His best solo song is "Countdown" from 1992's "Out of the Cradle", arguably his best solo album, and to be honest, LB is better solo than in FM anyway... he's too much of a distinctive artist on his own to be in a fivesome where he would have to compromise his own vision to flourish to the best of his ability & creativity...

Fleetwood Mac is not the backup band for Stevie Nicks. You really need to react to Lindsey's songs with Fleetwood Mac because not only has he written and sung lots of their songs, but he was the architect of their sound and produced Stevie's and Christine's songs. Lindsey is a talented genius. Listen to "Go Your Own Way", "Never Going Back Again", "Second Hand News", the live version of "Big Love" from their 1998 concert "The Dance", and the "Tusk" album is Lindsey's production. Some people don't like it but Lindsey was always innovating so check out the title track "Tusk", "The Ledge", "Save Me a Place", "What Makes You Think You're the One", "Not That Funny" and "I Know I'm Not Wrong". Also, he did an album with Christine a few years back called "Buckingham McVie" that was supposed to be a Fleetwood Mac album but Stevie didn't want to do it. 🙄 Mick Fleetwood and John McVie joined Christine and Lindsey on the album and it's quite good.

Amen! There seems to be a misunderstanding of Lindsey’s role in Fleetwood Mac here. Lindsey, Stevie and Christine shared songwriting and lead vocal duties in the band. If anything, Lindsey typically (and Christine) had more songs per LP than Stevie. Lindsey, unlike Stevie, was intricately involved in every song the band recorded - as guitarist, occasional keyboardist, producer/arranger, vocalist. He was instrumental in arranging Stevie’s songs, and was - in Christine’s words - her favorite producer. From musical director to the band’s driving creative force - Lindsey was FAR more than a backup musician/vocalist for Stevie. Oh, and Lindsey wrote hit songs for the band too, including 3 top 10 singles. Christine - not Stevie - wrote more hits for the band than any other writer. I love Stevie, but her role in the band gets over amplified because of her solo success. The band is successful because of all its members - not just one.
@kellyreiterman
@kellyreiterman Жыл бұрын
@@redletter2008 And Amen to your comment! I was a huge Stevie fan in the 80s and I saw her live twice. However, she's no saint and Lindsey isn't the devil incarnate. They are flawed human beings like the rest of us. People need to remember that the only reason Stevie got in Fleetwood Mac in the first place was because Lindsey made them a package deal. Mick just wanted Lindsey after hearing the "Buckingham/Nicks" album. This is a fact that the general public doesn't know and Stevie chooses to forget. Am I glad that she was in the band? Of course, but that power went to her head when she got him fired a few years back and then they tried to replace him with two guitarists (Mike Campbell and Neil Finn) on their last tour and I'm sorry, no one matches Lindsey's playing, vocals, or stage presence.

Lindsey is Fleetwood Mac’s secret weapon. They were a blues band, needing a guitar player/singer. They asked Lindsey. He said not without Stevie. It was/is his imagination, creativity, artistry, arranging, production that turned them into a super group. Mick and John may be the heartbeat, but Linsey is the veins through which their talent and art gets distributed.

On this recording, Buckingham did vocals, guitars, electric piano, drum overdubs and percussions. George Hawkins played the bass, and fellow Fleetwood Mac member Mick Fleetwood played the drums. That's all! Magic.
@happypapi1903
@happypapi1903 4 ай бұрын
Mick actually only ever played 4 bars before he left the session, so what they did was take the tape of the drum tracks that were already recorded, spliced them into a loop onto the master tape, then overdubbed everything else on top of the looped/assembled drum tracks. Easy to do with DAWs nowadays (comp a drum track, quantize to grid, done) but with tape, it must have been a very painstaking process.

Bingo! Lindsey was to Fleetwood Mac like Brian Wilson was to The Beach Boys. And Lindsey idolizes Brian. And as others have said here in the comments you need to go deeper in the Mac catalog. Not only do they have a huge history *before* Buckingham Nicks (who joined the band as a couple, after recording their duo album which is impossible to find, but is great), but after joining not only did Lindsey have so much to do with the production of almost every Fleetwood Mac song, but he had lots of his own songs, and as someone else has mentioned, more than Stevie’s output. While everybody in FM was valuable, if I had to choose an MVP in that band, it would be Lindsey Buckingham.

Exactly! It baffles me when Jay said he liked Lindsey solo more. The sound on this song is VERY Fleetwood Mac like. Exactly because of Lindsey's influence on Fleetwood Mac albums overall. Jay is slowly letting go of the lens of judging FM as Stevie's Back up band, but he has a ways to go still. I think Amber is further ahead in understanding this now.

Lindsey Buckingham was honestly a musical genius in so many ways. He was actually very OCD in fine tuning how all FM songs were put together in the studio. If you go back and watch many of the old BTS clips of them in the studio in the 70's/80's, you will see that while many of the band members just wanted go home, Lindsey was relentless in getting things just right. Probably played a part in why they eventually broke up. So why he was a very demanding perfectionist, and maybe not the easiest guy to work with, he was also extremely talented, and played a HUGE role in FM's success.

Lindsey has so many great songs where he has the lead in Fleetwood Mac... don't sell him short! "I'm So Afraid" is a great song with an amazing guitar solo, and I recommend the version from their live album. "Never Going Back Again", "Go Your Own Way", "The Chain" and his solo hits "Holiday Road", "Go Insane" and the solo one-man-show live version of "Big Love", are all great songs. Jay, I grew up loving Fleetwood Mac and mostly Stevie Nicks, seeing them live in '83 and Stevie live in '84, and even though I still like Stevie, I have a much bigger appreciation of Lindsey and his masterful arranging and producing of all the songs on the Fleetwood Mac records. He is a visionary and as you saw in the beginning of this one, he's also trying different stuff like grunting that definitely sets it apart. He is severely underrated and, as stated by Amber, his guitar work is impeccable.

Same with me. Like Jay, I was drawn to Stevie first. Major fan, but I always preferred her work with Fleetwood Mac. I knew the early albums Stevie and Lindsey did with the band as my mom had the LPs in the ‘70s. Only when I was older did I more fully appreciate how talented and vital the other band members were - especially Lindsey and Christine. Arguably, Fleetwood Mac would never have become one of the biggest bands in rock without Lindsey’s contributions and influence. Stevie would never have been in the band had it not been for Lindsey’s insistence she join with him. He did a better job arranging Stevie’s songs than any other producer, and Stevie and many others have said as much. Christine stated Lindsey was her favorite producer and loved the work he did on her material. Since 1975, Lindsey has provided Fleetwood Mac with its edge, vision and drive on stage - and this has been most evident when they carried on without him! Amber always gets the intricacies of songs and did so again here. Love that Jay and Amber are exploring this band and I can’t fault them for focusing on Stevie first. I did too, but like me, I’m sure they’ll get there and come to value the other members as well.

Here it is... From someone who has been obsessed with every member of Fleetwood Mac for the last 40 years... You need to check out the song Big Love, but listen to it twice. The album version with a music video, and then the live version from The Dance concert special. Two very different styles for the same song, but both are all Lindsey. The studio version was going to be on his solo album, but the Mac had to get back together, so he brought the song to them for their album instead, so it's really a solo song that he got the band to chip in on. Then the live version, is just acoustic finger picking madness with him standing alone on stage in command, so totally different. Do those two songs, and never have low expectations of Lindsey Buckingham ever again. After hearing both versions, you'll have insane levels of respect for him. Stevie or no Stevie...

Jay, if it weren't for Lindsey, you would've NEVER heard of Stevie. The band wanted HIM to join, but he not only insisted that Stevie was a part of the package, he wrote most of their songs during his tenure, rewrote or orchestrated the songs both Stevie and Christine wrote to make them better, and in the case of Stevie, acceptable to the band, but he directed pretty everything the band wrote and released. That's WHY they hired him, and he made them not only popular again, but chart higher than they ever had.

Lindsey has made some of the most adventurous and innovative pop music of the last 40 years. His solo work is a laboratory where he gets to go crazy, then he would take what worked and make it pop in Fleetwood Mac. He's a mad genius. HIs solo work is not as accessible as Fleetwood Mac's, but it's very rewarding if you follow where he's going (which is usually some place really weird)

Ok. You MUST hear Big Love, Shut Us Down, Seeds We Sow, Rock Away Blind, Go Insane, Holiday Road.... His talent is endless. He and Stevie...mostly his production are responsible for the unique FWM post 1975 sound.

When I was younger, Lindsay Buckingham was considered one of the top guitarists in Rock History coming in next to Carlos Santana. Big Love is an awesome solo hit.

If you want some pure Stevie & Lindsey you need to listen to their album "Buckingham Nicks" from 1973, before Fleetwood Mac, when they were young and in love. Some of their best work.

This was a minor hit for Linsey. I always thought it was a Fleetwood Mac song that the others may not have wanted to record. It sounds so much like a Mac song. I love how he plays with his fingers!

Very satisfying reaction to one of my favorite songs of all time. This song is haunting. I had the album this was on and I’m about 80% sure that *all* the vocals, including all backing vocals were Lindsey on this. He was to Fleetwood Mac as Brian Wilson was to The Beach Boys, and Lindsey both idolizes and emulates Brian. Except in his guitar playing, where he created his own fingerpicking style, but inspired by and based upon another legend, John Stewart, who himself was a great songwriter and wrote what for me is the Monkees best song, “Daydream Believer”. Thanks for sharing this reaction. As others have said, you owe it to yourself to feast upon the wonders of Lindsey Buckingham music, both with FM and after. For an awesome FM song that should blow you away, check out “Tusk”. Heck, check out that entire album, which is practically a Lindsey Buckingham solo album featuring Fleetwood Mac.

Lindsay Buckingham is the reason Fleetwood Mac were such a success. One of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of his generation. Check out Fleetwood Mac's song Big Love (the live "The Dance" concert) to truly appreciate how good he was. One man sounds like 3 different guitars playing together.

Jay, you say like him solo because you haven't really listened to hardly any songs that he was the main writer and singer for in Fleetwood Mac. You did one very early on (Go your own way) and you loved it! You do so many reactions I wonder if you forgot this one? I am glad you both are starting to get the incredible depth of talent that makes up Fleetwood Mac! It has Fleetwood Mac Vibes because Lindsey is a huge influence and part of the band. One of the three incredible vocalists and songwriters. Also a totally underrated guitar player. He also produced Fleetwood Mac albums. Other fantastic Lindsey Buckingham songs in FM to check out would be I'm So Afraid, Never Going Back Again, Second Hand News, Monday Morning or Tusk. Tusk has particularly awesome drums and a marching band. If you do that one, you have to do the official music video! It is a classic! You will see a very young Stevie Nicks twirling a baton. The odd beginning, well that is another trademark part of Lindsey Buckingham. He could get very experimental and it wasn't always good IMO. Big Love is another great song by him in FM, but it does have this little bit odd "Ooh Ah" part. And some will definitely disagree, but I think his oddness was balanced out by the others in Fleetwood Mac. that is what great bandmates do, they bring out the best and keep the not so great parts in check. I do believe this trait is why he never made it as big as a solo artist as he would have liked.

Lindsey has many songs in Fleetwood Mac as well where Stevie and Christine sing backup. Three songwriters/singers in one band making a huge variety of styles of songs. Their album, Rumours is one of best selling albums in recording history, and three of them have fantastic songs on it. You should check out the entire album. It’s a masterpiece.

First time i heard this song was just a few years ago. Probably around 2019 or 2020, i was coming down off LSD. My wife threw in the towel and went to sleep but i couldn't yet. It was about 4 or 5 in the morning, and i was lying on the bed in the other room, and this song came on. I played it on repeat for like the next 5 hours until i decided to put it on loud and make us breakfast. Chorizo, potatoes, sausage, and eggs. I thought about my wife the whole time and served her in bed. Beautiful times. Hope there's more to come.

Lindsey is my favorite member of Fleetwood Mac! They wouldn't have the same sound without him. I can always pick out his voice. It's distinctive! Not to mention his genius songwriting and guitar playing. I was wondering when the two of you would realize all the above. I grew up in that era and a lot of those details were common knowledge then. Love your reactions! ❤
