@@markfisher6404 You aren't hearing what he is actually saying: he is asserting that which he believes Ukraine should do -- and is repeating the demands of IMPERIALIST PUTIN. At the very same time that RUSSIA ILLEGALLY invaded Ukraine AND IS AT THE VERY MOMENT ENGAGED IN MASS SLAUGHTER OF CIVILIANS. And get a clue by learning HISTORY. NATO has three basic purposes: 1. To put an end to the hundreds of years of war between and among European nations. In that it has been totally successful. 2. As a defense of Western Europe against IMPERIALIST RUSSIA. 3. As the first line of defense of the UNITED STATES against IMPERIALIST RUSSIA -- "better THEY fight them THERE than WE fight them HERE". There is a young French woman who made a video tour of the D-Day cemetery in France and posted those videos online. The cemetery is laid out by country, and the United States section goes on and on and on and on and on; most of those graves are filled with young men, boys, who didn't live to see their 20th year. That is the PRICE the United States paid in stopping IMPERIALIST HITLER IN BEHALF OF WESTERN EUROPE AND the United States. I have opposed EVERY US war since Vietnam. I was the ONLY member of my high school class to speak out against that involvement and took the heat for doing so -- "draft-dodger"; "Communist" -- and refused to be silenced. I opposed the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. Saddam Hussein did not have and did not threaten to use chemical or biological weapons, or nukes. But Putin DOES have nukes, AND is threatening to use them. His nukes can reach the United States. Reality and human affairs are not perfect. The Left FALSELY bashes Obama for NOT putting "boots on the ground" in Libya -- which the majority of the US population AGREED WITH: democracy is MAJORITY rule. Instead he told Europe that Libya was in EUROPE'S front yard, not the US's. And the Left actually attacked Obama and Clinton for what happened to Gheddafi. LEARN THE HISTORY: Gheddafi was a dictator and mass murderer -- and a consequence of EUROPEAN -- not US -- imperialism and colonialism in Africa. Let's be HONEST: If a DEMOCRATIC president engages in imperialism, the Left bashes him. If a Democratic president DOESN'T engage in imperialism -- and I'm speaking also to Chomsky's IMPERIALIST selling out of Ukraine -- the Left bashes him. And if a Democratic president acts CO-EQUALLY with the US's allies, in this instance against IMPERIALIST RUSSIA, the Left bashes him. @@markfisher6404 That's utterly dumb -- ignorant of HISTORY. The ANTI-imperialist says that Ukraine has its own independent right to choose its destiny, its own future. The REPUTATIONAL "anti-imperialist" Chomsky asserts that Ukraine should appease IMPERIALIST Russia by acceding to IMPERIALIST Putin's demands -- which demands are REFUTED by IMPERIALIST Putin's illegal invasion and imposition of his OBVIOUS GENOCIDE on INDEPENDENT Ukraine.

When has Ukraine tried negotiating? Ukraine was talking about retaking Crimea through force before Russia invaded. If zelenskiyy accepted a deal that didn’t include the return of Crimea which as Noam correctly points out is a non starter, the now well armed Ukrainian far right will kill him and take over the country. The US sees its strategic interest in fighting Russia until the last Ukrainian. It weakens Russia to bog them down in Ukraine. Europe will look for energy elsewhere, possibly to more US imports. And US arm manufacturers are getting even richer flooding Ukraine with weapons. What true US interest is there in a ceasefire?

Noam has the mind of an eminently reasonable and rational man; I think he stumbles a bit when delving into abnormal psychologies; he considers them from within himself. I think this is a common problem with leaders on the left; they've never been messed with much by people of this type on a personal level, because of their status and power; so they don't have a real, intense, familiar understanding of that kind of crazy. They're a bit distant about the level of abuse these people are capable of.

Prof Chomsky has had a glittering career as an arm chair critic of US foreign policy. His memory is impeccable, but that only pertains to the authenticity of what he has read. In his analysis of foreign countries however has always been through a chauvinistic lens of western superiority. He is ultimately ineffectual in dealing with the thick layers of lies spouted by the west in the geopolitical arena and falls victim to these lies, despite maintaining his criticisms of the US. He really needs to retire.

No, it wasn't. I'll be honest, generally Chomsky is a delight to listen to, but here he comes across as uninformed to the point of delusion. Is this better than the mainstream? Maybe marginally. But in *no way* does this interview address the "real questions & ideas" needed to understand this war. If you want something that gives you actual context, and doesn't try to pretend that a Russia-Ukraine war is all about the US, a good start would be Chris Hayes interview of Timothy Snyder in "Why is this happening". To really understand what Russia wants you need to understand the History of the region. And when you do, you'll understand that much of what Chomsky is suggesting is unfeasible: "settlements" can only occur after Putin feels like he's lost. That's the reality of the situation.

But just because Russia won't be destroyed, doesn't mean we cannot push them to have worse negotiation position so end result of negotiation is more favourable for Ukraine and Western world. So this point doesn't undermine sending military aid and helping Ukraine fight as much as possible.
