All things considered (historical, political, and economic) at the ripe age of 73 I have come to the startling realization that humans have proven themselves to be little more that a pernicious invasive species. Throughout every historical opportunity to improve human cohesion and cooperation we have chosen the opposite course. We can talk eloquently and effusively about the "right thing to do", and endlessly quote bible passages referring to the much-vaunted "christian ethic" and then prosecute endless wars and create a socio-economic world that is anything BUT "christian". Oddly, the vast chasm between what we SAY and then what WE actually do should be a red warning flag to all of us. Just as a mindless and voracious horde of locusts descend on a ripe corn field, humans have greedily and mindlessly overwhelmed the entire Earth, like a pernicious invasive species.

If I may, my question to Prof. Chomsky. In the first two decades of the 21st century, we already have experienced that Idealism is gradually occupied by Populism and the same is applicable to Liberalism by Authoritarianism, Secularism by Majoritarianism and Patriotism by Nationalism. What would be the shape or idea of the 'Democracy' at the end of this century or in which direction it is evolving? Considering the fact that 'We', the people, are the most decisive component to shaping 'Democracy'.

Thank you for your insightful questions... the first question offers clarity in structure. I have been following Noam for 30 years. I love being reminded why he is beyond wonderful. With my Appalachian raising in small mountain North Carolina town, I appreciate and love this man for his being, thoughts and voice. I think though, that human beings, being indifferent and exploitive to the suffering of animals, all of nature and other humans, we are doomed to eventually blow ourselves off the face of the earth. COVID, along with weather, wildfires, tsunamis, earthquakes, other virus (not seen yet)... the red flags all are there. Take a closer look at the wet meat markets in all of SE Asia, where wildlife, dogs, cats, skinned and/or cooked alive. I'm afraid the reckoning will be coming. Our species is just not blood thirsty, it is sadistic and diabolical. Putin and the Kremlin should be wearing costumes and burn crosses in front of St. Basil's Cathedral. Maybe Biden would be able to see clearly where Putin is coming from since now he believes we should turn back the Russian rhetoric.

The startling and baffling reality is that we, as a species, have long recognized, extolled, and proliferated our awareness of the "right thing to do" - and then we don't do them! All too often we do the diametric opposite of our finer sensibilities. The continued use of planet-destroying fossil fuels is a paramount example. There are many others. Our planetary unwillingness to do the things that are necessary, is an exact parallel to a heroin addict who is unwilling and unable to give up his lethal habit even though he realizes that it is a death sentence.

i don't really understand but then again i am not an expert but why would Noam criticize the Hungarian president he was elected he won it is democracy and that's what the people want ?? So not sure Noam knows everything I guess he is just human and makes mistakes as well ..
@sismique2 жыл бұрын
Because that president meanwhile has basically become a soft dictator, changing the constitution and damaging democracy. Putin was elected fairly, and now he is "president" for life. Chomsky is of course not 100% right, and it shouldn't disappoint you, but on this topic, he is not nuts.

Democracy does not automatically lead to the election of democratic leaders. One of the defining characteristics of democracy is that every political ideology can potentially get the majority of votes. So it's just normal that in some countries people elect authoritarians / populists. Churchill once said: "Democracy is the worst form of government - except for all the others that have been tried." This sums it up quite nicely.
@davejohnson69132 жыл бұрын

@@davejohnson6913 I think national identitarianism always leads to bad things in the long run. Preserving local cultures is important, but sacrificing freedom of speech and the protection of minorities for it? Not worth it imho. Besides, there has always been contact between different cultures. Isolationism is absurd. I'm German, so I can tell you that my country has had its fair share of experience with nationalist agendas. Let's just say that it didn't go too well.

Mostly d'accord, but NOT on Israel, not at all, and I'm not Jewish! Israel is an obvious oasis of civilization in the Mideast, so blessedly different from the surrounding countries. The Palestinian/Islamic permanent obsession with violence will keep them poor and underdeveloped forever. One feels sorry for the individual Palestinians oppressed by their manipulative leaders.
You cannot be serious. It's hardly civilised to murder journalists or to purpose-build a ship in order to steal gas from Lebanon. Israel is despicable.

@sismique2 жыл бұрын
Lol. What's your criteria to judge evil and good? I am curious. Remind me, how many millions died in the name of god or Jesus? How much suffering had so many to endure from people convinced they were doing "good" according to their god? Is it that simple, really? Think harder and don't be so quick to judge (I think that's somewhere in the Bible, isn't it?)
