The Information Technology industry has been of HUGE economic benefit to the country. It has employed millions of people directly and indirectly benefited even more. It also generates a lot of monies for the Government, who fail to utilise it properly. Rural India has several problems, but it has absolutely nothing to do with Information Technology. Inefficient and corrupt bureaucracy, overburdened court system and crony capitalism have more to do with the plight of the poor. Castism is also the big elephant in the room no one wants to talk about

IT sector employs merely 1% of the working population. Read analysis of policies relating technologies and argo business and agriculture, you will see how they relate. P. Sainath's work on it could be a start.

Sure, will appreciate a link. 1% of IT is direct employment. There is a major down stream effect of indirect employment, which involves cabs, construction of homes and support services which has created millions of jobs for the poor. The IT cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune are flush of cash for that very reason. The politicians have not used the money wisely, but to blame Information Technology for diverting funds meant for farmers is a bit far-fetched.

GS400 Look up his book and articles. They are available online. EPW has covered the topic in late 90s and ealry 2000s quite well read those scholarly articles as well, if you like. The so called jobs you are talking about are precarious jobs and gig jobs that have severe social and health impacts on workers, not to.mention the injustice of it. even IMF and USIBC acknowledges that. I am not here to debate. Thank you. have a good day. :)

He may know about other subjects of his academia but he certainly not know about India or "uttar pradesh". Farmer suicide is an issue which now exist due to corruption and not due to government polices. Many government policy (farmer loan policy, fertilizer subsidy policy, etc.) benefits do not reach the poor due to corruption. How i know this? because i am from "Uttar Pradesh"(also a farmer's son) or, as he calls it place where condition of women is worse then Taliban. BTW my sister Holds a master degree in management(maybe all Taliban girls have PhD's so we can't compete with them ).

Corruption is itself a part of government's policies. Secondly, women's condition are worse. I live in uttar pradesh and I know it. Remember, last year, dalit girl was raped and burnt.

This is dangerous since there are truths in what he is saying but he is lying about why there are farmer suicides in India. The agrarian laws after independence allowed tillers to be owners which was a socialist policy. There was no intermediate succession where they enabled the small scale tillers and peasants to become independent growers. They would still rely on the government and have no access to water supply or able to sell their crop without a middleman. Most farmer suicides are because there is not enough water supply and therefore no crop. The government fails in providing water supply because there are no major dam projects or small scale water holding projects. The farmers then take loans from the middlemen which they cannot repay. The software sector in India boomed because of very few government policies regarding them. So it was a free open market not in government control. Those who were talented played in the economy which by 1995 had opened up or they went to USA and they brought in investments in India. Case in point is Infosys..the CEO was very talented and he had investment support from USA companies through his brother in law Gururaj Deshpande. Socialism failed India when it comes to business models and agrarian models miserably. Similarly the safety issues in UP have nothing to do with the nature of Indian society but squabbles between socialist-yes socialist-parties like SP and BHP over who gets to own which block of coal or zinc mines. These can turn into street fights with no go zones and favella kind of situations where innocents are killed. The police in these areas are not armed and cannot bring in public safety since the other side is generally heavily armed.
