VPNs are best used as a site-to-site thing which makes it easier to selfhost stuff. Ideally from a computer you physically control at home. Tailscale is by far the best option for this. I'm a huge fan of them. The other things no-log VPNs are good for is hiding in the crowd. Advertisers/etc. can use the IP Address as a signal to help identify a person (a strong data point among many), but with so many requests possibly coming from so many different users it becomes mostly noise. VPNs are also likely better configured, faster, and for less money than something you'll setup. Mullvad is my preferred option, but I also liked TorGuard. Finally... lets not ignore that a huge reason to use no-log VPNs is for torrenting to avoid getting DCMAs and the lack of logs prevent them from knowing who to forward the letter to. If you run your own server tied to your name.... obviously they're just gonna forward the letter to the person using the server. Lastly the best privacy system we've seen is Private Relay which makes it so the entry point (one provider) knows nothing about what you're doing except which other provider you want to talk to. Then your request is forwarded to that other provider which has no idea who the first provider is forwarding this for. You can do very similar things with running your own VPN to connect to a VPN service or via Mullvad's multi-hop support. Still Private Relay is extremely user friendly and cheap.

Thank you Grant for making this clear. So many people are confused and spreading false outdated information about his. Question: 1. Why still use OpenVPN? It's not quite straight to the point if you really need it anyway with enforcing HTTPS. 2. And why is DNS over HTTPS causing more problems than it solves? Have a nice day.

I work in software sales in the remote access space. VPN technology especially off the firewall seems to be clunky for end users. It appears that zero trust and an SDP model is the way of the future for accessing content securely.

Proton VPN > * If you just use the internet for general purposes, you don’t need to bother with a VPN. However, for the people who actually “need” one, Proton is imo an easy go to choice (and an obvious one). I think people should focus less on why it’s probably be useless for regular people not to waste their time with VPN’s and focus on why they shouldn’t wasted their time and *money* with Anti-Virus software. The bloatware and uselessness of them isn’t as common knowledge as why you don’t need a VPN. As mentioned, the amount of videos and articles on “Don’t bother with VPNs” is way more abundant.

@collinsinfosec

That's a valid point, something I didn't fully consider. Although I understand why one would use VPNs for torrenting, you will often run into copyright (gray area) of the Internet for the actual content you are downloading. Still a valid point if it's legal content being downloaded.

Would vpns be effective against ddos attacks?
@collinsinfosec
@collinsinfosec 2 жыл бұрын
It depends. If you are masking your IP address with a VPN server, then yes. But there are other types of DDoS attacks beyond Layer 3 (network layer), such as Layer 7 HTTP GET and POST attacks. Generally speaking, for end-users, they will not have to worry about DoS.
