Indie filmmaker is usually used to describe someone who makes character or story driven pieces. ‘Marriage story’ and ‘little women’ are both examples of those. There’s no explosions, no violence, nothing grandiose.

Indie films are non mainstream movies with limited financial backing and often no studio deals. You can make an action thriller or sci-fi indie film (Pulp Fiction, Safety Not Guaranteed, Ex-Machina, Under the Skin, Seven, Momento, I mean the list goes ON). Yes, indies are often categorized as character driven films and that tends to be because filmmakers will focus the limited resources they do have on building their characters and stories rather than introducing complex VFX/ spectacles. Regardless though, slice of life films aren't the only factors that make a film "indie".

Marriage Story is supposedly based on the end of his marriage to Jennifer Jason Leigh. It's a sanitized version, though, because he left Leigh for Gerwig while Leigh was pregnant. Leigh is 7 years older than he is, while Greta is 14 years younger. So left his pregnant wife for a woman 21 years younger, and then made a movie about it that IMO makes her look like a shrew. A movie for which he is receiving tons of accolades for its "authenticity." I'm sure the whole sordid mess is/was very painful for Leigh
