Well said. She has a history of dislike of our royal family and she stated that Megan was a victim of abuse from the royal family, how dare she!! Most things Megan said has been proved to be lies. The bastardising of our history and placing of others in our history who absolutely were not even in the country to live here let alone queens , nobility. Even in the 40's & 50's there was a tiny minority here but in our history England , Scotland , Wales and Ireland were all white countries yet there is a push to make everyone white as rascist and that they we had always been a multicultural country which is of course rubbish but our children and grandchildren will grow up believing what they have been taught in school

"Hello Dear!" said the 83 year old lady, trying to make conversation in the restaurant, "And where are you from?" "I'm local to the area" I replied - "I live in this town." "Oh!" she said, "I see, but where are you really from?" "Well," I said, "I've lived here for most of my life!" "But where did you really come from?" she quizzed me. Suddenly the penny dropped. I'd never really picked up a west-country accent despite being married to a Cornishman for 39 years and living in the area for well over 40 years. "Oh!" I replied, "I originally come from near Northampton." We then happily talked for another half an hour.
@just_another32

yes but this misses the point a little bit. The woman had said where she came from - the UK. It is presumably where she was born!!! I am not justifying the fuss and media response to this. I think it has been absolutely dire and polarising. But there is something about being repeatedly asked where you are from, when you are from the in the UK, born and bred here, and it may be all you have ever known. That is what is different to the scenario you described (which of course makes perfect sense).
@just_another32
@just_another32 2 жыл бұрын
@Sonification I agree - it sounds like a stitch up. Unfortunately, since 2020 we are now in a situation where anybody who has a grievance or grudge (usually politically and ideologically driven) can easily create a video example of something and the media then jump on it and propagate it. Another but different example of this is George Floyd (which didn't even happen in Britain). The point is - it causes some people to be turned against one another and made suspicious of one another and fearful of speaking to one another. I think it's the aim actually - to re-racialise everything and divide and rule. The media are having a hey day. I really hope people can rise above it. As for the "where are you from question" - I find it irritating and sometimes offensive - depending on how it is asked. I was born in Britain, one parent is from an African country and the one is white English. I don't think I am "from" the African country my father is from - as I was not born there. I am from the UK. So, my perspective is that it can indeed be annoying and offensive - especially if repeatedly asked (and when someone keeps asking it despite you telling them that you are not actually from another country). Sometimes I politely say, oh do you mean why I am brown? Right! My father is from Zambia and I am mixed race. That said, I do not know the motive of the person we or talking about and I haven't listened to the conversation. It is clear to me that this is just being used to stoke (more) division. And we are sort of missing the point to be discussing "where are you from" as a question rather than the bigger of issue of what is being done here. Next week it will be something else... some other incident being used to claim that x is racist and x needs special hard-left Diversity training... that is what is going on here. It is a revolution. Or maybe the revolution has already happened. And it isn't black vs white. It is ideologues vs ordinary people who want to live in a tolerant democracy that has free speech (even if it does mean that sometimes you get offended).

I am sure she wasn't asked the question purely because of her ethnicity. She had an African name on her name tag and was wearing West African traditional costume. I'm pretty sure that I would think her African in those circumstances. The fact that her real name is Marlene Headley, that she was born in London and her parents are from the Caribbean makes one must wonder why she has gone to so much trouble to disguise herself as an African. Cultural appropriation at its best.

Yep. Also, maybe she forgets that this was an event hosting many representatives of different causes and nations. Some of those reps probably have a near perfect English or close enough accent, purely due to education. The question does not constitute racism... Those bongo dreads and African attire do not represent British dress or history, no matter how much the left or culture appropriators pretends we native Brits are somehow less worthy of our own traditions.

She was dressed in ethnic costume, what does she expect. Me! I'm English/Welsh border folk but a recent DNA test shows me as 40% Welsh, 40% English and 20% Scandinavian. Guess some of my distant ancestors come over in the longships, lol. Many years ago I worked for an international communications company. We were a mixed bunch of many ethnicities but we were all work colleagues just doing a job. Didn't have a 'purple people eater' in the group but such is life. Only geriatrics will get that joke. Then came along a request to be a diversity coach amongst my many other duties. This is where the whole thing was taken over by the black members of our community in the greater world, NOT, I hasten to add in my organisation. Only a minor part of diversity was about ethnicity, the major part was how we dealt with people, and recognising the limits according to the individual. Some love banter while others dislike it immensely for example. I must admit I hadn't given it much of a thought to it until I undertook the training and started coaching. What seems to have happened is some black people with a hidden agenda took over the whole thing and it all became about race and, in my view, their culture of failure. Now they want reparations, I despair! The problem seems to me more about culture than ethnicity. Certain groups in society are aspirational while others carry a large chip on their shoulder. Many in the black community seem to have taken this to the extreme, blaming white people for their own failures and lack of work and learning ethic. Why do we rarely here of problems with other culture except, perhaps Pakistani Islam. I think the problem is exacerbated by the English 'hair shirt' guilt mentality. In the world of 'Woke' every problem in the world is the fault of the British. Personally past experience has now actually made me racist. If I go to live in another country I would respect their culture and values, surely that is why you move there. Unfortunately, those who come to Britain seem to want to impose their culture on us.

You are over thinking with extraneous material to the heart of the matter. In brief, a person's good standing should always take a person's of "I am thinking, therefore, I exist (as what I say I am)". A person, with grace and elegance, should respect a visitor's first answer in good faith. Lady Hussey did not, in spite of her vast experience in diplomacy. Moreover, each person has a thin private space, one should not reach out with one's hand onto a stranger's body part (hair). One has grace and self-respect in using one's hand on a stranger/visitor.

Spot on again, Richard. I have a different accent to English folk and I kid you not, I get asked on a regular basis 'Where are you from' I take it as a sign that people find me interesting enough to want to know more. People see and hear exactly how they see the world, racism, ageism, sexism - it's getting hard to say anything without offending someone. Don't misunderstand me, Racism does exist, as does sexism and ageism but I like to think that is not as rife as some people make out. I think the British people are a tolerant lot. My children are bi-racial so I do understand what it is like for people of colour in this country and it's never been an issue with my family. I brought them up to embrace their heritage - it just makes them very interesting people.

Maybe, like you said, the word "heritage" is a better question. I am a white man, living in the States, but was born in Canada and my heritage is half Norwegian and the other half is an equal split with England and Scotland. Sometimes, people can pick up on a slight Canadian accent when I talk long enough. It is always interesting to know where people originally come from and so maybe we need to come up with a different question to make it clear you are asking about that.

Hi Richard. You are so right about how we were (or were becoming) colourblind, but now there has been a big step backwards. I hope you'll continue to share your rational thoughts on this issue. I thought I'd share my view about the "where are you from" thing, since you asked what others thought. I also think it is fine for someone to be curious and ask about someone's heritage. But that isn't the same as saying "where are you from?" (which implies that the person is not from here when actually they are). I remember feeling like crying as a kid when some adult who should know better asked me that, as if it was not bleeding obvious (by my accent etc) that I was from the same place they were from. Now that I'm an adult and have a thicker skin it is still irritating at best. If you want to know why I am brown or what my ancestry is then why not just ask that? What's with "where are you from" as if I've emigrated here and have a home somewhere else. I haven't and I don't. If you asked an American where they are from, the answer would be America, not Denmark, Germany, Africa, etc (their ethnic origin). If you kept saying yes but where are you from and where are you REALLY from, it would just be strange and offensive - as if you were trying to imply that they are not really American but from another country. I am British and Britain is where I am from and all I've ever known. If you want to know my racial background, why not ask that instead? I'd happily tell you - I am 50% English and 50% Zambian - my dad is Zambian. Having said all that, I do not like the way that this incident is being weaponised by those who who want to divide us. That is a dangerous nonsense. I'd rather be offended ocasionally than lose free speech and live in the racially divided world some people seem determined to re-create. Just another point of view!
@_dude..
@_dude.. 2 жыл бұрын
Most Americans do in fact identify and state their ethnic heritage and say they are from English/Welsh/Scottish/Irish/German or wherever, it's pretty common and most often they will reveal their heritage without even being asked. I don't know why anyone would be insulted by this question tbh; if I was in Japan and someone asked me where is was from I'd just tell them my heritage, even if I was born there. No big deal.
@just_another32
@just_another32 2 жыл бұрын
@@_dude.. But the question where are you from means where are you from. So if you are from GB, you say GB. Unless you infer that they are asking you where one or both of your parents are from (or even further back). Anyway, I think understanding why some people (and not others) find the question offensive requires a bit of perspective taking / empathy. If you were born in Japan and all you'd known was Japan and someone at an event asked you where were you from - you might answer honestly with the name of the place you are from (eg. Tokyo).

For example English humour seems to have has gone, replaced by feeling insulted, but at the same time respect also seems scarce. I suppose it doesn't matter but I heard recently that white English people are now a minority in London, Manchester and Birmingham.

When I was growing up in a multi national and cultural environment, i often asked people, yes even white people, especially if they had an accent different than mine, where their people were from, not out of racism or bigotry but simply out of interest and the conversations that ensued were a way of learning about different cultures. I would have to say that the race card is born of insecurity and is a convenient way of playing victim at every turn in an attempt to manipulate every situation. I am a 70 year old white woman who has endured many inappropriate comments or questions (by current standards of wokeness) from blacks in the US, but I just ignore them lest I have to hear how only whites and all whites are racist. And we all know that is BS. The lady was only trying to clarify her question and was baited by the offended party to keep trying to clarify what she meant. I dont believe she meant to offend. Shame on Prince William for his insensitive handling of the situation and publicly vilifying a long time loyal staff member. Let's all stop speaking to anyone but our own kind and of course we'll be called racist and accused of segregation. No middle ground any more.

These days it seems that Cornflakes have been scattered all around and you have to go about your business without making a crunching noise. If someone has a US accent I think it's fair to ask where they are from. It's showing an interest, and I might be familliar with that city in the US. Common ground for conversation. I was once in Alice Springs and there was a construction site with the site foreman shouting instuctions in an accent very familliar to me. I went and asked where he was from and it turned out he used to live about a mile from me in the UK. He had not returned to the UK in 40 years but was clearly delighted to chat about the places we both knew.

Interesting topic. I'm from Texas. Family came over from England for religious freedom once my 14 grandfather got out of jail for not attending the Kings church. Somewhere along the way my ancestors married into two Native American tribes. Caddo and Cherokee on my Mothers side. On my Dads side they married into the Apache tribe three generations ago. One part of my family has literally been here all along, and the other nearly 200+ years. I used to travel for work. All over the USA. 26 different states at 2 or 3 times as many oil refineries. I was asked a lot where I was from? My accent was kind of a hodgepodge. I was even accused of being a yankee by some Oklahoman. That's an insult for a Southerner. I came up with a novel way to deal with the question. When they asked I would tell them "Right back over there. You didn't see me walk up? Are trying to keep up with me? I'm going over there next. Don't follow me. " then I would mutter under my breath but audibly "Stalker"....this always got eveyone who heard it laughing. Broke the ice. Then I'd answer them in detail.

Roles reversed, I don’t think most white people feel comfortable asking someone’s origin. This is an elderly, royal staff member who has contributed throughout her life! This woman Ngozi flouts her heritage, supports BLM (defund the police, pure anarchy!) and runs a black women only charity (I suppose Asians, Hispanics and Whites can find their own group!). Now we’re to think that the invited question constitutes racism. Well, back at you lady! Some might call the above black supremacy! Her detailed account was supposedly caught on a wire too, convenient. Perhaps she should not be flouting a culture and heritage that she doesn’t seem to actually know much about. The royals might want to rethink inviting those with racial preferences to their events - and I do mean ANY preferences.

Then Lord Kitchener decided he could end this war quickly, with scorched-earth policy and be home by Christmas. Burnt down the farms and rounded the women and children up in concentration camps. Big mistake. Then the Boers had nothing to go home to. Nothing to lose but their lives. And fought to the bitter end. I'm sure my grandfather is looking down from heaven laughing at the English king bowing and scraping to people in foreign fancy dress, leopard print and shells.

It's funny how she dressed up in that outfit says she was from here but also changed her name to an African one yet calls this 83 year old racist I think it's the other way round as she was named Marlian si she's not proud to be British so she's the racist

I often ask people where are they from and i do not mean anything by it. Maybe this Lady in waiting was a genuine nice person and inquisitive type. This all sounds like a bit over the top. We should just treat each other with respect and not have to be worried about walking on egg shells. The world has clearly gone mad. As usual Great video Richard. Thank you

They woman is a joke, she's pretending to be some one she isn't, she changed her name to an African one, She is British by birth, yet identified as African yet her parents were or are Caribbean, if you read her bio she is just out to cause trouble her parents names are/were Mildred and Gladstone Headley , However she has now achieved her 5mins of fame to top the whole story off shes called Marlene headley from wilmslow

Well said. I was just about to post a similar comment. I think part of her defensiveness is because she knows she’s fake, as in, not authentically of recent Nigerian heritage.😊

Reminds me of a TV advert in 1970's I think, a beautiful slim girl, (the model, Lorraine Chase) with flowing hair is on a tropical beach, a handsome, clearly wealthy guy sees her, like love at first sight. He sidles up and says to her, in an upper class accent, 'Ah! You are so beautiful, you must have been wafted here from paradise'. She looks surprised and replies, 'Nah, Luton airport!' in a common London accent 😂

I wonder if all this kerfuffle would have occurred if our great Queen had been alive? Perchance someone wanted to settle an unknown score with the Lady in Waiting? As engineered incident? Someone once said, I forget who or whom: - 'Revenge is a dish best served cold'!

Playing the race card for 5 min of fame! If I were to be in a foreign country and someone ask me the same question, I wouldn’t be offended. I suspect the lady who asked what she thought was a simple question, probably didn’t phrase in a way, that the offended the lady felt acceptable. I might ask a similar question without being racist because I find it fascinating to learn about other countries straight from the horses mouth, so to speak! If everyone is scared to speak in case we hurt someone’s feelings, then we will live in silent world. I think it’s ridiculous that everyone is brainwashed into believing that if you misunderstand something someone sad, then it was a race or hate crime! Meanwhile grooming gangs can swan around preying on white girls without fear of getting court, at least not straight away.
