This one is sung by Stevie’s long-term boyfriend (ex) and the guitarist, Lindsey Buckingham. (He’s a guy). They were a duo called Buckingham Nicks before they were asked to join Fleetwood Mac. They made this album, Rumours, while they were breaking up. Many of the songs are about each other and their ensuing breakup.

At a concert in New Zealand, mid 70's, the break up hit the stage and performance when Stevie got very emotional and left the stage half way through this song, Christine McVie went off stage also as well as Lindsey Buckingham, leaving Mick Fleetwood and John McVie alone on stage...one of the support acts, Hammond Gamble, an Englishman from NZ, a fantastic blues guitarist jumped up and the three of them pumped out some fantastic blues for as long as it took to clear up the tears and emotions backstage...sad but fantastic half time blues.

Rumours is one of the all-time best albums ever made. The band was falling apart inside. Christie McVie (keyboards) was cheating on her husband John (bass) with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham (singing this one) who was Stevie Nicks' boyfriend, but she was sleeping with Mick Fleetwoood (Drums). They could have imploded, but instead channeled all that energy and anger and sadness into this album. Pain always makes for great art.

"Rumours" was written and recorded during a period where the two couples in the band, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham and John and Christine McVie, were in the throes of breakups and divorce. The energy of those trials led to some of the best rock music committed to tape. Buckingham, Nicks and Christine McVie all share lead vocal duties on this and most other Mk. II albums. "Go Your Own Way" is written from Lindsey Buckingham's perspective about the state of his relationship with Stevie Nicks. At turns he asks her to come back to him and accuses her of shacking up with someone else while he's still in love with her. It's Buckingham laying his own feelings bare for Stevie Nicks to see. It didn't work, of course. They still broke up. "Rumours" is worth listening to all the way through. The stories it tells show that even a group of people going through heartbreak can channel that in to powerful songs with some truly creative musical moments.

@@Drescher1984 They were dating before they joined Fleetwood Mac, and before they formed Buckingham / Knicks, which was prior to Fleetwood Mac. Mic Fleetwood or John McVie, can't remember offhand, was in the recording studio that Buckingham / Knicks had just recorded their album in. It was playing, and they loved the guitar work. They were in need of a guitarist at the time. So they asked the producer who the guitarist was. They contacted Lindsey to play guitar. They didn't want Stevie, since they had Christine , who has a beautiful voice. She mainly sang backup, and the band was mainly a male lead group. They wanted Lindsey for guitar and vocals. Lindsey told them that he wouldn't sign on without Stevie being brought aboard, and that they were a package deal. Fleetwood Mac had a bit of success before Lindsey and Stevie, so Lindsey was really making a big bet that they'd take both of them. Well they decided to take both of them, and for her to sing backup with Christine. That didn't last long. She wound up being the primary vocalist. Listen to the entire Rumors album. There are 5 people in the band. Steve Nicks is the lead singer, but lead vocals were also performed by Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham, rotating for various songs. The other members are Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The very original members in the late 60s were Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, and some others. They hit their stride and true fame with the Rumors album and the 5 first mentioned.

Many of their songs are about the relationships and affairs of the band members. Lindsey and Stevie were HS sweethearts, Christine and John McVie (bass) were married. They all had turbulent relationships that resulted in great music. Fleetwood Mac started as a blues band, went through many personnel changes over the years, and Stevie and Lindsey joined in the 70s and they became Superstars. I've seen them several times in concert and also have seen Stevie since she also had an amazing solo career.

It is an interesting story on how Stevie Nicks and Lyndsey Buckingham came to join Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood Mac, a well known blues/rock band who just lost their vocalist (Bob Welch) was at a recording studio and heard a demo of a very unknown duet by "Buckingham-Nicks" while they were at that studio. That is when Fleetwood Mac reached out to Buckingham-Nicks to join their band. And the rest is history.

Stevie wouldn’t sing it if she didn’t want to. She said in an interview, when she broke it off with Lindsey, she told him she wasn’t quitting Fleetwood Mac and neither was he. That Fleetwood Mac was bigger than both of them. So they made it work as they sang their feelings at each other.

Stevie nicks usually gets the lion's share of the credit for Fleetwood Mac's success. And while she was certainly a great singer, song lyricist, and of course beautiful woman, to me it was Lindsey Buckingham who was the individual most responsible for their superstardom in the last version of the group.

So, there's a lot of things to explain about Fleetwood Mac. They had a LONG history and the only consistent members are John McVie (The Mac) and Mick Fleetwood (The Fleetwood). The first phase of the band was Peter Green (Lead Vocals, Guitar), Jeremy Spencer (Guitar, Percussion), Danny Kirwan (Guitar), John McVie (Bass) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). Great songs from this era are "Oh Well (Part 1)", "Albatross", "Black Magic Woman", and "Green Manalishi (With The Three Prong Crown)". The three guitarists left for various reasons in the early 70s, and they took on two new guitarists/vocalists: Bob Welch and Bob Weston, and a keyboard player, Christine Perfect (who married John McVie and became Christine McVie) who also sang. The only really well known song from this era was "Sentimental Lady". After Welch and Weston left, they added Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and became superstars, putting out three absolutely classic albums (Fleetwood Mac, Rumors, and Tusk),. This is the best known era, and there are great song sung by each of the three lead singers (Lindsay Buckingham, Christine McVie, and Stevie Nicks) They ran into personal trouble in the mid 80s. Members left and came back and they released some albums with other vocalists and guitarists, and they finally had a full reunion in the mid 1990s. Recently Lindsay Buckingham was fired again, and replaced by Neil Finn (vocalist, formerly of Split Enz and Crowded House) and Mike Campbell (guitarist, formerly of The Heartbreakers). It's a lot, I know, but this is one of the longest lasting bands with an intense back story.

FYI....this song is from their album called 'Rumours.' This album was the best-selling album in music history until Michael Jackson's album 'Thriller' topped it. Fleetwood Mac is one of the most successful groups ever. As others have commented, the two couples in the group were going through break-ups and the songs on this album were written about what they were going through. I've mentioned it before, but there were 3 singer/songwriters in the group. Lindsey Buckingham wrote this to Stevie Nicks about his feelings on their relationship that was ending. Stevie Nicks wrote another song on this album called 'Dreams' in response to this song about her feelings for and about Lindsey. The other couple in the group that were breaking up was Christine and John McVie. Christine wrote and sang songs on this album about them, too! Critics say that this drama that the band members were going through, was the reason the songs were so powerful and became so popular and most people agree.

This is a group of people some of whom who have been married to each other in the past. Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are the main songwriters, and traditionally, the person who wrote a song is the one who sang the lead vocal on the albums. The three people I mentioned all have solo albums of their own, and there's one album with Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham which is really good too.

I love seeing people discover Fleetwood Mac and the Rumours album for the first time! Rumours is regarded as one of the best albums of all time, rightly so as every song is pretty much a hit/masterpiece. As others have said, "Go Your Own Way" was Lindsey Buckingham (singer/guitarist) singing to Stevie about their relationship. Also I think someone already said but Lindsey was the guitarist who accompanied Stevie for the "Landslide" performance (Stevie wrote "Landslide" about her relationship with Lindsey). Also, side note but has to be said: Lindsey is one of the greatest guitarists EVER and doesn't get enough credit IMO, he's phenomenal and very unique. Please keep checking out Fleetwood Mac & the Rumours album!! If you want to hear another female voice (Christine McVie) listen to Songbird, Don't Stop, You Make Loving Fun, Everywhere, Over My Head, or Say You Love Me - all great songs.
