that section of interstate to prevent it from being affected by flooding or landslides in the future is an expense that would require a lot of money given to the state of North Carolina and Tennessee from the federal government. I don't personally see that happening.

Repair the highway as follows: (1) First and foremost, hire a competent and proven contractor; (2) Drive i-beams into ground until they reach bedrock; (3) install corrugated steel sheets and attach to i-beams; (4) backfill with rock and concrete; (5) add road surface; (6) install concrete road barriers at edge of hillside; (7) drape steel fence across hillside to contain boulders. These methods are used effectively throughout the US.

It would seem to me that ANY roads running alongside river or streams would be prone erosion every year during Spring flooding. I would think it would make sense to cross over waterways and then steer as clear of them as possible. I realize it makes for pretty scenery and for lower initial costs, but for the long run it doesn’t make much sense. Government entities and politicians don’t usually think in terms of making things that last for many years. It is just a matter of sporadic big revenue projects for jobs. We as Americans need to start thinking bigger.

I'd love to see the DOT's plan to restore where the eastbound road bed was so they can replace the eastbound lanes. Can they trench the riverbed to alter its path like was done on a smaller scale in the Chimney Rock Gorge, allowing them to fill the enormous washed out area where the eastbound lanes once were? Can some sort of retaining wall be built that can withstand the Pigeon River's currents during high water?

Concrete pours like those used to build major dams. Just keep pouring massive foundations deep enough to stop erosion. All it would take is the money wasted on Ukraine and Africa by the outgoing administration.

Maybe a temporary repair , fine. But maybe NC DOT ought to look at a total reroute around that area. Been done before. Call The Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority, they have rerouted the turnpike around antiquated tunnels in several locations. They might be able to lend a hand!

Question is , will whatever they do hold up if it happens again. Flooding like this has happened before, no one was here to see it and there weren't roads and towns around to be damaged.

By getting all of the large rocks back out of the river and putting them back on the banks where they came from just like the rail road was doing until the epa stopped them
@LkOutMtnMan
@LkOutMtnMan 10 күн бұрын
Being an engineer I would have blasted large sections of rock from the bank next to the road and shoved all the rock over to the river bank to fill it in for the other lane that's missing. The idea that a chert foundation for the road would withstand the water erosion in a curve was absurd! Large boulders from the bank or hauled in would last many years.

You pile drive steel into the bedrock of the river,creating a wall of steel,then build concrete dam wall that diverts the water away from the bank,,if the river turns towards highway gotta have a diversionary wall,other it won't be fixed properly, long term fix money wise,but needs done immediately, no career job,slow poke stuff
