The issue with negotiation is that it presumes both sides are on equal footing to negotiate and that both sides have legitimacy. If I said "We should end the Iraq war by negotiating", Chomsky would rightly laugh at me and say "we don't need to negotiate, we just have to leave." The Iraq war was OUR doing, and it was OUR responsibility to leave. Not negotiate, just leave. Same with Russia. They don't need to negotiate. They just need to pull their troops out, that simple.

@jaredgreathouse3672
@jaredgreathouse3672 Жыл бұрын
@M JAR you're right Iraq wasn't a threat, but the only reason NATO is popular is because Russia is an aggressive force in the region. If not, NATO wouldn't be popular. The fact that Russia is so aggressive creates the problem it claims to want to solve.
@michaeljarawley
@michaeljarawley Жыл бұрын
@@jaredgreathouse3672 I'm listening to two points of view and seeing russias point about nato expanding East to russias border and they seen that as a security risk. Should nato and the heads of ukraine respected that by saying that ukraine will not join Nato? I just like to see it from the other side The US nearly going to war with Russia because of the cubin missile crisis again because of security concerns. Should there not be a buffer zone between Nato and Russia to rid of any paranoia.
@jaredgreathouse3672
@jaredgreathouse3672 Жыл бұрын
@M JAR NATO expanded east because of Russia. Russia is an aggressive force in its region of dominance, so its natural that NATO is popular to protect themselves from Russia. So again, the Russians create the problem they say they want to solve. Either way though, Russia is the one who invaded Ukraine. So talking terms with them doesn't make any sense. The moment you attack aggressively (while giving Blood and Soil speeches), the moment you invade a country and attack the capital, negotiations become pointless.
@jaredgreathouse3672
@jaredgreathouse3672 Жыл бұрын
@M JAR Nobody, even NATO, is going to literally invade Russia. So, as with the Iraq analogy, we didn't need to negotiate. We just had to leave. No negotiation. No assurances. Just leave. Same with WW2. When Hitler attacked Poland, the Poles should've (and did) fight back. They didn't need to negotiate. No need to make a treaty. No need to talk terms. The Nazis just had to leave. And they didn't leave, and millions died because of it. When you are the aggressor, you lose the right to ask for negotiation. If someone breaks into my house, the only negotiating they'll be doing is with my combat knives. If they don't want that, they need to leave.

I like how you disregard the circumstances. Russia is the strongest nuclear force in the world and their crazy president is dying. Worst case scenario, NATO joins, defeats Russia only watch the world obliterated in front of our eyes by nuclear weapons. Another worst case is that Ukraine does it alone which is not probably and Putin’s ditch efforts are nuclear weapons. Best case scenario, the previous two without the bombs but the scenario that is most likely with least fatalities is that Ukraine loses the war on their own ground and Russia happily walks away. The problem with Ukraine winning the war is that in any circumstance of that, the nuclear bombs could be dropped.

Russia attempted to negotiate for 8 years. Ukraine admitted that Minsk was negotiated in bad faith, but nevertheless Russia didn't act. Several times before the war, Russia pressed Ukraine and the US to negotiate, including in December of 2021. The US ignored it, and it led to the invasion. Nevertheless, negotiation continued to be attempted, and in early March, negotiations were scuttled by the US, according to former Israeli PM Neftali Bennett. Negotiations continued to be attempted in late March/ early April in Istanbul, Turkey, and a tentative deal was reached between the two nations. However, this time British PM Boris Johnson intervened to crush the chance at peace, demanding that Zelensky attempt peace, and stating on behalf of the collective west that even if Zelensky was ready for peace, the west was not. People demanding no negotiations are, in fact, demanding the continued destruction of Ukraine on behalf of the US and western empire, when the alternative are reasonable demands. War hysteria has poisoned the discourse and poisoned peoples minds. Putin is not hitler, that's said about whoever the enemy is every single war. You'd think people would learn their lesson.

It is a DEFENSIVE organisation, the only threat it poses is to those totalitarian regimes who seek to undermine sovereignty, self determination and the right of a people to have democratic freedom. It is Russia that is the threat, not NATO, if Putin's Russia did not exist, NATO would dissolve. If NATO did not exist would Putin's Invading army dissolve ? So now you have the answer to who is the threat. You assume that you can negotiate with Putin. We negotiated with Putin in the Minsk agreement and see how that went. I choose to disagree as all this logic is based on false presumptions. Most modern wars do not end by negotiations or destruction. In fact only one in six does. Most wars end in a prolonged destabilization of the region. Secondly, I disagree, because destruction is ill defined. A government can be overthrown or replaced or a territory conquered. The liberties of people and their right to exist as a people can be destroyed. Although I agree Russian territory will not be conquered, the Russian government could destabilize and its capacity to rule Russia could be severely diminished. Even tot the point it loses grip on ints satellite states and provinces. Russia could fall apart. This would not be caused by Ukraine, but by Russia overstretching itself. We should not forget Russia’s (small-mid sized) economy, open geography and deteriorating demographics make it very vulnerable. I think it is this lack of internal power that forces Putin to seek its strength abroad. Thirdly I agree the best case would be if Ukraine and Russia reach a settlement. But this should be a settlement that gives both Ukraine and Russia guarantees. Russia should acknowledge Ukraine right to exist as an independent country and freely choose it course, without Russian intervention. The West should make concrete agreements with Russia and Belarus safeguarding the mutual security concerns and about (renewed) cooperation.

The terrible thing is Ukraine used to be a nuclear power, they gave up nukes in exchange for territorial guarantees. It should be noted, a lot of the USSR nukes were made in Ukraine by Ukraine. It’s also worth note that the reactors producing the fissionable material have been un the possession of Ukraine for 30 years. It’s further worth noting that it’s become relatively cheap and easy to make nukes. Taking all that, how hard would it be to build a small nuke, shield it from radiation detection, put it in a truck and drive it to Moscow and put another one in a ship and sail it to St Petersburg? Or, for that matter, to London or New York?

The only country not afraid of the Russian Federation is Ukraine. Trying to find blame in Ukraine is a futile argument. Had Ukraine not given up her nukes and had been accepted into NATO and the EU in 2014 none of this Russian debauchery would have been an issue or would have occured. The obvious answer is to accept Ukraine into NATO and the EU immediately. Don't gine me any talks of waiting for Ukraine to meet certain standards when jokes like Hungary and Slovakia are members.
